I Didn't Need Another PS4 Controller--Until I Saw These Beauties

Give your DualShock collection a shake-up.

29 Comments

There have been no shortage of colours released for the PS4's DualShock 4, but Sony has seen fit to give us even more. The company announced via the PlayStation Blog that four more colors are coming this fall, and while I thought it couldn't get any better than the translucent models from a couple years back, it seems I forgot all about my favourite colour: PURPLE!

No Caption Provided

The four colours coming are Electric Purple, Titanium Blue, Rose Gold, and Red Camouflage--I'm guessing the latter will come in extra handy if you want to hide amongst all of autumn's red trees. All four controllers will arrive this September in the US and Canada for a list price of $65 USD / $75 CAD. The controllers are also set for a fall release in Europe and other regions as well.

On top of the new controllers, we'll also see the arrival of a new design for the PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset. This new version matches the Rose Gold DualShock 4 and will hit stores after the controllers, sometime this fall. You can expect a list price of $100 USD / $120 CAD.

You can pre-order the new controllers below. In the meantime, check out this deal on the Fortnite Neo Versa PS4 bundles. These bundles finally came out in the US this week and offer exclusive Fortnite content with a PS4, DualShock 4, or Gold Wireless Headset.

Reporting this a bit late they have been out at gamestop a while. The titanium blue one and the red one where on the shelf at my local gamestop over a week ago. Kind of hard to preorder something already out

1- These aren’t “gorgeous”; that’s a word that you use to describe a female and is overused on this website.

2- I’m not wasting anymore money on PS4 accessories until I know if its compatible with PS5 or if it will be getting entirely new controllers.

3- I wonder if we’ll ever actually get a more premium controller.. i.e., something not made of plastic.

4- I might have to cop the purple after verifying #2.

@tingtong:

Honestly if like it I'd go for it ps5 over year away and probably best to wait to second or 3rd shipment to buy a ps5 there fair chance at bugs or manufacturing errors on first launch. I had to send my xbox 360 and ps2 back under warranty with in few weeks of initial release of the system.

@heqteur: Let alone "gorgeous" like stated in the title. It's more like "where is my vomit bag?" kind of colors...

When the most visually interesting is a red camo, you know you f**ed up. If Sony wants to keep churning out controllers, they should consider looking at what some of the third party companies are doing with their garbage quality knockoffs. I mean, why not make some translucent smoke buttons, sticks, triggers and slap some LEDs in the thing? TRON that sh*t up. And how about added some graphic accents to those bland colors? That purple controller, if it was a few shades darker, might look dope as hell with some lightning accents. Or how about some metallic flake flames? There are any number of things they could be doing to make these controller pop, but they're just churning out the same boring crap. Meanwhile, you have goobers with 3D printers making vastly more interesting kits for swapping out and/or reshelling the Dualshock 4. How f***ing lazy are you, Sony?

Also, while it's too late for the PS4, what with this generation coming to a close, I wish they'd sell matching consoles to go with the controllers. Either bundled together or sold separately so you could mix and match, if you so desired. Hell, at the very least they should take some sort of informal internet poll to see if people would be interested in something like that. I, for one, am bored with black boxes.

End of the day, though, I think we can all agree that 'rose gold' is a vile abomination of a color. John Oliver described it best when he said it looks like someone vomited a salmon dinner on dirty ballet slippers.

@thedarklinglord: Two of the colours made me want to hurl but yeah i guess the red and silver look fine. Nothing amazing. I always just want to use my Xbox Elite controller with the PS4 Pro as well . Is there any mod that allows this to work? Just annoying i can use a brilliant controller for PC and Xbox one X but not the Pro.

Aww. Thought they were actually releasing new models, not just stupid color swaps. Still waiting for Sony to wise up and release a controller variant that swaps the D-Pad and the Left Analog so that the vastly more important L-Stick will be in the dominant position of use. D-Pad has been irrelevant outside of fighting games since the PS1 days. There's no excuse for keeping it where it is 20 years later.

At this rate, though, MS is doing such amazing work that we'll probably see Xbox controller compatibility on Playstation platforms in the future alongside all of the games they're allowing to still be published from their 1st party studios.

@DarkReign2022: I dislike offset analogs.

But I also don't see why it needs to be a mandate. Just make both styles of controller.

@CyberEarth: I agree. That's why I suggested doing both. I think Xbox should do the same, as well. Release an alternative controller design that is more comfortable to gamers from foreign platforms. Best case scenario, enabling gamers could allow them to experience a new platform comfortably and they might make a permanent switch. At the very least, it encourages players to play both consoles instead of limiting themselves to one. Either scenario is a win for the company that enables everybody to play comfortably.

My PS4 is full of awesome-looking exclusives like Spiderman, Detroit, and Horizon, but I rarely play anything on it because I'm just not comfortable with the controller. I'd rather be bored on my Xbox than playing something new on PS4 just because the Xbox controller doesn't cramp up my hands. Other people I know are exactly the same in reverse with playing the Xbox.

Please replace “amazing” with “ok”.

”Amazing” is over the top word to describe any coloured controller.

Are these like the PS4 pro controllers?

The blue one is okay, but depends if you will be able to use with the PS5

@totallytc: If I have an aging controller, I might replace anyways and nab one of the new colors. The sole motivation isn't the color though.

A pity they don't concentrate on improving the battery life rather than releasing more colours.

@Dumper1: Turn off the built in speaker. Lower the LED brightness. Disable vibration. Good for 6 hours. Or just get a Gen 3 controller and make it USB plugged for wired power.

@Barighm: Still annoyed that they require the light bar to be always-on as a power indicator, when they could also have kept the tiny indicator light from the DualShock 3, only turning the light bar on when it serves a gameplay purpose

If you have a glossy TV, it tends to reflect the light bar, even on lowest brightness

@Spartan_418: But nobody uses the light bar for much of anything. I don't even notice when the light bar changes colour to indicate stuff in the game. The built in speaker is just extra noise and doesn't really contribute much compared to a good pair of headphones. The touch sensitive pad had potential but nobody uses it for anything except as an extra button.

Such a shame. So much potential in the DS4. All contributing nothing except to drain the battery.

@Barighm: Yeah, at one point they said the light bar was for VR purposes, but PSVR games all seem to use the Move controllers instead
