Hitman: Sniper Assassins Coming This Year For iOS And Android

The game is being handled by the same team behind Hitman: Sniper at Square Enix Montreal.

The Hitman series is returning to mobile platforms with a new sniping-based assassination game. Currently being developed under the working title Hitman: Sniper Assassins, it's one of the only times in the series where you won't be playing as Agent 47. Instead, you'll be playing as an agent with an entirely different number!

Unlike the predecessor Hitman: Sniper--which was handled by the same development team at Square Enix Montreal--Hitman: Sniper Assassins doesn't put you in the many disguise of Agent 47. Instead, you'll play as Agent 426, according to the short teaser trailer. This teaser clearly includes the voice of Diana Burnwood, Agent 47's longtime handler, but it's unclear what the game's plot will be.

Hitman: Sniper Assassins is coming in 2021, which will be less than a year after Hitman 3's launch. However, developer IO Interactive is no longer part of Square Enix, nor did Square Enix publish that game--IO Interactive now owns the rights to the series and published the game on its own, though it appears there is still some sort of licensing agreement in place for the mobile game.

IO Interactive said it still has full control of the Hitman IP and gave input to Square Enix Montreal on how to fit the game into the existing universe. However, its story is wholly separate from the World of Assassination trilogy that wrapped with Hitman 3.

We've seen iterations of long-range sniping modes in previous Hitman games, though the plural use of "Assassins" in the working title suggests it may be a multiplayer game. Since it's coming this year, we'll likely hear more soon. And for more announcements from Square Enix Presents--where the game was revealed--you can watch the whole thing.
