Humor made Battlefield: Bad Company a "niche" title, says DICE

"When we did the original Bad Company and the sequel, we got a lot of criticism," says DICE executive producer.

The sense of humour in the Battlefield: Bad Company series makes it the game more of a "niche" product than the mainline Battlefield titles, DICE executive producer Patrick Bach has said.

"It is a discussion about niche and mass market, I think," said DICE executive producer Patrick Bach in an interview with OXM. "If you make your product more niche, you'll get more happy fans, but that audience will be smaller--some people won't care, some people will love it."

"When we did the original Bad Company and the sequel, we got a lot of criticism. Why would I play this? It's not a serious shooter, I don't care about this. I want a serious shooter with a more hard-boiled angle. And we thought it was fun! We loved it, we thought it was a great game. The narrative was amazing and the characters were amazing."

"So it's not that we've buried the crew, so to speak," continued Bach. "I love franchises that don't take themselves too seriously."

But to make a game with the broadest appeal then developers need to be "neutral" with humour, Bach argued. "But it is true that for some reason if you want to make a game for the masses, you need to be more neutral when it comes to things like humour, because humour is very personal. Some people love it, some people hate it."

"I think that games in general can be anything," continued Bach. "Sometimes you get the feeling that the community and the press only think there's one type of game, the ultimate game, and for me it's becoming more and more diverse, much like the movie industry, which I think is a good comparison."

"When you started out it was quite serious, because it was an expensive business to make a movie, so you'd [effectively] have this stage drama that you'd film, but then you start to add comedy to it and make money off that, and turn it into a genre, and now you have all types of genres, where it isn't just based on comedy, drama, documentary, or whatever--it's also how you consume those movies," concluded Bach.

"Trust me, the Bad Company [team] isn't forgotten, they are just on a very long vacation," said DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson in October. "They are out there, they're coming back."

As of July 2011, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 had sold over 9 million units to retailers.

Battlefield 4 is out now.

I would love another addition to the bad company series! I enjoyed the campaigns so much more in those games and the multiplayer was pretty solid as well!

Only an idiot would think that BFBC series were not good story-wise or in terms of seriousness. I loved the way how Haggard and Sweet Water had these little gossips after some firefight and i also loved the Sarcasm shown by Redford and i kind of pitied him .... becuz that poor lad's retirement always got cancelled ! Overall it was a really good experience.

Terrible game. Especially on the PC. BF3 was 100x better in so many ways. Control, graphics, gameplay you name it. BF4 however is an utter disaster on so many levels it's not even funny.

@Mengsk Rofl. The vast majority of Battlefield players who have actually played all the Battlefield games definitely do not agree with you. Other than BF4 being a shitfest, which it is.

The only problem in the entirety of BC2 was that you couldn't prone, and the unlock system was crappy.

Battlefield 3 is literally one of the worst games I have ever played, and I've been playing Battlefield since before Battlefield 1942 came out. BF4 might actually take that medal though.

So tasteless is mainstream then? It's an ironic proof that this media has grown big, it also has the bad things about mainstream media now.

I have to gush here. I LOVED the Bad Company series. I can still remember the first time I played the BC2 demo in February 2010. Immediately went out and preordered the game. Veteran status whuuuuut, I rocked so many people with the M1 Garand. It was a one shot kill, no optics, killing machine. The sniping features are what stole me away from COD (bullet drop/ travel time combined with the long distances of the sandbox maps). I also felt like the Vietnam DLC was completely AWESOME, but due to other games being released at that time (I think Black Ops 1?), it went largely unnoticed, which was crying shame. Lol, obviously my opinion is a bit biased due to my love of Battlefield.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I loved the Bad Company series and I have played every BF game since 1942 and if you want to include it BF's predecessor Codename Eagle. I do have to admit that BF4 is starting to be my favorite BF since BFBC2. I am just slightly annoyed that there isn't a BF veteran weapon instead the m1911 is now unlockable by the general community of new BFer's

Ive played every Battlefield game released to date and by far the Bad Company games were the best. I also fell in love with the sniping in the game and spent thousands of hours perfecting my skills. I still play the game when i have time. PC still has a many players on it last time i looked less than a month ago.

