Double Fine has uploaded the Doom episode of its Devs Play show, in which you can watch id Software co-founder John Romero play and talk about the work that went into the seminal first-person shooter.

Romero was a designer on Doom, and so has intimate knowledge of every aspect of the game. The video is especially illuminating if you have any interest in FPS level design, which is still influenced by Doom. For example, Romero explain the origin of the horseshoe level layout you see early on in the first Doom level, which went on to appear in Doom 2, Heretic, and Quake.

Devs Play is a new video series where game developers play and provide running commentary on a variety of games. The next and last episode, which will debut on January 27, will focus on Double Fine's Psychonauts, and will feature Tim Schafer and other members of the original development team.
