This week's question is:

How Long Will the Pokemon Go Fad Last?

Ever since its launch, Pokemon Go has skyrocketed in popularity, becoming the subject of conversation for Pokemon fans everywhere. While the app's popularity has yet to wane, we've decided to ask ourselves ahead of time: how long will Pokemon Go's popularity last? Come and discuss it with us!

A Strong Start Shows Promise for the Future | Eddie Makuch, News Editor

Pokemon Go doesn't feel like a fad. Even before Pokemon Go's release, seemingly everyone knew about the Pokemon franchise--even my mom and probably yours. That makes it stand apart from a game like Draw Something, which everyone was talking about for about two weeks. I think Pokemon Go is a wonderful game that is simple yet profound. Walking around my neighborhood in search of Pokemon for the past week is an experience I never thought I'd get to have. The idea of catching Pokemon in the real world is pretty much genius, and while there are no doubt some things that could be improved, the game is off to a very solid start. Developer Niantic Labs will surely address the feedback through future updates; it feels as if the game is only going to get better. We know new features such as trading are on the way and it's exciting to think about what else Niantic might be cooking up to keep players engaged. Pokemon Go is sitting at the top of the charts now and, though it may not be there forever, never bet against Pokemon.

More Life to Breathe | Zorine Te, Editor

No Caption Provided

While I think that the Pokemon Go fever will calm down after a few months, the game is definitely here to stick it out for some time. It's a game for Pokemon fans after all, and dedicated fans want nothing more than to catch them all. This goal could take a while to achieve. If Niantic plays its cards right and smooths out server issues and introduces enough new features at the right time to keep interest high, then the game has a lot more life in it to elevate its status above that of merely a fad. If anything, Pokemon Go's insane popularity is what led to its server stability issues, which have in turn made me less inclined to boot up the game at regular intervals. Once everything's all good to go, however, I'm hopping right back on the PokeTrain.

Fuel the Fire or It’ll Simply Burn Out | Scott Butterworth, Editor

The length of the fad hinges entirely on Niantic’s ability to deliver updates. If it can roll out features like trading and battling in a timely manner, it’ll be able to sustain interest for weeks or even months. Added depth will inevitably and perhaps indefinitely fuel the game’s longevity. If Niantic can’t consistently feed the public's insatiate appetite for all things Pokemon, however, interest will naturally wane, and eventually even the introduction of legendary Pokemon won’t be enough to resuscitate the phenomenon. Regardless, I’m fairly confident we’ve already seen peak frenzy for Pokemon Go; now we just have to wait and see how many people are willing to stick around when all they can really do is catch more Zubats.

Don't Worry--It'll Be Over Soon | Randolph Ramsay, Editor In Chief

Yes, of course this is a fad. There is absolutely no way Pokemon Go can dominate the cultural conversation in the same it has over the last few weeks. The clock is ticking, and pretty soon you won't see Pokemon Go pop up in your news/social network feeds any more. That said, I'm certain Pokemon Go can remain a strong game, and will certainly be one of the most-used mobile games for a long while yet. A lot of people will naturally fall off and stop playing altogether, but for a huge group, it'll still remain a compelling (and hopefully less buggy) experience. Despite its many shortcomings, Pokemon Go has absolutely nailed the compelling collection loop of the mainline Pokemon games, and that alone will make sure this title has a strong and loyal following of players wanting to "catch 'em all.".

If Ingress--Niantic's previous game and the technical basis for Pokemon Go--could sustain an audience numbering in the millions, then imagine what Pokemon Go can do long-term.

I uninstalled it recently. But now when I walk around with my head up... I see everyone with theirs down. We think we are "connected" (which is the biggest over used word of the century), but in fact we are losing sight of everything else and disconnecting with reality and connecting with a phone app world more often. Everyone at some point in their life ask themselves this question: "Has everyone gone crazy? Or am I the crazy one?", and right now I can say with all the "hype" with a lot of confidence that everyone else is.

