Internet Explorer's Successor, Project Spartan, Revealed

Microsoft demonstrates key new features of next-generation browser.

Microsoft has demonstrated its new web browser, codenamed Project Spartan, for the first time during its Windows 10 press conference.

Early details on the new browser show that users can annotate web pages (marking things out with a stylus, mouse, or their fingers, depending on the device they use). Users can also cut snippets of web pages to share. Meanwhile, the browser also supports a new reading mode that appears to strip out display advertisements.

Project Spartan will ship with Windows 10 later this year, Microsoft said.

Microsoft also announced during the press conference that all Windows customers, from Windows 7 upward, can migrate to Windows 10 for free for the first year. The update also applies to Windows Phones.

Along with this, Microsoft announced that it's voice-activated personal assistant, Cortana, will also be available on PC for the first time.

Has to have extension support on the level of Firefox and Chrome before even considering using it. Otherwise, I'll open it once to download another browser and never use it again just like with IE.

I'm using IE11 right now. Never had a need to switch to Chrome or Firefox. Don't need Spartan either...

It's just a browser, eh?

<< LINK REMOVED >> It will replace that Metro/Modern browser of yours. Will provide new rendering that better than what IE11 could offer. Also it supports Chrome extensions I think!

Microsoft products will be always fail for me. Only thing they did good is "Directx". Windows is most problematic among all apps in entire universe, i lost the count how many data lost cuz of it, its .net framework is another topic which is a big mess and unfinished product like windows. I bought 2 xbox360 because they were being broken down spontaneously etc. This company failed almost everything except "Directx".

And what does Sparti, the modern city on the site of ancient Sparta, have to say about this?

Naming a type of soldier in a video game after ancient peoples known for their skill in battle is one thing... but now the word Spartan, which deserves to preserve its legacy, is going to be copyrighted and diluted by another sh|tty product from a giant corporation?

Until they started taking money from advertisers to allow their ads to go through. I use Ad Block Plus on IE and it works well.

Sharing a link to a 6000 word article instead of to just to the relevant part isn't exactly efficient.

Free Upgrade in the first year. If Windows 10 fails you after that point, you'll need to pay the MSRP of $250USD. I'll give "Spartan" (hate that name) credit, by its specs, it's finally stepped into the 21st century. I wonder if MS canned its IE engineers and hired some people in the know.

So far I'm very unimpressed with the announcements. Everything is as what people expected; this was going to be about XBOX users and their functionality on a Windows-based PC. Nothing to do with PC gaming. The OS offers something akin to Shadowplay? I cannot fathom software being better at that task and not putting a huge performance hit on the game than to just have the hardware do it's job with an onboard encoder.

Call me a Debbie Downer but all of these new features do not seem like they benefit the traditional desktop user. I will be sticking with Chrome. I am severely disappointed with everything I'm hearing today

And we are supposed to care? Use what you want. This sounds like a step up for MS, which is great since IE has passed Chrome in browser speed tests lately.
