How This Emotional Xbox Video Made Outside of Microsoft Came to Be

The touching video about a kid, his father, and an Xbox spawned from a single YouTube comment.

Director John Wikstrom posted an incredible short about a kid, his father, and an Xbox two weeks ago, and now we know the story behind that video, thanks to an article from AdWeek.

"Player Two" starts with a message that says its story is from a comment posted on YouTube. It's about a kid who finds the Xbox his now-deceased father bought and discovers the racing game, RalliSport Challenge, that he and his dad played together. We don't want to spoil it any further, so you can find out what happens next in the video below.

Wikstrom had been working as a treatment designer for commercial directors and originally intended to make a commercial of his own. However, after seeing the aforementioned YouTube comment, he changed his plans and started work on the short embedded above.

"It was this beautiful comment, [a]nd I remembered thinking it would be great if there was some way to do it," said Wikstrom, who used the comment word-for-word. "The comment itself is so beautifully written, and this is that guy's story. I wanted to be respectful to it."

He got help from cinematographer Idan Menin and actor Zac Pullam, shooting the video in L.A.'s Angelino Heights neighborhood. The video is nearing one million views on YouTube and has over 500,000 plays on Vimeo. The YouTuber who posted the comment has since reached out and thanked Wikstrom. The director says he even heard from "someone high up" at Microsoft, who praised his work. AdWeek contacted Xbox head of game marketing Aaron Greenberg, who said the short "is really inspiring."

"Connecting players through gaming is one of the best rewards of creating video games, and stories like this are always touching and inspire us to do our best work," Greenberg said. "We applaud this fan's courage in sharing his story and the filmmaker's artistry in bringing it to life so vividly."

Xbox head Phil Spencer has also tweeted to share the video, though he did not comment on it.

Unfortunately all the ghosts on my games are mine because my dad is a noob. Still, what a beautiful story.

"spawned from a single YouTube comment" It's nice and quite unique that a youtube comment can lead to something like that.

If they made a game from the average youtube comment it would probably be a quiz game where you're asked questions like Destiny or The Division, CoD or BF, consoles or PC. There is only ONE right answer to each question and if you don't answer correctly, you get a message saying "Wrong answer, you [dozen insults]!!!!". Either that or a text adventure that suddenly turns into a controversial discussion which is completely beside the point of the video.

I actually have that game on my original Xbox. Maybe I should run some laps on that game so my time is recorded. Then pass down my console to my son and let him have that same experience, both while I'm living and after I pass.

Kinda late on the draw on this one, GameSpot. Instead of reporting about this when it happened along with the story about the comment that spawned this video, you decided to report about this only after it got on another news site along with a story about the director landing a gig. I can't say I understand the logic of this.

@elheber: Dude who cares. It's a good story and now people who haven't seen it (like myself) can see it here.

@k9kal85: Yes, but you could have seen it earlier and with better context.

@elheber: The video was just recently released, so how is it late? Yes we heard the story some time back, but not the video. Someone always gotta try to be the cool guy, even on a story as great as this one. People like you are disgusting.

@Zorlac: The video literally says it was posted over 2 weeks ago. More importantly, the article is framing this news around the director as if his story is more engaging than the backstory in the subject of the video itself.

I'm making an extremely exaggerated example here so bear with me, but imagine it like if a holocaust survivor has an interview with a reporter, and the news articles that report this focus on the story of how the reporter landed the interview. This, to a much much smaller extent is my problem with this article.

@elheber: Still feels like you're trying your best to make something bad out of a story that's supposed to be a feel good story.
