How Untitled Goose Game's Packaging Was Designed To Be Environmentally Friendly

The game's Lovely Edition packaging for PS4 will be goose-friendly.

After giving us one of the most charming games of 2019, House House is doubling down on the appeal of Untitled Goose Game by making sure the physical PS4 "Lovely Edition" releases with 100% environmentally friendly packaging.

Production company iam8bit has just released a thread on their design for the Untitled Goose Game packaging, and how every bit of material used is recycled, recyclable, and still durable enough to live up to Sony's standards.

Despite being made entirely of cardboard, the case is designed to sit nicely on your shelf with your other PS4 games, while being sturdy enough not to get squeezed out of shape by other plastic cases.

The only plastic involved in the packaging is the shrink-wrap, which is a 100% biodegradable plastic film called Biolefin.

Earlier this year, Sega Europe announced that all its games would be packaged in 100% recyclable cardboard, which began with last year's Football Manager 2020. Studio director Miles Jacobson used the release as a challenge to other entertainment companies, saying "imagine how much plastic we could save, how much landfill we could avoid and how much less plastic would make it into the oceans if we were all do this?"

While only the iam8bit exclusive PS4 Lovely Edition is available in the recyclable packaging--the regular PS4 and physical Switch versions are still in plastic cases--iam8bit has said that the release is "an important first step toward eliminating the use of environmentally-harmful materials in game cases." The company has extended an offer to talk about its experience designing planet-friendly packaging with anyone who wants to learn.

The game's soundtrack is also being released in an environmentally friendly way, with a record pressed on reclaimed vinyl--also available on iam8bit.
