The original story is below.

To celebrate Pokemon Day next week, Niantic will hold an event inside of Pokemon Go. Starting on February 26, every Pikachu that players encounter in the game will be wearing a "festive party hat."

If you catch Pikachu during the event, you will get to keep its party hat forever, The Pokemon Company announced on its website. The event ends on March 6. Unfortunately, The Pokemon Company did not share a picture of Pikachu's hat; we'll add it to this story if it's made available.

Pokemon Day is February 27. That is the 21st anniversary of the series, which debuted in Japan in 1996.

This is not the first time that Niantic has given Pikachu a special hat as part of a limited-time event. Last year's Pokemon Go holiday event let players catch a version of Pikachu that wears a festive hat. The Christmas Pikachu could be evolved into a hat-wearing version of Raichu, though it remains to be seen if that can happen with the new party hat.

For more on Pokemon Day 2017 and how it will be celebrated, check out this roundup on the Pokemon website.

Last year's 20th anniversary Pokemon Day celebrations included a Super Bowl commercial and a party with actress Drew Barrymore.

Amazing people complain about a free game with a free pokemon to catch for free is a money-grab.

Just release all DS Pokemon games to the 3DS virtual console. That means HG/SS, R/D/P, B/W, and B2/W2. Do that and make lots of money. Easy right?

Does advertising the mediocre Pokémon Go pay the bills or something GS?

You rarely comment on Pokémon Sun and Moon (the actual game worth playing) but every-time I check; Go has yet another article. And with the International Challenge February having such important prizes; you'd think an awareness article would be in order. . .

What gives_

@RSM-HQ: They're more likely to get article hits with Pokémon Go since it still has a larger player base even after losing so many people because it became repetitive and boring. It's playing the percentages.

@goblinchucker: Sun and Moon was the best selling retail games of 2016! Not mentioning Pokémon International Challenge February is very foolish of GS. But after the S/M review I can see why they are, they've been backing Go over S/M since Pokémon Gos release and are too stubborn to see which is the better game_

Pokémon Go did better than anyone expected (granted) but it's a free mobile app with microtransactions. Putting that ahead of the games that are not only better, but actually have longevity, is pretty stupid. It gets more difficult coming back to GS every time I tell you. Sheesh. .

@RSM-HQ: You're right, but that is beside the point. The point is that writing articles online is all about getting hits on those articles. GS has no reason at all to support any game because it's better or because it deserves it. They write articles to support specific games because it means more people will read those articles. If you only cared about how many people visit your article, and you have two games, are you likely to get more hits from the game that has an estimated 20 million current users (and 500 million downloads) or a game that has an estimated 10 million purchases? From the perspective of making money through writing articles, you always want to reach the most readers.

*(Sun/Moon data is a few weeks older, but should be accurate enough for my point)

P.S. @Seymour47 Yep, it is very easy and lazy. Which is why it makes sense if the end goal is all that I already discussed. Wouldn't you choose to make more money easily while providing what amounts to the same product? It's not like there is a matter of integrity between talking about one game over another, especially when they are part of the same franchise.

@goblinchucker: I believe you're giving Gamespot way too much credit. They only do articles with games they back. Even though D00M (4.1 million copies) was a success they didn't back the game with articles because they mocked the game itself continuously up-until release.

If it was a site like IGN that makes a better financial earning I'd understand your statistics, but here in GS they just put up articles of the games the staff play. And not what sells/ is always good.

Once upon a time I might have believed GS knew what they are doing; but in the past few years they've really let some key members go and made questionable decisions.

If it wasn't for the Forums I'd already close my account_

@RSM-HQ: This article has received twice as many comments in the past day as the news article about Pokemon Bank received in the past month. I'd love to see your analytics about how writing about S/M makes more sense because that's what people are interested in.

The people who are still playing S/M and give a crap about it are getting their news elsewhere. They are following the twitter and know when stuff happens immediately. They go to Serebii to get their deep dive information on breeding natures and effective team comp.

They may come here, but they're reading that headline and skipping over it because they already know that news. The rest of us are already done with that game or opted not to buy it, so the news doesn't apply to us. But a Pokemon Go article I'm sure brings in readers who are lapsed players on a regular basis.

@goblinchucker: You put far too much into a comment on a video game comment section about a crappy game.

@Seymour47: Sorry, does my thinking offend your delicate sensibilities? Do you find someone sharing their thoughts on a topic that interests them to be repulsive? Does analysis and logic being shared make you want to punch babies? I guess I should just do things that are easy and lazy.

@Seymour47: Nope. Just seems like quite a waste of your obviously sharp mind to be writing theses on Gamespot comment sections. And I'm not being sarcastic.

@Seymour47: Meh, like I said it's a topic that interests me. I like Pokémon, and I like gaming in general. I also enjoy being sarcastic, and I usually do things strictly to amuse myself. And it's a slow work day so I have time to do all of these things right now.
