Hitman Delayed into 2016 to Increase Amount of Content Available at Launch

Delay will help deliver more episodes quicker, following launch.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

IO Interactive has announced the release of its latest Hitman title will be moved from December 2015 into March 2016.

Explaining the decision, the studio said the delay allows Hitman, which will be released digitally with a portion of the complete experience and then receive new episodes, to expand what's available at launch.

"These few extra months will mean we can add more to the launch content of the game, more than we had originally planned, and then follow with a tighter frequency of updates, which ultimately will create a better game for everyone. And in the end, that’s what we’re all looking for," it said.

"Moving a launch date is never an easy decision," the studio continued. "We know it’s frustrating to have to wait a bit longer for the game, but we truly believe it will mean we can deliver a better launch and overall experience."

IO has said it will share more details on the release date next week about the full release schedule and also further discuss the scope of the release package.

Addressing concerns about the breadth of content that will be available when the game launches, Square Enix Europe CEO Phil Rogers said that the Hitman fans play on day one won't be "unfinished."

"We want to keep the business model very simple," he said. "There's going to be one price, so we're not talking microtransactions, and it allows us to evolve the content itself... Gamers don't want unfinished content, so we're being very clear. This is going to be AAA, polished Hitman as you'd expect. But we can continue to create experiences, so the world only expands. We're experimenting."

The new Hitman is due for release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC across digital channels. A physical version of the game is also expected for release later in 2016. Square Enix has not yet confirmed exactly when a disc will be available, but it is likely after all the content has been released digitally.

So what's the new date then? Something tells me this was just to avoid the fall/winter rush of games coming out soon which would crush this game's release and overshadow it completely.

To eceryone thinking this may be a full game. Somebody released a poor preview article in which the wording they use made it sound like they had changed their minds. Also a person at square said "this will be a full game at launch." Not true. Content is episodic.

Increase the amount of DLC available at launch, you mean.

Remember when you used to be able to buy a game and it was a whole game? I can't stand what the gaming industry is becoming.

Destiny is the epitome of this business model that I hate. Release half a game, then get all the sheep to pay for more content that should have been available upon release.

@sick_sk: While I agree, that wasn't the case with Hitman.

It has been VERY poorly communicated to the masses what their business model for the game is, and if people actually do research about it, it's pretty awesome.

someone finally learned a lesson from Destiny that's better to push back a game then release half a game on time? amazing. :) not really into this type of game much but nice when a developer holds off.. easier to fix it b4 launch then recall the game like i heard the batman game basically had to do by stopping sales so they could fix it.

Was just thinking: If Square Enix is smart they would delay this game. Offer a complete experience. And shut up about "all the free DLC you are getting post launch"

@R4gn4r0k:The only damn game I want from these guys is a new Legacy of Kain.

They can officially stick this episodic Hitman rubbish up their collective hiney holes.

The phrase of sticking something whence it came has never been so apt.

@Cassius103: It's a big fault of Gamestop and things too for not making sure they understood before claiming it was Episodic or Unfinished.

Which it's not.

@edviges: Sure, Uncharted is more popular. But for me there really is no competition.

Hitman >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Uncharted

I liked the Uncharted games. But after 3 I had my fill. I didn't need a fourth one. Hitman on the other hand ? Can't get enough.

Good, releasing a game with lack of content at launch is simply unacceptable in my opinion. It doesn't matter how much content they plan to add later (for free or otherwise), the content at launch should always be sufficient to justify the price tag.

@4kgamer_lmxxx: This notion that the game was releasing with half-content, or some early access/episodic model is COMPLETELY false.

I agree with you, no game should be released unfinished, but that isn't what was happening here.

It's different, and people are not understanding what they are doing. GS's pisspoor reporting the last while isn't helping either.

" "Moving a launch date is never an easy decision," the studio continued."

But a decision that is ALWAYS made. So what's the conclusion here? Now when anybody announces some date, you instantly know they LIE!

@Ripper_TV: They are pushing because of outroar because the game is releasing incomplete but dishing out content as time passes with more content, by pushing it outa little later, more content will be there at release to allow to respond to the fans.

@Ripper_TV: I think it's more that publishers push certain dates on developer's. The problem is publishers don't take a lot of actual development issues into consideration and are more concerned about having a hot holiday release.

I can't help but feel this is in direct response to the endless imbeciles who think this is an unfinished game being released. Despite repeated, specific statements to the contrary.

Appearently, it's only considered DLC if you have to pay for it.

You can't argue with stupid though... so what're ya gonna' do, eh? *sigh* I ****ing hate people.

So basically your bluff has been called and now you're going back to the drawing board with your tail between your legs? I'll get it used AFTER all the content has been released.

@ji-high: No, it was always going to be a full game at launch, their DLC plans are just included in your initial 60$, and are heavily based on player feedback, instead of just creating random game content and then nickel and diming you with every little thing.

That's what it always was, that's what they've been saying since day 1.

It was never early access.
It was never episodic.

@ji-high: Back to the drawing board means starting the game from 0. Do you really believe they can do that and release a final game in less than a year? That totally made no sense.
