Horizon Zero Dawn's Aloy Is A "PlayStation Icon Of The Future," Sony Says

"There's a lot of potential for this to be an exciting new franchise for us."

Horizon Zero Dawn is a step in a new direction for developer Guerrilla Games. Unlike its Killzone shooter series, Zero Dawn is an open-world RPG. It's still early days--the game isn't even out yet--but Sony sounds optimistic that Zero Dawn could be the company's next big franchise.

"Nothing has been announced to date but I think there's a lot of potential for this to be an exciting new franchise for us," Sony UK product manager Jon Edwards told MCV. "We'll just have to wait and see."

No Caption Provided

Zero Dawn launches on February 28 exclusively for PlayStation 4. The game comes to Europe a day later, on March 1.

The game stars a character named Aloy, who is inspired by the Game of Thrones character Ygritte. PlayStation president of Worldwide Studios said in 2015 that, in the early stages of the game's development, the company wondered if having a female protagonist--which was always Guerrilla's plan--might be "risky." Because Horizon was such a major project, Sony even conducted focus tests to see how people would react.

In the MCV interview, Edwards said the fact that Zero Dawn features a female lead has not been an issue in any way for the game's marketing plans. He added that he anticipates Aloy becoming a "PlayStation icon of the future."

"Guerrilla Games has talked about this in the past and they were very much focused on creating a curious and determined character that was believable in this new world--it just so happened that the character ended up being female," he said. "Aloy is spirited, adventurous, and driven to figure out the challenges that she comes across in this post-apocalyptic world inhabited by machines. You really buy into her as a tribal hunter, and we think that the players will really enjoy playing as her."

Every time I see her I just can't get over the fact that she looks like she would be related to Alfred E. Neuman.

So far everything looks positive in the game especially the gameplay. I love that there is a certain way to defeat each enemy instead of just point and shoot like most other games... And ofcourse the cherry on top is having what is looking to be one of the best looking games when it releases. Can't wait to play it.

@rikku45: No Man's Sky. Upon it's first reveal at several E3s ago, it was described as the game with, "space dinosaurs". Didn't turn that well.

...not if the game doesn't sell well she won't. Plenty of great characters haven't gotten sequels. But seeing as the Sony first party stable has been light up till this point, I see Horizon selling, at worst, average. It won't sell in the top 10 for 2017, no non franchise will but it should be top 25.

@e3man01: This is the equivalent of a Naughty Dog release- People have been hyped on this game for a while, it's from a well known studio, and from all the reviews so far its shaping up to be a great game. Also, what does that mean the First Party Stable as been light? THe PS4 has a healthy ranch of exclusives, especially when you compare the sony first party releases to xbox.

@p1p3dream: Guerilla Games can't sit at the adults table when it comes to development, Naughty Dog craps all over their work. Uncharted 1 is better than anything GG has done. GG is most known Killzone, not even PS3's best FPS series (Resistance). I'm not playing a 4 v One debate on exclusives, never mentioned plastic box X, PS4 does have a large amount of exclusives, vast majority are 3rd party. Sony's own studios haven't produced that many games 3+ years in. What are Sony's 1st party this gen: Killzone 4, Knack, Drive Club, Until Dawn, Ratchet/Clank, Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian, Infamous 3, Little Big Planet 3, Bloodbourne, The Order 1186 and MLB The Show series. Do you know in the first 3 years of the 3, there were 2 Uncharted games, 2 Resistance games, Killzone 2, Infamous 1, 2 Ratchet/Clank games, 2 Motorstorms, Little Big Planet 1, 2 MLB games and Warhawk. It's not even close which PS system has had the better first party support within the first 3 years. The 4 is primarily a multi-plats machine. So, yes, Sony's first party stable is light. After, this year, it should improve, only took them 4 years to do it.

@e3man01: I know this is kind of old and moot since Horizon got a 9- but I was going to agree with you that Naughty Dog is a superior developer in terms of artistic merit, but that Guerrilla Games can sit at the adults table in terms of the economic value they bring to Sony's stable.

Also, the PS3 and PS4 consoles are hard to compare straight across as you are. The PS2's unusually long life span allowed Sony to put an unusually large number of first party games into the dev pipeline for PS3, whereas the PS3's lifespan amounted to about half the PS2's.

In general, I think we're going to see fewer exclusive games going forward for each system (at least AAA scale). Games are costing more to develop, but not really selling more units..

I can see this game getting a solid 8. The next installments in this franchise will be the ones getting critical acclaim. Nonetheless, Horizon will be a pretty good game.

@crusadernights: They will certainly perfect it later down the road, but like you said, it still seems like a damn good game.

Looking forward to this, but I can't say I'm wowed by the game. Too early for there to be this kind of hype behind it. Let's see how this game is first.

@Pierce_Sparrow: At the first reveal I was confused by how excited some people were, I was thinking but we know almost nothing about the game. Maybe it was the techno-wildlife, which I do think is cool, and a little bit of dinosaur hype? :)

Based on how generous GameSpot scoring has been as of late, I would be damned if this does not score a 10/10.

@Sam3231: Might score an 8 or even a 9, but 10s are pretty rare, even if GS is very generous.

I was sold on the game until i found out it has RPG mechanics. Gonna pass for now, at least until it gets cheaper. Sick of RPG elements being thrown into games they have no place it.

Maybe if they can stick with her for longer than a few months without reverting to their old ways where it's just generic brown hair shooty man protagonist who is most likely voiced by Nolan North. Sony already had Nariko from Heavenly Sword (who incidentally was also a redhead) and you don't see much of her anymore.

Sweet. I kinda hope they change the VA though for future titles. I'm not a HUGE Ashley Burch fan as she seems to have 2 ranges, Tiny Tina and Chloe from Life is Strange.

Well it's nice they're optimistic about it...but it's a new IP that hasn't been released yet so I wouldn't go all in on it if I were Sony. Still I'm looking forward to this game too.

K, I'm really looking forward to the game as it's my most anticipated game of the year. But you many not want to count your chickens before they hatch. Let's see how well the first game does when it comes out before you start salivating over it's possible milk worthiness.

Every time Sony points to a new character and says it will be their new "icon," nobody can even remember the character existed a year later. And I'm a big Sony gamer, so I'm not Sony-bashing here, just being real about how silly the company makes themselves sometimes. If I were superstitious about it, I'd say why jinx it?

@bwats84: Yeah, I'm not talking about the many characters that BECAME icons by merit of the fantastic work done on the games. I'm talking about the characters that Sony preemptively have tried to push before the jury was in. The most recent were Sackboy and Knack. I mean... c'mon. Now, characters like Nathan Drake, or Kratos, or Solid Snake, even, BECAME icons by merit of the games themselves, not by being preemptive marketing centerpieces. And "icon of the future" implies that the IP's got legs, and specifically when they get ahead of themselves, the merch ends up crawling.

@Thanatos2k: Every company is planning the franchise, the only difference is that some talk about it and some don't. In a business where you make games, you simply can not avoid thinking about the game's potential growth in future installments.
