The Need for Speed movie from DreamWorks and starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul hit theaters on Friday and while critics might not have adored it, the CGI-free film managed to nearly recoup its entire production budget during its opening weekend.

The numbers are in (via The Hollywood Reporter) and though the Need for Speed movie finished third in North America with $17.8 million, it picked up another $45.6 million internationally for a total of $63.4 million. The movie's production budget was $66 million.

"It's a disappointing start on the domestic side, but to open to that number worldwide and nearly match the budget of the film is great," Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis said. Disney is DreamWorks' distribution partner for the Need for Speed movie. "This was a very affordable movie and with many territories left to open, everyone will be just fine. We feel great about where we are."

In North America, Need for Speed finished third behind 300: Rise of An Empire ($19.1 million) and Mr. Peabody & Sherman $21.2 million. For more on the Need for Speed movie, check out GameSpot's review of the film.
