Here's Why Zelda: Breath of The Wild Has Voice Acting, But Link Still Doesn't Speak

"I have these moments where I want to leave impressions on users."

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild producer Eiji Aonuma has discussed the reasoning behind using voice acting in the game, which is a first for Nintendo's beloved adventure series.

Speaking to Polygon, Aonuma said voice acting was necessary to make certain moments more impactful.

Now Playing: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Demo at E3 2016

"It's really difficult to leave an impression on players with just text. It's not that I made everything voiced. But I have these moments where I want to leave impressions on users. I add voice there."

One character that won't be given a voice, however, is series protagonist Link, who will continue to be a mute avatar for the player to project themselves onto.

"If Link said something the user doesn't agree with, that relationship between the user and Link would be lost," Aonuma added, explaining the decision to keep link as a silent protagonist.

Elsewhere in the interview, Aonuma discussed Breath of the Wild's sci-fi elements, saying it was designed to be a contrast to the very natural world the game is set in.

"Link basically adventures through a ruined world. I wanted to add technology as the opposite side of that," he said. "I thought it would be interesting for Link to use technology to explore through this wild and ruined world. I figured that would add another layer to the game."

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is set to release for Wii U and NX in 2017.

During E3 2016 Aonuma revealed there are more people working on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild than any other game in Nintendo’s history. You can read a brief Q&A with Aonuma discussing how working with such a large team impacts his creative process here.

Now that they are reminding people that Link is just a shell for the player with no voice, I'm actually starting to be a little disappointed that they are not going to have a female link option. Never thought about it because I'm always me (I always rename) when I play Link anyways. Link isn't really a character with characteristics since he always need some type of sidekick to talk and make decisions for him.

@dcoutten: He's not a "shell". He's Link. What is meant is that you channel through him, not that you are him.

Read it again: "a mute avatar for the player to project themselves onto"

Very clearly says that we project onto him. Not that we are him. Male Link is a cultural icon, a staple, and a legend. I don't see anyone asking for female Mario.

@dcoutten: No, posting a PC gender slant comment in a topic that has nothing whatsoever to do with Link's gender is PC.

If I ask you what kind of coffee would you like to have, and you say that the female race needs more CEO jobs, its called being PC. Don't change the topic to bring something completely outside the scope of the original conversation for personal agendas.

Do you see PC guys trolling Horizon Zero Dawn topics asking for them to change the female protagonist into a dude? Or how about PC men trolling Metroid topics asking them to change Samus into a dude?

No, because PC has a limit, when you start trolling in the name of PC, then you are no longer PC, but rather just a troll.

Learn your limit.

@kazeswen: Since you edited your comment I have to respond twice now. smh.

The protagonist in Horizon Zero Dawn is an actual character with a personality. You are playing her, in her story. In the legend of Zelda you are meant to play your own story saving the land. If you change the girl in HZD you are possible changing the story. If you change Link you change nothing....nothing. When pokemon (another silent protagonist) gave the option to be a girl, nothing changed. The fact that you can change Link's name shows that he is meant to be you and that he is not his own character.

You are not even making smart arguments here so I'm tired of talking to you. Good day.

@dcoutten: just in case you ignore other my comment:

"a mute avatar for the player to project themselves onto"

You're not Link. Link is Link. You just project yourself onto him. Anyone can control him, but he's still himself. We can control what he does, how he fights, how be moves, where he goes, but we still don't control a lot of things about him because he's still himself. Probably can't make him kill Zelda, for example. Save gender complaints for games where you create your own character. Those games have no excuse since the character is supposed to be you. This is not a game that "you" are in.

@dcoutten: You're sexist, that's that. Learn to relate to the opposite sex. Learn to project yourself on characters that are not your sex. It'll help you become a more rounded person.

Like I said some of the greatest gaming characters I've ever played were female, and I'm a dude.

And Link does have a story, he has one in every single Zelda game. Have you ever played a single Zelda game. Link is not some randomly generated RPG character like in Oblivion, he has a gender and a story related to his gender.

Noticed you purposely ignored my other comment since you cannot defeat my argument because you are sexist.

@kazeswen:

Wow. I was just about to reply to you but you are just (to put it in a nice way) not a smart person that there really is no point. How am I ignoring your third comment when I had to reply AGAIN (2 times) to your second comment since you edited while/or after I replied to it originally? I even said "Since you edited your comment I have to respond twice now. smh." so obviously you haven't even written your third comment thus I haven't even read it yet.

So yea now I really am purposely ignoring you.

@dcoutten: So all PC folks love insulting people they don't agree with. I've been called a moron, twice, and now I'm being called a not so smart person by you, for essentially calling you out on your sexist double standards.

LOL. You PC folks make me laugh.

Still you got no answer for my reply.

Like I said, don't be so sexist learn to relate and project yourself in the opposite sex. Its the key to being a well rounded individuals. I'm a guy but I can relate and project myself just fine in a female role.

