Ratchet & Clank and Resistance developer Insomniac Games is through creating single-player-only games. Speaking to GameSpot from the company's Burbank, California, office, CEO Ted Price said the industry has evolved to a point where multiplayer-only and social games are the new norm.

"I can't imagine that any game we'd do from here on out will be single-player-only," Price said. "The [game industry] has changed. As gamers, we have always been social, but thanks to the way technology has evolved, it's much easier for us to play together. And it's much easier for developers to create experiences where you can play together. So we want to encourage that with all of our games because ultimately, in my opinion, it's often more fun to play with a friend."

Price made it clear that Insomniac is not doing away with single-player in its games altogether, pointing to the company's new game Fuse being an example of its commitment to that area of development.

"We understand that a large portion of players are interested in that single-player experience. A lot of us gamers are interested in both," he said. "I love single-player games but I also love multiplayer games, and I think that Fuse offers you the opportunity to do both without having to skimp on either side."

Insomniac launched a Facebook and mobile division called Insomniac Click last year, and released the Facebook game Outernauts in July through a partnership with Electronic Arts. The company's newest console game is Fuse, a four-player cooperative shooter due out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is Insomniac's first multiplatform game and was announced during the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo as Overstrike.