@virtuoid: Interesting I guess but personally who cares if I'm connected to the world or not TOO much emphasis on"escaping from reality" UM one day we will ALL be gone so what does it matter ...too much emphasis on social interaction (for a guy like me who 1) doesn't like children 2) doesn't EVER want to be married and 3) puts more stock into material possessions/net worth/education/technical things) this isn't really an "issue" I know what you are saying...but maybe just maybe it really doesn't matter when someone says we are connected it doesn't mean by the hip physically it means we have an easier time accessing each other via SOME form of communication (telecommunication, etc) its MUCH easier nowadays to send a message to my cousin James 11 hours away in a different state then it would have been in say...1957...old press-down phones, written letters would take weeks if not longer (if they even reached their designation) and think before the 1940s go back further in history...so while everyone is on facebook, or playing Pokemon Go, or (whatever me personally i don't have a smartphone for all my material possessions and enjoyments within I don't dig certain things) one of them being a smart-phone I have an old blackberry slide with just basic data/text/unlimited minutes - and I rarely use it except for (gasp) an actual text

Beyond that I don't sit on facebook...it's just because I don't enjoy it...a meme [like] here a [share] there out of 118 people on my friends list 75% of them are family/friends I grew up with (and thats the one good thing with tech is THAT very thing keeping in touch, finding long lost individuals, etc, etc) hell we've even seen in society Facebook being utilized in stings/raids/finding a person who has seemingly disappeared...so I guess its true what they say everything is a double-edged sword...theres pros/cons to technology, and advances...overall I think the pros outweigh the cons...I'm not a 13 year old teenage girl...so I don't really have to worry about pedophiles on the net lol...and cyber-bullying only works if you have a conscience and get "invovled" in online social scenes/media...which beyond facebook I don't.....I'm older...been using the internet since the early 90s (both parents worked for the FBI/Department of Defense and are now retired) I went to college for CTSR (Network Analyst) for the state department...so its to say I followed in their footsteps an air conditioned cubicle job basically pays well and great benefits. I am a gamer (and I assume most of the people on this site/comments section are as well) with that said...I don't see the big deal I really don't people make it sound bad that we are loosing touch with everything...first off who is "we" you aren't speaking for the masses cause for every person that has a iphone or uses it on the regular theres a person like me who doesn't...its 50/50 and 2nd off nobody is crazy (thats a child molestor, or someone ACTUALLY in a insane-asylum/padded room warriors as I call them heh...) crazy = isn't what society has become (although I think some would argue that) with all the public shootings, and police brutality you can say people are just hateful but crazy is another thing altogether....no it's more like the "cultural norms" have changed marijuana has been widely accepted and legalized in certain states on local/state levels for medicinal and recreational purposes (and for me thats a big plus) here in Colorado.

I'm a gamer, I don't like children I have an education, a career friends and family and I have my hobbies I live my life I'm satisified and I don't feel ALONE when I am actually ALONE it doesn't bother me...and escaping ...shit why not ? FAR worse ways to "escape" (putting a needle in your arm, being dumb-drunk sloppy falling all over the place) some guy who wants to invest X amount of time into a game per day / multiple times a week so what ? its not doomsday....children are still going to grow up, meet people have friends play soccer, and outdoor sports (I know growing up I had an inground pool, baseball field...basketball net in the driveway ala typical...sister had horses we had vacations to the beach 3 hours away..AND I had video games (and was a voracious reader as well) all of it: film/television/literature/video-games...they are arts & entertainment (throw music in there as well) its what we enjoy...escaping into autobody work (as an automechanic on the side I guess you could say my father DOES THAT as a retiree) he escapes under the hood of a car...I escape in a video game with a controller headset and flat panel LED HDTV....and you escape however it is...being in reality is highly overrated...you do your job, you buy your groceries, pay your bills and function as a normal member of society but on your "down-time" you escape...and that is bad how ? It's not harming anyone....my health, my financial situation, my mental state...(you could joke about it but) in reality all seem to be quite fine. Maybe there are some addicts out there...you always see those snippets in the news of some japanese boy who died after 5 straight days on Warcraft...I don't see how thats even possible...(hunger, sleep deprivation, lol) the human body will let you KNOW when you've gone too far...I play a few hours of gaming a day...I don't use smartphones, and I rarely play online with other people...I keep to myself, and I work and pay my bills and own a small town-home...average if anything nothing special. I feel lucky though cause I have a solid family unit, grew up in a upper-middle class neighborhood and have alot of great memories and close friends of whom I can still rely on...I love my niece and nephew (though I don't want any kids of my own something I am 100% positive on) and our family is close...and living comfortable...consider how much worse you're life would be in a different situation...a 3rd world country war-torn disease-ridden with a lack of proper medical care and education is 2nd tier and not on the menu for everyone or I should rephrase and say its not accessible to everyone. I know its a bit off-topic I apologize but it all ties in...these are the cultural norms nowadays no reason to look too deep into it...people want to escape cause they actually (some of us) ENJOY our hobbies.