On weekend nights you can find several full servers up and I believe my old clan is still going strong.

Vietnam Expansion was the single greatest thing to ever happen to any Battlefield game. I seriously doubt any game will ever take the place of Bad Company 2 as the single best Multiplayer Experience ive ever had. I can't account for the console side of things since i probably only played it once when it was released but on PC it's still active and will continue to do so till Bad Company 3 comes out.... hopefully they don't mess it up. Just Currently wish more people played Vietnam since it's hard now to get a full match going.

What planet is he on? The single player campaigns for BF3 and BF4 were massively criticised. I haven't played 4 but 3's campaign was a joyless hacked together mess lifted out of COD games. The Bad Company campaigns were actually fun. 9m units sold is a niche title?

I don't get why DICE didn't merge BC into the main BF line, make the game they were going to make for multilayer but with BC for the single player component. They entirely marketed BF4 on the multilayer any way.

Bad Company 2 sold 11 million copies... that is NOT a niche market game!

to be honest Battlefield 3 did eventually went on the sell 15, but i bet it wouldn't have happened without the jump from BC2.

Look at that, a community of dedicated gamers rages on a gaming website that the product "wasn't niche, it was quality". Look at yourself - you ARE the niche. The dude is talking about mass market, not people who are gaming enthusiasts and have BFBC in their watchlist.

@Morphine_OD By your definition, EVERY game is niche.

You tool. Leave.

BC2 sold 11 million copies. That's basically the entirety of DICEs target audience. By that logic, BF1942, BF2, BF Vietnam, BF2142, BF1943, BF:BC, BF:BC2, BF3, and BF4 are all niche titles as well. Which all sold well.

No one else is going to buy the game. You're thinking like an executive, i.e stupid, assuming every human with lungs is a customer. They aren't.

As a die-hard battlefield fan that first started with Bad Company 1, get it if you want BC3 because you want the humorous campaign(I loved it too). But I don't get it with those people who say BC2's multiplayer is better than BF4. BC2's maps were more linear and so small and less vehicles so that consoles could accommodate 24 players. You mind find BF3 multiplayer boring because the maps were made for 64 players on PC and it was hard to fit 24 players on to the maps. But now with next-gen consoles, we can now fit 64 players and more vehicles and the maps are now perfect. If BC3 is released, it's not going to have the same gameplay as BC2 and 1, it's going to be just like BF3 and 4. So stop bitching about BF4 multiplayer. Go play BC2 if you want those tiny, linear maps with few vehicles.

Unfortunately they only have to point to sales figures to prove that the mass market wants hammy poorly written attempts at gravitas in their games.

I suspect its actually a complete misunderstanding of the figures and what people are actually responding to is the multiplayer and ignoring the boring campaigns for the most part. A more accurate assessment would be we just don't need a campaign anymore lets put all that money and resources into making more multiplayer content.

Bad company 2 multiplayer is the most fun I've ever had in a shooter, a big reason was because it had character, something completely void in BF3/BF4....the new battlefields seem flat, there's nothing memorable, nothing that's hooked me and makes me want to play non-stop. Bring back Bad company.

In the competitive shooter world, single player campaign goodness is going by the wayside. Not that BF3 or 4 are terrible single player experiences or anything..they are mindless fun. Bad Company 1 & 2 were great in the campaign department. They were challenging enough on hard that you had to make good use of the destructible cover to get by. Plus Marlow and company were pretty entertaining. Oh well, makes more sense for a developer to focus on multiplayer if that is what the target audiance is buying the game for.

That's sad because Bad Compnay was an amazing campaign partly because it was so funny, why do people have to be so boring and want it to be serious like everything else, which just results in dull campaigns anyway...

This is kind of funny considering EVERYONE hates the BF3/4 single player... How can EA/Dice not understand that the singleplayer on BF games is terrible. (The only exception is Bad Company)

<< LINK REMOVED >> They clearly don't understand their own market - there is no niche vs mass market in the Battlefield franchise. Every Battlefield game is played by every Battlefield player, except for those of us who get fed up with the lack of quality and quit.
