Hideo Kojima Will Be Inducted Into Gaming Hall of Fame

"Hideo Kojima's career-defining works have shaped much of how the video game industry approaches cinematic storytelling and player engagement."

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences on Tuesday announced that Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima will become the 21st inductee to the organization's Hall of Fame. He will accept the award in person during a ceremony at the 19th D.I.C.E. Awards in Las Vegas on February 18.

No Caption Provided

And who will present the award to Kojima?

None other than film director and writer Guillermo del Toro. Kojima and del Toro worked together on Silent Hills before its cancellation and are hoping to one day find their way back to each other for a future project.

"Hideo Kojima's career-defining works have shaped much of how the video game industry approaches cinematic storytelling and player engagement," AIAS president Martin Rae said in a statement. "As one of the most well-loved and well-respected designers of our time, it is a great honor for the Academy to induct him into our Hall of Fame. Hideo is a game creator whose eyes havealways looked towards the future, and we look forward to his thoughts on the D.I.C.E. Summit stage."

AIAS Hall of Fame status is given to game creators "who have been instrumental in the development of highly influential games and moving a particular genre forward. These individuals demonstrate the highest level of creativity and innovation, resulting in significant product influence on a scale that expands the scope of the industry."

Previous AIAS Hall of Fame inductees have included people like Leslie Benzies, Dan Houser, and Sam Houser of Rock Games, as well as Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, Valve's Gabe Newell, and BioWare founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka. Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto was the first inductee, back in 1998.

Last month, Kojima left Konami after two decades with the Japanese publisher. He now runs his own studio in Japan, Kojima Productions, and is working with Sony on a new PlayStation 4 and PC game.

"I want to create something that's what people expect, but at the same time will have something new that people haven't seen before," he explained in an interview last month.

Good; Kojima got majorly screwed over by Konami when they banned him from showing up to claim any Awards for MGSV.

I'm not even a die hard fan of the Souls games (I like them very much but not as much as other people worship them), but I really feel like Hidetaka Miyazaki absolutely deserves an award like this. A true visionary. Although he's only worked on one particular thing and we've yet to see what else he can create. I'm very excited to know that though. Not even because I'm excited to play it (well of course I am), but the degree at which a human brain can come up with new concepts, and channel their ideas through a whole team of developer, and create something revolutionary and astonishing... That takes real talent and gravitas. I respect that.

This man has been making games for about as long as I've been alive (a while lol) and is largely responsible for the entire stealth genre. He became a rockstar after the 1st MGS and, just like any one of us would have done, used his reputation to hire killer teams around him from then on out. People on here calling him overrated clearly aren't looking at his entire body of work. This is well deserved #fuckkonami

hey! are they also giving awards to all his team mates and co-workers at konami/kojima productions? how about one to snake plissken, you know because if it wasn't for him big boss wouldn't look like he does today, how about an award to that classical russian composer? kojima took one of his peices and used it as the metal gear main theme, well until they were found out kojima took it "whoopsies what coincidence" anyways.... ouchies another example of how succesful people can become after stealing ideas/concepts/using people.... well this is the world we live in

@Flynner102: It's really the team at large responsible for the games that bare his name. Kojima however deserves the award for product management and helming so many great works. It was an accomplishment completing MGSV under such dire circumstances. The project could have easily collapsed years prior to completion.

@Redsyrup: Judging by the ending of MGS V he didn't really complete it more like stitched it up in such a way that it was passable to be sold.

That game was clearly released prematurely.

@mjc0961: People credit Hideo Kojima with the invention of the stealth genre with Metal Gear (1986) without knowing that it was done years before, the stealth in MGS is piss poor really and I hardly think of them as such, they're more or less action games with sneaking segments. The only game of the franchise I'd give credit for having some proper stealth mechanics is Phantom Pain (which is still a godawful and extremely overrated game in my opinion).

@teaspoon2424: Many devs should be recognised but inducted into the hall of fame? If you look at the people in the hall of fame there are some colossal figures of the gaming industry in it.

I mean Kojima everyone says revolutionised the cinematic story telling of gaming. Yet his games are some of the worst written convoluted stories ever created.

As far as I'm concerned he didn't so much revolutionise the genre more like he got there first. Since then there have been attempts that blow his efforts out of the water.

Kojima's presence in the Hall of Fame devalues the award.

