How's Xbox Doing? Here Are The Big Takeaways From Latest Report

Microsoft announces how many Xbox Live and Game Pass subscribers it has, and lots more.

Microsoft appears to be in a strong position with the Xbox Series X release coming up this Holiday. As part of the company's latest earnings report for the quarter ended March 31, Microsoft disclosed a number of key statistics about how the Xbox brand is performing.

Microsoft no longer reports Xbox console sales, but the company did provide updates on Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass, and more.

New Xbox Stats

  • Xbox Live - nearly 90 million monthly active users (across all platforms)
  • Xbox Game Pass -- Surpassed 10 million paid subscribers
  • Project xCloud -- Has hundreds of thousands of active users in preview

Xbox Game Pass costs $10/month USD for the base package after a $1 introductory offer. With 10 million paying members, the service is generating $1 billion or more per year for Microsoft.

In total, Microsoft's total gaming revenue for the period fell by 1 percent (down $14 million), but content and services revenue jumped by 2 percent (up $33 million) due to the COVID-19 crisis that is keeping people at home, Microsoft said. Gaming revenue would have been higher but a certain "third-party title" began to taper off, the company said. This is more than likely a reference to Fortnite.

Xbox console sales struggled during the period, with hardware revenue falling by 20 percent. Microsoft said this downturn was attributed mainly to price drops as the company prepares to usher in a new console generation.

Bloomberg reporter Dina Bass also reports that Microsoft CFO told her that the Xbox Series X remains on schedule to launch this holiday despite some interruption in the supply chain due to COVID-19.

Microsoft is a gigantic company, and gaming is just one of its businesses. In total, Microsoft posted revenue of $35 billion (up 15 percent), and a profit of $10.8 billion (up 22 percent).

@Terminator95: why do you hate Xbox so much? Like why? I have an LG tv I don’t hate Samsung TVs. I like PS4 for the exclusives in interface and Xbox for gamepass and the better performance (pro to X). It’s like you’re upset with Xbox, like really upset. Do you do the same with everything? Do you go on forums about how Burger King sells less burgers than McDonald? Just chill out dude, I assume the 95 on your name is a year you were born? Cmon!!!!

@Terminator95: Actually, the last reported figure was about 47 million. I don't remember if that includes X1X or just Xbox One. But in either case almost 50 million units sold is actually really good considering what a terrible first three years the system had.

Taking that into consideration and the fact that there's nothing but good news coming out of Microsoft while Sony is tripping up all over themselves with every bit of news, next gen will see much tighter figures.

@Terminator95: Jesus Christ dude, stay off the cocaine. I don't have as big of a boner for whether one console sells a little bit more or a lot more as you do and I didn't even say anything about Sony selling less units.

But for the sake of facts. The reason Sony sells more units is because it's a bigger gaming brand. The same way McDonald's sells the most burgers but it also has the shittiest ones out of any major fast food chain. That Microsoft managed to sell more units during the 360 era for the majority of that gen is amazing and if Xbox One targeted it's core gamers at the start instead of people who don't actually play games you would have seen much different numbers.

Also, Microsoft had more impact on current gaming than Sony have. Microsoft brought a more western focused style to consoles with a lot of former PC developers switching over and more PC like hardware design. Pushing aside the Japanese focus of previous generations and the weird over designed architecture of previous consoles. That's in part what made PS4 so great at the start of this gen. It was more like the 360 than the Xbox One was.

Also, more boxes sold isn't the whole story. You could sell more boxes but then make less money out of them. Sure PS3 edged out Xbox 360 in the end but 360 was a more profitable console.

@Terminator95: Yeah, you're on here because you're such a busy person. Also, I have the sense to STFU about stuff I don't know what I'm talking about. Get some of that and you'll be better off.

@Terminator95: Nor the knowledge or intelligence. Don't worry, you might get there after middle school, high school, and college. Just stay humble and work on your shortcomings.
