How to Listen to Your Music in GTA 5 on PC

Create a custom radio station all for yourself.

Much like with past GTA games, the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V allows you create a custom radio station with your own music. The process is quite simple, though setting it up requires you to know what you're looking for.

After installing GTA V, you should have a Rockstar Games folder located inside the Documents folder of the Windows account that installed it. In there you'll find a folder dedicated to GTA V, and inside that, you'll find an empty folder called User Music. (Likely located at C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V\User Music depending on your setup.) Simply copy and paste your music files--at the very least, MP3s are supported--into that folder, and you're almost ready to go.

When that's done, start up the game and head into the Settings menu. Under Audio, you'll find the options "Perform Quick Scan for Music" and "Perform Full Scan for Music." It's unclear at this point what the difference between the two is, but click on either of them, and a new radio station will be added that's comprised exclusively of the music in your folder. Just above those two settings, you can alter the "Self Radio Mode" option to choose the order in which music is played.

After numerous delays, GTA V is now available on PC with enhanced graphics, new music, and a powerful video editor. Some players are reporting issues with installing or playing it; if you're one of them, check out our rundown on the solutions and workarounds.

Just place shortcuts into the folder, no need to waste valuable disk space duplicating tons of data

@salamihawk: You know some people use SSD's right? I have all my media on a 4TB hard drive which is slow as molasses. Not everyone uses a computer the same way you do, remember that before giving instruction.

just shortcuts to the mp3 files always worked in previous games, not an actual copy of the file itself.

I love running people over as Trevor while blasting GWAR!

In order for it to match the other stations, I've had to compress the hell out of the audio, and then convert it to MP3. I use FLAC almost exclusively.

@DrunkenPunk800: That's nice. Who cares what you do with flac? no one else uses it lol

I love this feature, I mean I could just play it through a separate program, but it's not the same imo.

Why are shortcuts not mentioned in the article? It's much more effective to add the music that way.

@wallacom@Saidrex: Who would want to torrent 65GB? It took long enough getting it legit on Steam.

Yea. I bet a few hundred people who have no social lives and nodded consoles pirated it on console. What's your point?

@Saidrex: As long as it beats DOTA 2 that's all that matters

That game needed to be knocked off the top spot a long time ago

I have the folders but User Music is not turning up.

Avatar image for deactivated-58a78a043e9d4

You don't need to copy the music files into that folder, you only need to make a shortcut to the files, the game can read them just like GTA IV could. No sense making duplicates.

Step one: give all playable characters ISIS neckbeards

Step two: The Music of Islam vol 1 and 2

Step three: explosives

Rather than hope I get 'Roundabout' on the Rock Radio station and end up with Gerry Rafferty instead, I can just have an entire library of Yes, ELP, Mike Oldfield, Asia...aaaaall the good stuff!

@negan2015: GTA actually gets me to listen to music I normally wouldn't because it helps set the tone of the game. I despise country, but I was listening to a lot of it when playing Trevor haha

If you don't want to move\copy your music, you can use symbolic links.