Seems nowadays if you escape into anything for a period of time that is looked down upon...in the end I guess it doesn't matter does it ? Cause it won't change so no reason for us to even debate it like we are my sister is a great example...she doesn't game or anything and works for the Department of Justice (DOJ) within the Federal Govt. like the rest of the family she followed in their footsteps she was always an over-achiever with top notch grades / GPA and several degrees (BA/MA) in nursing, and then with CMS (dealing with Social Security) she makes a 6-figure income has 2 children and recently divorced after 16 years of marriage she isn't really into tech per se...she runs a small farm of animals but tech is pervasive the kids have tablets and phones, she has an iphone the boy (my nephew) has a few game systems he spends (when they visit and hes over my place) time gaming and its typical nothing out of the ordinary. Sister however uses facebook all the time (before facebook and smartphones she never used social media or phones that heavily) but nowadays whether shes in a car, in my parents house, with the kids, visiting my place (we all live a few minutes away from each other) and shes glues to her phone it can get annoying when your watching a movie or having a conversation at a restraunt...like hey put the phone down for ...oh I don't know 2 minutes (but she also works on the phone 2 days a week from the home/office) the other 2 days from the actual office. So after reading what you've said I understand it but at the same time maybe what djwood84 says is true maybe you are crazy maybe I am maybe he is...maybe we are all maybe this is just normal...I wrote alot (but I'm a fast typer/fast reader) not worried too much about grammatical correctness though lol...point is so what ? as he says "dont fret"

Seriously don't....people make a big deal out of "fictional" like its a bad thing...some people make a LIVING off fictional...and others enjoy it...its their hobby,...if I spent all my time (outside of work and pills and groceries and waxing furniture, and you know typical responsibilities) escaping thats my business...I wanna smoke a bowl...and play a game for a few hours...a few nights a week (or hell every night if I can) it's not harming anyone else...and I have had MORE then enough social interaction for a lifetime..I don't need to learn those things...if I want to escape into fantasy...well so be it. It's not like we're wargs and its not Game of Thrones as if "you are gone too long, you may never come back" lol thats a bit far-fetched. If you dive into fantasy and escape reality its your choice its not bad or good its just a decision you make...NOW with that said IF your [escapism] affects your life physically and your not accomplishing anything (at all) and you can't move LOL then yes you have issues and maybe need a complete life-change. So yes too much of anything can be a bad thing (ANYTHING) - but thats the point...we can be well-adjusted rational thinking individuals who can escape into fantasy worlds / hobbies / interests / passions and still be functional .... when escaping becomes detrimental to your health or mental well-being then its gone too far...and maybe for some that could happen...but I don't see me going crazy because I spend 5 hours a day playing Witcher 3 or MGS V lol...if I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't do it...and besides were all on this site for the same general reason I assume right ? Sorry for the long run-on paragraph but the point is there...and its obvious for all of us....maybe we're all just crazy and thats just the way it is...if thats the case oh well lol cause my friend when it COMES down to it...science/technology will only advance and become larger...AI will become smarter/more adaptable, tech will become small but more powerful and more people will be 'interconnected' via net/wi-fi (etc) and gaming will get bigger (i mean its already grown leaps n bounds in profits in the last 20 years) smaller faster phones, brighter thinner televisions, all devices connect to each other (phone/refrigerator/t.v./tablet/pc/game console) more apps, more phones, faster processor's, faster better responding VR headsets, more scratch/water-resistant phones, more apps to be streamed on TV's, Ultra HD/4k becoming the norm (and who knows after that) bigger and brighter and MORE...so I'll end it with this: "Just accept it"

