Injustice 2 Has Loot Drops and Gear That Changes Stats

Injustice 2 players will receive loot drops at the end of fights that can change characters' stats to make them stronger.

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon appeared on GameSpot's live E3 stage show and talked about his next game, Injustice 2. When asked about the game's gear system, he revealed that the DC fighting game will feature loot drops and gear that can make characters stronger.

"When you finish a fight, we're going to have these drops where basically the victory screen awards you with this gear, and you're going to have the choice of equipping your character with that gear or not," Boon explained. "There's a moulding so to speak, as you keep getting gear you keep deciding if you want to use it and if you want to focus on offense or defense or enhance certain moves or unlock certain moves."

Boon also mentioned that players will be able to save gear they don't equip right away and use it for missions that might call for more defense or offense. He added that the gear system also makes for a more personalized experience.

"It really results in visually and gameplay-wise, it's your Grodd, it's your Superman, your Batman, your Aquaman, and that's really the foundation on what we're building our main gameplay on," he said.

The gear does make changes to the fighting gameplay, but Boon said there would be a "more level-playing-field version" for things like tournaments.

"You're going to have a significantly more powerful version of Superman after you've been gearing him up and levelling him up, so we will obviously have something to level things out for tournaments and whatnot because you don't want someone coming in with a level 50 Superman against a level one Batman," he explained.

Injustice 2's gameplay was revealed at the Mortal Kombat X Finals tournament. You can watch it for yourself here.

Characters in Injustice 2's roster were possibly teased with a t-shirt that showed items owned by Harley Quinn, Captain Cold, and Doctor Fate.

So they're saying it will be 'your batman, 'your grodd', 'your superman' etc. When in actual fact it will be one of 5 characters with the same armour that is OP sitting at the top of the leaderboards.
I hope that the armour/loot system is reward and play based, but I smell the sent of micro-transactions.

This news pretty much ensures that I will not be buying Injustice 2, as this loot system almost guarantees both grinding and microtransaction abuse. I'll stick with Injustice 1 Ultimate Edition, a game with neither of these things.

"you don't want someone coming in with a level 50 Superman against a level one Batman,"

But that's the reality of comics, that's basically the difference between them.

After they screwed Pc gamers with MK DLC, I don't care much about their new games anymore. Also: This just screams Micro Transactions. Especially with their story of having OPed bosses in Story mode, a "get a Laster Batarang for 2.99" would be extremly annoying

Won't that kill the balance? It is a fighting game after all.

@superklyph: Not for tournaments and prolly also for ranked match, unless it only matches you with similar level guys, or maybe the loot has also some sort of rating so it's also considered into it, well that kind of matchmaking surely will be for nonranked matches, as you still don't want to get one hitted.

@maitkarro: I just seems like it would affect your strategy against characters. I'm having a hard time seeing this having any longevity with this system going on.

I have to say, the 'customised' characters look terrible. There's a reason the characters in the comics aren't plated with all that armour- it makes them look really dull. I really hope you can just leave the whole thing alone if you want to, because Injustice was pretty good and I don't want to have to avoid 2 because all the characters look like they're trying to cosplay as Iron Man.

@majere613: Nobody is forcing you to armor up, and you can't force anybody not to do so, because you don't like it.

@maitkarro: Actually from what Boon is saying, it seems like you might well be 'forced' to use the armour. What we don't know is how dramatically it powers you up- there may well be challenges that are effectively impossible without it. (An extreme example would be something like Lost Swords, where if you don't have equipment with the right element you can't do armour breaks).

Ultimately it's their game, and they can do what they want with it. I'm sure some people will love it, based on some of the horrific creations I've seen in Tekken or Soulcalibur in the past, but for me, customisations for anything other than cosmetic reasons are a big turn-off in a fighter.

Hopefully you cant buy start altering gear via micro transactions. Also I am interested to know how this will work in online, a lvl 50 sups vs a lvl 1 batman sounds like its completely unfair and the batman would have to be SonicFox to win. Hoprfully you can que as ungeared vs ungeared.

oh boy, why do i have a feeling there will be a meta where everyone is either focused on attack stats or focused on defense stats, and a balanced approach won't work...

So it directly impacts gameplay and will be abused by microtransactions, great!
