Honda has been granted approval by the California Department of Motor Vehicles to begin testing its self-driving automobiles outside of its testing facility and on the streets of the Golden State.

Honda joins a list of autonomous auto manufacturers approved by the CDMV that includes Tesla, Volkswagen, and Nissan, among others.

According to a Reuters report, Honda has a testing facility in Concord, CA, just north of San Francisco where its robo-cars can be tested before being let loose on the Bay Area streets.

Of the list of top 10 car models sold in the United States, Honda claimed three spots, more than any other single maker.

Does the future belong to self-driving, electric automobiles? It's a real possibility. In February, Apple reportedly began experimenting with electric car technology. And why not? Google has gotten into the auto business itself with its own self-driving vehicles.
