The Broadway hit Hamilton is finally coming to your TV, and you won't need to pay hundreds of dollars for tickets. Back in February, Disney announced there was a big-screen version of the award-winning musical featuring the original cast. And the movie was going to arrive in October 2021; however, Disney made the surprise announcement that it is coming to Disney+ in July.

The Hamilton movie will now be available on Disney's streaming platform worldwide on July 3, a full 15 months earlier than expected. While several movies have had their releases moved from theatrical to streaming because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, these were films that could not have been released this year on their scheduled dates. Hamilton, on the other hand, wasn't due to hit theaters until October 15 next year.

In a statement, Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda said, "I'm so proud of how beautifully [director] Tommy Kail has brought Hamilton to the screen. He's given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house. I'm so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I'm so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I'm so glad that we're able to make it happen. I'm so proud of this show. I can't wait for you to see it."

The big-screen adaptation brings back Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Daveed Diggs in a dual role as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Jonathan Groff as King George, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, and Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler.

The movie is compiled from three separate live performances, with extra footage shot subsequently without an audience. In February, it was reported that Disney paid an incredible $75 million for worldwide rights to release Hamilton, the largest sum ever paid for a finished film.

It will be interesting to see how theater chains react to such a high profile theatrical release being moved to streaming and released so soon. Last month, Universal's success with Trolls: World Tour, which was also given a digital release instead of theatrical, caused a feud with AMC, which has stated it will no longer play Universal films when theaters reopen.
