Han Solo has been cast. After months of speculation it has been confirmed that Alden Ehrenreich will play the young space smuggler in the upcoming Star Wars spinoff.

Deadline have confirmed that Ehrenreich will star in the film, which is to be helmed by 21 Jump Street and Lego Movie directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord. Ehrenreich was seen most recently in the Coen brothers' comedy Hail Caesar!, and also appeared in Stoker and Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.

Earlier this week, Miller tweeted a first official image from the film, which is currently in pre-production:

Few details are known about the movie, which has been written by Star Wars veteran Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon. It is expected to take place between Episodes III and IV, and in March Disney boss Bob Iger revealed that the film would also feature Solo's trusty co-pilot Chewbacca.

The Han Solo film is currently set for a release on May 25, 2018. The first Star Wars spinoff, Rogue One, hits cinemas on December 16, 2016.
