Here's When Shrek 5 Is Reportedly Coming
Come back to my swamp!
The fifth mainline Shrek movie will premiere in 2019, according to sources speaking to The Hollywood Reporter. Also reportedly debuting that year from DreamWorks will be an animated film titled Shadows, from comedy writers Edgar Wright and David Walliams.
These will be the first movies released by DreamWorks following NBC Universal's $3.8 billion acquisition of the company earlier this year. According to the report, Universal will greenlight two DreamWorks movies per year, though it's unclear if two will come out every year.
Universal also owns Illumination Entertainment, which is behind Despicable Me, Minions, and The Secret Life of Pets. Some other big-name DreamWorks properties include Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon.
The first Shrek debuted in 2001, with sequels Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek The Third (2007), and Shrek: Forever After (2010) each following three years apart. Holiday specials Shrek the Halls and Scared Shrekless were also released, in 2007 and 2010 respectively.
There is no word on what the story might be for the fifth Shrek film or if Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz would reprise their roles from the previous movies.
As for the other film, Shadows, there are no specifics at this point, but DreamWorks called it a "fascinating concept."
"We've always been intrigued by a film concept involving shadows, and now with Edgar's signature comedic style and abilities as a natural storyteller, audiences will be treated to a truly captivating and energetic tale," DreamWorks executives Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria told Deadline in November 2015.