@kazeswen:

In article: "One character that won't be given a voice, however, is series protagonist Link, who will continue to be a mute avatar for the player to project themselves onto."

What I said: "Now that they are reminding people that Link is just a shell for the player with no voice, I'm actually starting to be a little disappointed that they are not going to have a female link option."

How gender relates: Can't fully project myself into a man.

In article: "If Link said something the user doesn't agree with, that relationship between the user and Link would be lost," Aonuma added, explaining the decision to keep link as a silent protagonist."

What I said: "Link isn't really a character with characteristics since he always need some type of sidekick to talk and make decisions for him."

How gender relates: The relationship between me (dcoutten) is always going to be partially lost since I am a woman.

Another thing I said: "Never thought about [being a female Link] because I'm always me (I always rename) when I play Link anyways."

Obviously no "agenda" here as I have no problem with original Link.

Go away you are wasting both our time.

@dcoutten: Do you see how this same logic can be applied to every video game ever made starring a woman. I.E Lightning from Final Fantasy, Samus from Metroid. The new heroine from Horizon Zero Dawn, etc, etc, etc.

By your logic because men cannot relate to these female characters, then all men should be allowed to troll every single topic about these games asking for them to change the female protagonists into male ones?

So, just cause Samus, Lightning, Aloy (Horizon) are female characters, men cannot relate to them and cannot project themselves onto them? How sexist are you? Really, do you hear what you are saying?

So men cannot relate to female characters and all female characters need to be changed to men, and women cannot relate to male characters and hence all male characters need to be changed to women?

Do you realize how sexist you are making yourself out to be?

I as a man, found some of the most profound gaming characters ever to be women. Time and time again, I profess that Beyond Two Souls is one of the greatest games ever made, and I totally was able to relate to the female lead, and would never in a million years ask that she be made into a male character.

Learn to relate to the opposite sex and stop being sexist. Gaming characters can be both male and female and the player should be able to relate regardless, based on the character not the sex.

You're sexist, that's that.

Thank god. Hearing Link talk would be super awkward. Protagonists should be silent, imo. Link and Gordon FTW!

Just love how this game has evolved so much over the years. Even Gamespot uses it as a loading icon for loading comments. Fantastic. Really look forward to this game and the NX. If the Nx shows that it has really great potential for future generation of games I'm down to getting it.

I'd find it funny (although out of character) if Link pulled a Matthew and started swearing whenever Ganondorf does something nefarious again.

If your projecting yourself into Link, your doing it all wrong. Link is a link from him to you, not you to him. Link doesnt become you, you become Link.

That argument is pretty weak. To me its about tradition. I have no bond with Link and never do. Silent protagonist do that for some people. Thats why when people brought up the female protagonist stuff, my response was what difference does it make It changes essentially nothing and if its not adding a new wrinkle to the game why do it? Link may as well be a naked slug monster for all I care, I have no attachment to him. Its projecting yourself in a sense onto Link. It's a tried and true method.

It's about the world your playing in and the tale of fighting monsters in dungeons.

Some of you guys kill me. With videogames basically turning into feature length films, its good to have a game that doesnt try to be like everyone else. I agree that at times dialogue is better but as far as link, its obviously more than just trying to have a silent protagonist. Its more about tradition. We like link the way he is. Its become his thing. If we change everything about the game to make it like the other games then it loses its appeal and what makes it special. And the people who say its because of bad storytelling that link doesnt talk. Well thats just preposterous. Link has always communicated without talking. Its usually clear what he wouldve said. Furthermore 99 percent of the story is dialougue but u wanna focus on the one percent that isnt. Zelda has always had good storytelling and link actually physically talking has nothing to do with how good the story is

Sounds good to me. Honestly, with the way Link screams and yelps, I'd hate to hear what that sounds like when he starts saying full sentences.

Silent protagonists are bad story telling and way overused in video games. If you don't want the audience to disagree with what link says then write his dialogue well and you won't have that problem. This game will still be awesome but it's time videogames moved past the silent protagonists BS.

What 'well written dialog' is varies from person to person.

@Mogan: well written dialogue doesn't very from person to person it's universal. It's why Quinton Tarantino' s films are generally so good and why Shakespeare is still relevant today. Maybe link is better silent I don't know. But perhaps the story would benefit from him having some personality or backstory or a reason to care about what happens to him at all.

@metalmountain: Quinton Tarantino and Shakespeare aren't universally loved, because well written dialog is subjective. And we're talking about a character who has never spoken over decades of games, so every player has developed their own idea about what Link would said if he did speak. No writer could possibly write lines for Link that please everybody.

@metalmountain: or, you know, videogames tell a story in a different way from passive mediums, and as such having a silent protagonist is totally valid. it's not like the character itself is mute, rather his lines are implied, and the wording is left for the player to decide.

@BrunoBRS: yea with link it's different because they imply his lines. I agree. Voicing link would probably be weird too I'll admit. I guess it works ok in zelda but other silent protagonists are pretty annoying.
