Infinite Jump Glitch Makes Sonic Boom Beatable Within an Hour

Obvious game exploit allows Knuckles to restart his jump when pausing the game.

A major bug found just one day after the release of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric allows the game to be completed in less than an hour.

Known as the infinite height exploit, the bug occurs when playing as Knuckles, whose jump action can be manually restarted when pausing the game (a video demonstrating the glitch can be found above). Effectively it means players can continually jump to unrestricted heights if continually pausing the game.

Now players are using the glitch to make major shortcuts through the Wii U game, jumping over sky-high walls to reach inaccessible areas, with the fastest completion so far clocked under an hour. Twitch user Parax0 has published a video of a sub-hour completion on his channel, which you can see below. Parax0 says "this is my third playthrough ever so I didn't practice much and there's loads of mistakes and optimizations possible".

It is not clear how the infinite jump oversight had made its way through both Sega and Nintendo's quality assurance tests.

Publisher Sega did not issue review codes for Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, meaning that critics have yet to assess the game.

Really, Sega? Your QA team couldn't spot a glitch caused only by the jump button and the pause button?

With exploits like this present, who knows what other wonderful glitches lie in wait. Probably the game's only redeeming feature.

Lol, first AC Unity and now this. It's funny that the article for AC Unity states "It is not clear how the bug-ridden build passed through Ubisoft's internal QA department, nor how it managed to be certified by both Sony and Microsoft" and now in this article it says "it is not clear how the infinite jump oversight had made its way through both Sega and Nintendo's quality assurance tests". Seems like Microsoft, Sony, Sega and Nintendo are equally bad sometimes at discovering these things. It makes you wonder if this whole certification process that the console creaters enforce is just an excuse for them to get more money.

Just leave the glitch in the game Nintendo. So people can try for the fastest speed runs. There is always the option of not using the glitch and just play the game normally.

I think the bigger news nugget is how the publisher didn't issue any review copies.

As much as I really want a quality release in the Sonic series (the last good games were Sonic Generations and Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed), I'm kind of glad that this one is bombing. I really didn't agree with the art style and gameplay direction they were going, so hopefully this will mark the retirement of the "boom" franchise.

If they could just release a new game with the same quality as the excellent 2D 'act 1' sections of Generations (even the 3D 'act 2' sections were ok), they would be on a better track.

I'm still eager to see what the various review sites think of his game, but from what I've read/heard, this is going to be one of those bottom of the barrel Sonic games. It's a shame because I really had high hopes for this game. Makes me sad to see Sega fall so far from their final glory days with the Dreamcast :(

I wonder if they know they can just stop pausing the game over and over and play normally. people act like a glitch like this becomes an automatic playstyle when its found.....just stop doing it and its like it isnt even there.

also WHO THE HECK would want to play like this for an hour....like wtf is mentally wrong with people that want to sit there and pause the game over and over for an hour....and WTF is even more wrong with people that WANT To watch this garbage for an hour or more. like do you really not have anything better to do than watch someone else pause a game repeatedly......... what is wrong with people

well to bad for this to came out on the finished product, it's not ok at all, but people here talk like the game is ruined because of that, well it's only ruined if you use it, still don't know how the game goes, this could only be one of many problems

Metacritic's user score for Sonic Boom isn't looking good. That compounded with this makes it look like Sega has yet another winning entry (sarcasm) in the Sonic franchise.

I'm starting to be convinced that Sonic in 3D will never really work the way people want it to... and how could it when its main gimmick is speed and you couple that with platforming and baddies? I never really understood how that formula was supposed to make sense, both in 2D and 3D, but 3D makes it even worse because given the speed people want out of a Sonic game, there's less precision in platforming and handling enemies with a third dimension to consider is practically impossible unless there's a lot of homing involved. The one advantage 3D has is that your vision is no longer blocked by the edge of the screen which I always thought was a gigantic problem for 2D Sonic during the sections where you're going fast and it's impossible to react to anything unless you've memorized it.

Everyone already knew this game was going to be trash before it hit shelves. This was expected. Even Sega doesn't have any confidence in the product's quality; hence why no review copies were sent out.

I am going to guess that the bug is due to some physics glitch, probably due to Knuckles' large model.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's true, but Ocarina of Time's glitch required years of repetitive testing to actually discover and a ton of precision to actually pull off. This game came out two days ago and the glitch is not only extremely easy to reproduce, but it's something that multiple people discovered almost immediately.

Lol what kills me is that Nintendo can even allow such a bad unfinished product to be released when their sales are weak and desperate to win our consumers.

As for Nintendo not allowing this game, it likely passed their quality test which check for bugs that will break your console... Bit of a different quality check, Sega is the one in charge of making/fixing the actual game.
