How To Learn Spells In Baldur's Gate 3

Spells in Baldur's Gate 3 are available to most classes and they offer unique ways of going about a combat encounter. Whether you pick a cantrip that can be used at range or a level 2 spell that blinds an enemy, having a wide array of spells available at your party's disposal is key to succeeding in Baldur's Gate 3. While you might think that you have to wait until you level up to learn more spells, there is one simple and easy way to teach specific characters most of the spells in the game.

Teaching spells to characters in Baldur's Gate 3

In Baldur's Gate 3, the Wizard class has the ability to learn any spell that you can find as a scroll. Unfortunately, it's just the Wizard that has access to this mechanic. If you're interested in learning more spells but you're not a Wizard, you can always choose to multiclass and gain access to the ability that way. Of course, that comes with its own pros and cons, so it's up to you to decide if it's worth it or not. You can also simply select Gale to have in your party, who is a Wizard by default.

As for the mechanic itself, the process of learning new spells is actually quite easy. All you need to do is open up your inventory and select the portrait of your Wizard character from the lefthand side of the screen. With your Wizard selected, you can right-click on any scroll that you have in any of your party's inventory.

One of the options that will pop up in the drop-down menu will be to "Learn Spell." This costs a fee that scales with the character's current strength, but I found it was never more than 100 gold or so. Once the fee has been paid, the spell that scroll held will be permanently taught to your Wizard.

Of course, it won't be immediately usable, as you need to prepare the spell like any other one in Baldur's Gate 3. This is done by going to your spellbook and then looking at the sheet for the Wizard. Here, you can see your list of prepared spells as well as all of the ones the Wizard knows. To make your newly learned spell active, you just need to prepare it, which likely means replacing one of your current spells. As a Wizard, you can replace prepared spells whenever you want, so you can mix and match with different combinations and prepare certain ones for specific situations in Baldur's Gate 3.

For example, if you need to put out a fire and your Wizard knows the spell to bring forth rain, then you can quickly prepare that spell and be able to put out the fire. As a note, you cannot prepare different spells once you enter combat, so all of the preparation needs to be done outside of combat.

So, the next time you see a scroll in a chest or being sold by a vendor, it might be worth it to scoop it up if you have a Wizard in your party. You can teach it to them on the spot for a small fee and ensure your spellbook is ready for any situation Baldur's Gate 3 can throw at you.