@virtuoid: It does say a lot about our society that we finally have something to talk about and it's fictional... I dunno. The world is crazy. You probably are too. I may well be. Meh. Don't fret it man.

Pokemon Go is now more popular than Tindr. What they need now is to make a Tindrmon Go! Gotcha catch 'em all.

They plan on adding more and more poke'mon as time goes by. Every 6 months to a year. and every time they do it will rise in popularity again. Just like with the actual games. No matter what there will ALWAYS be the hardcore fans who NEVER stop playing.

And, they have special and sponsored events coming up, exclusive events where you can catch the legendaries. You just KNOW people are gonna flock to those.

@oversoul53: and I personally will keep this game alive all by myself if I have to. It's done wonders for my depression and social anxiety. Without it, I have no motivation to go out and do shit. I've been getting exercise and i just generally feel better. It's not just some fad, for a lot of people, myself included, it's a life changing experience.

They will continue to be popular and in the news for a long time because they can keep releasing more Pokemon. Every time they add a new feature they will draw everyone outside again.

Not a fad. That's what they said in 1995. lol

I fully do not expect it to go away anytime soon, and I say this as someone who does not play it or have any intentions of playing it. Angry Birds and Candy Crush stuck around for a very very long time, and they were not even close to as popular as this mobile game. I think everyone should get used to seeing Pokemon Go stick around for quite a while.

@P00DGE: well when you say "not even close to as popular" maybe popularity in terms of what your seeing on news reports and overall "hooplah" but lets face it Farmville and Candy Crush are/were MONSTERS in terms of microtransactions and sales online...I mean facebook has more users (in the billions now) then Pokemon Go has users...and a % of all facebook users were using some of these games...personally I don't like them but...thats just me people like my retired mother who doesn't "game" but plays Candy Crush here n there when she logs onto facebook there are MILLIONS like her...I mean at one point and time they said something like 130 million candy crush games played every 48 hours or something like that (in multiple regions in the world) so...I don't know if Pokemon Go was "much" bigger....now I agree its definetly getting alot more PRESS

@Itzsfo0: No, i actually said that bwcause there was a report about how Pokémon Go was literally the most downloaded and played mobile game in history... even more than candy crush, farmville and angry birds. It also has more daily users than twitter. Numbers like that alone will give it staying power

I think it will mostly die down in about 2 months but it will still be a daily thing that will incorporate itself into our lives much like brushing your teeth, facebook, twitter, etc. so if we feel a vibration and we have time to catch a Pokemon then sure we'll do it but I don't think we'll go hunting like we do now. I know for me its not about being the highest level but more about hanging out with the huge community downtown for 6 hours a day and trying to catch'em all. I would love to have one of every Pokemon some day.

If there was more gameplay, I'd be more inclined to play it. So far I've opened it a few times, caught like a weedle and what not, then got bored and uninstalled it. I like the idea of the game it's just not entertaining, at least to me. Then again smartphone addicts might as well play it, since they're already spending their life looking at a screen tweeting their boring opinions and snapchatting dumb photos.

No it will not die out anytime soon. Imagine Pokemon GO VR and endless expansion options..

It's even capturing people who are not much familiar with Pokemon... such as myself. I was a gamer all my life but for some reason or other skipped right over the Pokemon generation back in the 90s. Now I play Pokemon GO with my 7 year old son at the park or downtown and have so much fun. We see people dropping Lures, catching pokemon, challenging Pokemon gyms, and a community having fun together all at the same time.

It's quite fascinating and genius really.

