Infinity Ward renews contract, teases 'unique new IP'

Call of Duty 4 cadre reveals "renegotiated deal" with Activision, says super-secret project is in the works.

This time last year, the thought of a wholly owned developer splitting off from its parent company was unthinkable. Then, Bungie Studios stunned the industry by doing just that, amicably parting with owner Microsoft after generating over $1 billion with the Xbox and Xbox 360's flagship Halo franchise.

With the Bungie precedent hanging in the background, it appears another top-tier studio has also sat down at the table with its corporate overlord--and chosen to stay put. Late last week, Infinity Ward director of communications Robert Bowling quietly posted an update on the Iamfourzerotwo.com Web site saying "we have decided to re-up on our contract with Activision publishing" following a "recently renegotiated deal."

Perhaps more excitingly, the community manager also used the post to reveal the new agreement with Activision "has laid the groundwork and kick started our future project, as well as the possibility of a unique new IP by Infinity Ward that we'll have complete control over." (Emphasis added.) Bowling went on to say "We're excited to be working on our next project, but it's going to be quite a while before I can share any details on exactly what that project is."

Indeed, Activision had good reason to hash out a favorable arrangement with Infinity Ward, which won numerous awards for its latest effort, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Besides frequently being the most popular game on Xbox Live, the title was also last year's top cross-platform title, moving over 10 million copies as of last month. According to industry research firm the NPD Group, it is the eighth best-selling video game in US history.

i hope they stick to fps games, mainly for the great online, and hopefully it is a military game as well (be it modern or historical somehow). they do it so well, it would be great to see them take on something new though

Has Infinity Ward finally gotten tired of making the same soulless military shooter? I hope so.

What ever they are making is sure to be amazing! No doubt! Maybe using the COD4 engine? Or maybe making a new more awesome version!

@ luvmesomechicken An IP is an intelectual property. In gaming terms it means a new franchise, rather than a sequel to an already existing game, as call of duty 5 would be for example. This is exciting news, infinity ward is an excellent studio and COD4 proves they know what they're doing even when covering new territory

@luvmesomchicken. An IP is intellectual Property. RenegadeSynapse 's post explains it best. RenegadeSynapse "IP = Intellectual Property IPs are movies, books, games, music or just any creation of the mind in general. Call of Duty is an IP, Halo is an IP. The sequels to each fall under the same original IP since obviously, the sequels/prequels are an extension of the original idea. A new IP refers to a new idea"

It's good to see developers wanting to work on new IPs instead of going with the safe choice and just making sequel after sequel.

New IP is always good news. The corporate pigdogs that call the shots are so caught up in making a buck that it has squeezed alot of the creativity out of game design. PC games used to be unique from one to the next. Now the market consists mainly of derrivative clones and sequels. Same thing in movies. Sad.

Awesome, great to know. Hopefully they will make another modern warfare type game. Not to say cod5 will be bad. Im happy its taking place in the pacific war unlike most games that take place in Europe.

That would be sweet if they did a merger with microsoft like bungie had. then they might be able to have designated servers. that would be awesome. haha.

IMO, and i think many will agree, IW makes the great COD games, and treyarch ruins the series... i think IW should just start their own FPS franchise (where they develop every instalment) and leave COD to Treyarch, the COD series doesn't deserve to have IW developing IMO

So basically they're busy making Call of Duty 6, and when it's done they'll move to a new title. Cool with me.

Of course, Call of Duty games are awesome (well, at least the ones developed by Infinity Ward), but I'm glad to learn they are planning to do a new IP. Great news! :)

I read somewhere - Gamepro or GI, I think - that Activision thought introducing Call of Duty to the MMO arena was a "logical next step" or something. I know IW said it was unique and new, but still...something to digest. Personally I don't think they'll stray too far from FPS, but if IW has control it'll be something awesome, in the same style as either Far Cry of Fallout.

As long as they keep bringing goodies, and Activision treats them well, I don't see why they should part away. I personally don't think that Bungie is better off without a giant publisher like MSFT.

I always like to hear companies starting new IPs. It proves that some developers out there are really trying to be innovative and stand out in the video game industry instead of beating a dead horse franchise to its millionth sequel. More power too them.

I hope, if they are all working as one team, that the new project won't take their time away from the next Modern Warfare game. If it's related to the CoD franchise, or even if it isn't, I'm anxious to hear what it is.

"Didnt like how you had to have a life partner in the game. Really took away from the manliness of it." What the F are you talking about?? Did you play the game? And if you're talking about single player then you're just dumb. The MP was where the game was at.

They should just say Series or Franchise instead of IP. Stop trying to sound so smart or in the know all the dam time. I think it will be McKids:Reborn. Its about time the McKids made a comeback.

IP = Intellectual Property IPs are movies, books, games, music or just any creation of the mind in general. Call of Duty is an IP, Halo is an IP. The sequels to each fall under the same original IP since obviously, the sequels/prequels are an extension of the original idea. A new IP refers to a new idea and in this articles context, it refers to Infinity Ward starting work on an entirely new game unrelated to their previous IPs. Therefore, the new IP can't be another title in the COD series.

Im anxious to see what IW can do outside of CoD, I mean they can only make so many of them. Once you got into Future Warfare or something akin to that, what else is there? Fighting an alien invasion of Earth? Havent seen that before.

If it's a Call of Duty game, it's not a new IP. Therefore it's not a CoD game.

I personally liked the world war 2 call of duty games better (minus the 3rd one which sucked) To be honest i'm one of the few people who disliked Call of Duty 4. Too run and gun for my taste. Halo was really the only game to do that well otherwise I lean towards games like battlefield and Tom Clancy more.

Well, its one game, and there are other companies who have made multiple good games just to pop out a garbage High profile title so im gonna keep my mouth shut on this one until some more information surfaces to make my opinion known.
