How Does Wolverine Appear in Deadpool 3 If He's Dead? Hugh Jackman Weighs In

Jackman said they've come up with a way to bring Wolverine back without messing with the Logan timeline.

Hugh Jackman will play Wolverine once again in the next Deadpool movie, in which he teams up with Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. But how exactly this will happen remains to be seen, considering Jackman's Wolverine died at the end of 2017's Logan. Jackman said on the Jess Cagle Show on SiriusXM that Wolverine will appear in Deadpool 3 through a different timeline, one in which he is still alive.

"It's all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines," Jackman said. "Now we can go back because, you know, it's science [flashes airquotes]. So, I don't have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too."

Jackman said he was "100% sure" he was finished playing Wolverine after Logan. However, after he saw Deadpool 2, he felt the itch to come back and try a different spin on the Wolverine character.

Reynolds and Jackman have, for years, played up a fictional feud with some very silly videos, so it'll be fun to see the two together in a movie with Deadpool 3.

That Deadpool 3 won't mess with Logan's timeline isn't news. Reynolds and Jackman released a video in September confirming that Logan, which takes place in 2029, is a "totally separate thing." Wolverine is dead and will remain dead, Reynolds said. "Logan died in Logan; not touching that," Reynolds said. The pair also revealed the plot of Deadpool 3, but what they said was drowned out by by Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." You can watch that video below.

James Mangold, who directed Logan, said on Twitter that he has no issue with Deadpool 3 continuing Wolverine's story despite the character dying. "Oh my gosh! Everybody chill. Logan will always be there. Multiverse or prequel, time warp or worm hole, canon or non-canon or even without a rationale, I cannot wait to see what madness my dear friends cook up!"

Deadpool 3 releases November 2024, with production expected to begin in March 2023. Shawn Levy, who directed episodes of Stranger Things and Free Guy, is directing the film.