It's staying power will be on how well they support it with stability updates and hopefully the full current roster of pokemon, personally i'm having a blast playing it (I lucked out with where I work being in between 3 poke-stops). Pokemon is super popular, there hitting a 20 year anniversary so that tells you something, this game will be around for quite sometime

And then that idiot (though there's probably more than one) that quit his job to play this thing full time will finally realise what he's done with his life.

But then again maybe he won't, maybe he enjoys his mums basement.

I can only assume people are playing it now for a bit of a laugh. It's orginal, it's fresh... for now.

But I predict that soon, pretty much nobody will be playing it.

I think for a lot of people once the natural progression halts to a stall they will stop.

Pokemon GO is a very well made mobile game. It is well made in that it leads you to believe that it can be completed with zero financial input. Now while this may still be true if you have thousands of hours to spare, there is a brick wall built into the game that many players will not pass.

This brick wall is called 'Level 30' and it is at this point where you need 500,000XP to level up once. This is layman's terms is 5,000 evolution's with Lucky Eggs (cost money), or 10,000 evolution's without. Can anyone fathom actually trying to catch 5,000 of a particular Pokemon let alone 10,000? The sheer amount of Lucky Eggs, Incense and Lure Modules a player would need is colossal just to level up once in a timely manner.

So provided players haven't already fallen off the Pokemon GO wagon before then, it appears to me that Level 30 will be the breaking point. When players start catching nothing but duplicate after duplicate, while seeing that XP bar creep up half a pixel at a time. I think that will be the breaking point.

@Ex1st3nz: Except I don't think Pokémon Go is about leveling up your character so why should that matter then? I doubt most people are playing because they want to level up their character. They are playing to catch and collect pokemon. Then evolve those pokemon. I think a number of people will drop off when they are simply tired of walking around all the time to search and collect, like with anything. However, if they keep patching in more pokemon, new ways to get pokemon (trades?), it will keep the game fun for people. So unless there is some clear and tangible benefit for most players to leveling up their character, as opposed to just finding and collecting pokemon or seeing what the stops get you, I don't think they care much about that.

@ZIMdoom: It's not that the level is important to gameplay, it's that it's a psychological hamster wheel showing progression of some form.

Play a game these days and there is a rather high possibility that it has one or many XP bars. Dying Light has three. Need For Speed (2015) has one but it grants you XP for literally everything which keeps that positive feedback going, you keep playing.

A well designed game these days isn't just one with great gameplay and great story, but one that has a progression system that feeds that positivity loop.

The issue that Pokemon GO may find itself falling into is that for some catching Pokemon may not be enough. Those that like to see that Level Up ding on the screen will start seeing it less and less. That then makes the emphasis solely on the Pokemon and at that point you better hope you're in a well diversified area, cause catching the 4,000th Pidgey is going to start grinding on players patience.

I mean this isn't like Pokemon on 3DS where you sit on your ass all day so the grind doesn't feel as bad, or collecting Pokemon cards where the only loss is financial in the search of Charizard. This is a lot of effort, walking 10km to hatch an egg only to get something you didn't want will take its toll when XP as a side reward is largely removed from the equation.

So yes you are right you don't get much for your level but that XP bar is there for far more than that. It serves a very big psychological purpose, one that keeps players playing on those bad days where the Pokemon you want just aren't appearing. Remove that by making the level up requirement too high and the grind gets that much more tedious.

They have the advantage of knowing that once it starts to fade, they can introduce an entire new region worth of pokemon and do this one at a time. Add in the various features they could add into the game like being able to battle friends outside of gym area's and they can probably keep it going strong, albeit not as strong as launch for a pretty long time.

"A lot of people will naturally fall off and stop playing altogether"...yes they will fall off a cliff and be dead.

@zerohournow: Ouch. Part of me wants to laugh at this and yet part of me realizes this is true and stuff like this has already happened far too much with stupid people.

It lasted a total of 14 days for me.

But it did reignite the Pokemon bug in me, so I dug out my GBA SP and started a new playthrough on FireRed.

At least that feels like a true Pokemon game.
