Here's Why Zelda: Breath of The Wild Has Voice Acting, But Link Still Doesn't Speak

"I have these moments where I want to leave impressions on users."

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild producer Eiji Aonuma has discussed the reasoning behind using voice acting in the game, which is a first for Nintendo's beloved adventure series.

Speaking to Polygon, Aonuma said voice acting was necessary to make certain moments more impactful.

Now Playing: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Demo at E3 2016

"It's really difficult to leave an impression on players with just text. It's not that I made everything voiced. But I have these moments where I want to leave impressions on users. I add voice there."

One character that won't be given a voice, however, is series protagonist Link, who will continue to be a mute avatar for the player to project themselves onto.

"If Link said something the user doesn't agree with, that relationship between the user and Link would be lost," Aonuma added, explaining the decision to keep link as a silent protagonist.

Elsewhere in the interview, Aonuma discussed Breath of the Wild's sci-fi elements, saying it was designed to be a contrast to the very natural world the game is set in.

"Link basically adventures through a ruined world. I wanted to add technology as the opposite side of that," he said. "I thought it would be interesting for Link to use technology to explore through this wild and ruined world. I figured that would add another layer to the game."

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is set to release for Wii U and NX in 2017.

During E3 2016 Aonuma revealed there are more people working on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild than any other game in Nintendo’s history. You can read a brief Q&A with Aonuma discussing how working with such a large team impacts his creative process here.

Really looking forward to playing this game. Just not sure if I should buy the NX right from the start and play it on that, or stick with the Wii U? I don't mind being an early adopter on a game, especially if the new Zelda is out the same day.

I've always considered like to be more of an avatar you play the game as rather than an actual character. Link has never been a deep or profound character so I can't really connect with a that.

He was always a tool to push a block puzzle, or a means to an end to get to the next area. I feel like I know the history of the tools he uses in the games more than the actual character himself.

Good Choice. I agree with the reasoning. I'll never want to hear Link speak

I'm so hyped for this game :D

I don't think I'd like Link with a voice; I completely agree with what he said here, it wouldn't feel right.

YES, because I feel so deeply connected to Link that now if he says 'Yes' whereas I wanted to say 'No' I would be lost. And when the girl in the trailer calls me "Link" I'll still feel connected, why ? because he doesn't talk, that's why !

Seriously the only thing "connecting" me with the character was changing his name, which will be most likely removed for the first time in the franchise I think. So I don't get the point.

Ah, so Link is still going to be the most bland character in gaming history, cool.

Nintendo, get with the times.

@txuzai: Technically, Freeman is the most bland character, as you almost never even see his face, whereas with Link, you see all his expressions and his actual self.

@txuzai: Right, making an artistic decision for your own property is so last decade... Every time I read "get with the times", I'm reminded how that immediately dates something to the time period it was made. No thanks.

This is a style now, a conscious, meaningful choice that I agree with. The silent hero that you can project a personality onto if you choose to. If you leave Link as is, he's the strong, quiet, dedicated hero, doing what he must to once again save Hyrule. Otherwise you can project a personality onto him of your choosing, let your "imagination" run wild a bit, I know it's tough when you've been hand fed everything elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, I love voice acting, but just because you can do a thing, doesn't mean you should or have to.

Nintendo is at least 10 years behind everybody else in the industry.

@Triton: True that. They would care that they can't progress in the game because they can't figure out how to solve the puzzles in the game. Then they'd go back to CoD / GTA where they are given instant gratification for anything they do.

Hopefully NX will be £199/£250, not paying for another PS4 price like product.

@BLiTZ_156: He explains why, and I agree with it. I have grown up with Link being mute, because it allows me to think of my own accent or type of answer even when you are given a "yes - no" choice.

It doesn't frikin' have voice acting!

So far we've heard a single voice for some unknown character that kinda talks over the game but ZERO voice acting on the ACTUAL in-game NPCs that we've seen thus far, the old guy and the guys in the shrines.

So, right now, I'd say it doesn't have what we would all consider proper in-game voice acting, because, unless we're morons, we'd expect that to mean all/most of the NPCs actually talk.

Right now, it lacks voice acting as I interpret it, just like every other Zelda game—and that's a BAD thing imo.

@amaneuvering: Super Mario Galaxy games have had close to 0 voice acting too. That didn't stop them from being near-perfect games.

@amaneuvering: Nope, not a bad thing, Zelda is the best with or without voice acting.
