Here's Why Dragon Quest 11 On Switch Is Still So Far Off

This delay is Unreal.

44 Comments

Dragon Quest XI is coming this year to PC and PlayStation 4, but the Switch version could be next year or beyond. In an interview from PAX East, game producer Hokuto Okamoto explained just what's happened to set the Switch version so far behind. It appears to be a case of the game needing some elbow grease to work with its engine.

"It's true that the Nintendo Switch version is under development at this moment in time," Okamoto said via translator. "Specifically with regards to the development, this game was developed on the Unreal Engine, but the version for Unreal Engine needs to be updated, I suppose, in order to support Switch. In that sense, the development is still expected to take a very long time. It's still a long ways out."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Dragon Quest 11 Release Date Announced For PS4, PC; Switch Much Later

The company made clear that the Switch version is definitely coming West, albeit later than the others. He went on to explain that the team did consider holding both console versions back to release simultaneously, but ultimately decided to move ahead with the PS4 version instead.

"Of course, we did consider releasing PS4 and a Switch version around the same time if that was even a possibility, but right now the outlook for the Switch version is still unclear at this moment in time. The Japan team, they wanted to release Dragon Quest a XI and bring it overseas as soon as possible for our fans overseas, which is why they proceeded with the PS4 [and] Steam version[s] this time."

The PC and PlayStation 4 versions of Dragon Quest XI have been slated for September 4. But that news was accompanied by mixed bad news for Nintendo fans. The Switch version was delayed for at-the-time unexplained technical reasons, while the 3DS version was said to be not coming to the West at all. In the case of the latter, it appears more due to market considerations, as the statement cited business strategy.

The PC and PlayStation 4 versions will include some changes from the Japanese game released last year. It will include English voiceover, an overhauled menu and UI, a dash function, a harder Draconian Quest mode, and a first-person camera mode.

@silexeco: Never going to come out of Japan. Only the PS4 and Steam version are coming out with Switch version probably in 2019 at the earliest.

If Nintendo will not release a powerful console, soon will become a software only developer.

@scirocco7: I'd rather Nintendo keep doing what they are currently doing. They bring uniqueness to the industry. If they followed Microsoft and Sony, the current generation would be 3 different shaped PC's.

With this strategy there it goes.

Wii u failed because of power lack and 3rd party support lack.

Switch started real good but I don't think this will continue, as Wii u lacking power and also 3d party support. Only indie games and ports don't make a successful console. We will see...

@scirocco7: No, the Wii U failed because it was an under baked Switch. It was only partially portable with poor controls. I view it as Switch Prototype V1, because that is exactly what it is.

@scirocco7:

Lack of power didn't prevent the Gameboy, DS, 3DS, Wii, NES, or PS2 from succeeding. Also, the situation surrounding the Wii U and the Switch are completely different from each other. First, the Switch actually has great consumer awareness, and a gimmick that actually sells.

@doctor_mg: gameboy, ps2 and NES was the most powerful console on release and gathered a lot of momentum due to other competitor releasing late. Also as u said, consumer awareness.

@sakaixx:

Early releases didn't help the Wii U, Saturn, Turbografx, Dreamcast, etc. Which were also the most powerful consoles at their time of release.

I'm just saying that a disparity in power has never been the determining factor in console sales. Based on the Switch's success so far, it still isn't.

@doctor_mg: u should also remember that by the time wii u was out it was obselete cause it was using old hardware (in term of it cannot run next gen game) and ps4 announcement was just 4-5 month later. Same with dreamcast, ps2 was announced just after dreamcast was released. Remember dreamcast had a succesful debut with over 500k in a week or 2.

@doctor_mg: yes. I have to say that you are right. Personally I bought switch but I regret it. I was waiting more major 3d party. Except this I don't like all these mini and indie games in store and also on prices of major games that I can find in PS4 store.

@scirocco7: That sucks that you regret it. Hopefully more third party comes for you. A big part of that is supporting the "major" third party releases that do come to the Switch though. My advice, if you want more third party content on the Switch try to buy all that you can. Gotta say though, this year is substantially better than last year regarding third party, though it's still missing major games.

The Switch is already outdated, it’s as simple as that. Nintendo is still hasn’t learned from last generation.

So its the Wii and WiiU 3rd party situation all over again - released late and seriously dumbed down versions.

There's a pretty high probability that the Switch version might have a bunch of exclusive new content whenever it is finally ready, a la VIII on 3DS. New party members, story, dungeons, quests, etc.... Or it could be much dinkier than that, maybe only costumes and some items/equipment. But I'd say there's virtually no chance of them releasing this with zero new content over the PS4 to promote it.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if, with no 3DS SKU proper in the West, they're planning on including a port of the 3DS version for an all-in-one release. Something to consider....

@sakaixx: Without the gimmick they wouldn't be able to compete with PlayStation. They have never done anything that would demonstrate they can properly utilize cutting edge technology.

DQ 8 is one of the best rpgs I ever played. Tried my luck with IX, but the game... is even more childish and dumb than usual, I didn't like it, lol It's unreal how successful this series is, it's so simple, the Toriyama design was used to the point of exhaustion, etc.. But I am still interested, maybe I will give it a shot with the PC release. Now talking about the switch version, at least the Switch will receive something. After years of Wii and Wii-u, the nintendo fans can't complain about any port, that's the reality.

@og_gamerzzz: certainly it will be problematic to get some games ported to the switch due to the hardware limitations among other factors. nintendo may need to take control of publishing duties more often than not with some 3rd party games, or at the least strike a deal where it subsidises part of the porting costs, otherwise many publishers may not find it worth the time and financial investment to do so themselves. more AAA games need to hit the switch and at the same date as the other ports for the platform to remain healthy in the years to come.

I'll patiently wait for the Switch version, but it does suck that there is no 3DS version being localized. I thought the style was really cool.

@doctor_mg: as soon as I heard about the 3ds version I went down to my local ebgames and had them put it on a tentative "preorder" because I wasnt sure if the 3ds version or ps4 version would be coming out I wanted both versions but what I reckon the real reason for the 3ds version not being released in the west is because they are putting it on the switch and nintendo dont want to allow them to port both versions. which is silly because they could have had a cross play option for the 3ds/switch.

@locke90:

Honestly, I think Nintendo would be fine with them putting out both versions. I mean, especially since the Switch version is coming out much later than the PS4 version. I, actually, think that Square Enix doesn't want to localize it because 3DS software sales are so low here in America now.

Yeah, if September wasn't already pretty packed with Tomb Raider, Spiderman, and Spyro I'm not sure I'd resist the urge. But I think I'll buy Spiderman and I'm sure Super Smash Bros will come out around that time too.

@doctor_mg: fair enough. i prefer certain genre of games on handhelds (such as strategy rpgs etc.) but i generally game on the big screen with a proper controller. dq xi is the type of experience that needs the big screen to fully appreciate the presentation it has to offer in my opinion. i suppose some games are more or less suited to the big screen than others. the lack of time obviously restricts your options of course.

Actually, RPGS are the exact type of game that lend themselves very well to handhelds for me, as they are often huge timesinks.