@Dannystaples14: makes me happy to see people like you around, placing kojima in hall of fame is kinda ridiculous taking into account all the stuff/concepts he also stole to make those games/characters, so pretty much a hall of famer is a "thief", but anyways this award is not that premium anymore

Not a big fan of Metal Gear as I only played 3 of them (there is still time lol). I did enjoy the Boktai games a lot though. Not sure how much involvement he had in the making of Boktai? I think he deserves to be inducted and congrats to him.

So I guess anyone who writes overly convoluted stories gets awards now?

I thought the idea of being a writer was to be GOOD at it? Most of the dialogue in previous games was coma inducing and was about 45 minutes longer than it had any need to be.

If you went to see a movie and they just went into six hours of back story that added nothing to the actual movie it would be panned.

I guess games don't need decent writing though?

@Dannystaples14: Considering games didn't have writing like that before Metal Gear, it was considered ambitious. Also, you have to consider that some people love the exposition and depth. Sure, it was long-winded and not really THAT important in the grand scheme of things, but it's the kind of details you see in like Star Wars wikis that have been pulled from books and other forms of media. Metal Gear only has games, so he stuck all the small details in the games.

I have the first 4 Metal Gear Solid's cutscenes fused into 4 "movies" and I watch them every few years because I love the story, but hate playing the older games. (3 and 4 are fine, but 1 and 2 are way too dated.) Next to Star Wars, it's my favorite series to delve deep into the lore and history.

@KahnArtizt: It would have been fine if he made a normal game and then wrote a book or something but trying to force that much stuff into the games bogged the series down.

Hideo Kojima, the father of stealth games, deserves it more than some naysayers may realize. He may not always create the best narrative, but his approach to design and gameplay mechanics have been profoundly game-changing for this industry. Kojima brought us the first mainstream stealth game via Metal Gear in 1987, only to perfect it years later with Metal Gear Solid, one of the first 3D stealth titles alongside Tenchu. Any game with stealth mechanics -- be it a large part of the game or not -- like Assassin's Creed, Hitman, Shadows of Mordor, Uncharted 2 and 3, Dishonored, Batman Arkham series, The Last of Us, Splinter Cell, etc. employ many of MGS's mechanics and AI design philosophy. Whether you like the series or not, to deny the immense influence of Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, and Kojima would be myopic.

@thunderborne: He isn't the father of stealth games, Muse and Sega are, they made the first stealth games in 1981 with Castle Wolfenstein and 005 , the MGS games were always terrible as stealth games and in my opinion mediocre at absolute best as games in general. MGS got mopped across the floor with Thief: The Dark Project (1998) in every regard.

@repulsive44552: Kojima was not the inventor of stealth games, but critics consider him as the father of stealth games because he's widely credited for shaping it and propelling it as a mainstream genre. I am not sure where I stand on the debate between Metal Gear Solid vs. Thief. I never thought of one being better than the other. I enjoyed the narrative and espionage aspect of MGS and I appreciated the integration of audio cues in Thief.

@thunderborne: All people say when they hear Kojima is "convoluted story". He didn't just write the games, he designed them with a vision. The stories were metaphors for a multitude of different subjects. It's his outlet for his zany ideas. Some work, others don't but to pidgeonhole his games into the category of "convoluted and nonsensical", like many people do, is to completely disregard his talent in game design.

Strip the story away from MGSV and you have one of the most well-designed, near-perfect stealth games ever made. Every time I repeat a mission, I figure out a better or more interesting approach to take and there are dozens more ways to do anything in that game. Manipulating well-designed AI is what stealth games are all about.

@KahnArtizt:

I couldn't agree more with both of you guys.

I think people always go for the 'convoluted' crap because they either don't know or act like that they don't know that he's first and foremost a great game designer/director. Mechanically speaking, we are going to have to wait a long time to see a stealth game with better gameplay than MGS V. The animations will be hard to top as well.

The lore and story are just delicious icing on a fantastic cake.

P.S: I didn't even know there was a 'Hall of Fame' for game designers. :p Who else is in it?

About time if you ask me. As far as I'm concerned Kojima is the Hiyao Miyazaki, or Kubrick of video games. His stories might be deeply flawed, even stupid on many occasions, but I have never seen a developer experiment so heavily with story and gameplay elements before or since that has done so well with it's audience and others. The amount of detail is something very few other developers manage to pull off too with all the secrets, hidden dialog, collectables, and Easter eggs.

No amount of ZeroPunctuation fanboys parroting Yahtzee will ever change that.

P.s, I love Yahtzee and ZP.
