Here's What Pokemon Go Might Look Like on HoloLens

What might a Pokemon Go-like game look like on Microsoft's augmented reality headset, HoloLens? A new concept video has an answer.

A company called CapitolaVR created the concept video you see below. Made using the Unity engine with the HoloLens SDK, this is very much a work-in-progress and is meant to be an overview of what something like Pokemon Go could look like on HoloLens. As you'll see, the player pinches their index finger and thumb together to throw a Poke Ball--Pikachu, Squirtle, and Charmander are in the demo--while the Poke Ball then zips back to the user. Take a look:

"For now the Pokemon are randomly generated within a mapped environment," CapitolaVR boss David Robustelli told UploadVR.

He added that the team is now working on developing systems that map different gestures to specific interactions like opening your inventory or activating a map.

As Robustelli said, the Pokemon in this demo are placed within a defined area. A bigger challenge will be to find out how to utilize the Google Maps API and enable it for HoloLens, he said.

"But I'm sure that in the upcoming years when more and more people are developing for this hardware also, more things will be standard to use in tools and apps," he explained.

Another thing to note is CapitolaVR has no connection to Pokemon Go developer Niantic Labs and the studio said it doesn't have any plans to make a real game from this. It's more of an experiment to see what might be possible.

For its part, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told CNBC this week that he believes the massive popularity of Pokemon Go could be a boon for HoloLens.

"This Pokemon interest will hopefully will translate into a lot of interest in HoloLens," he said. "I think it's fantastic to see these augmented reality applications getting built, because the best thing that can happen when you're creating a new category is for applications that are these killer apps, whether it be game or in the industrial scenario, to get invested in."
