Here's How Payments in Metal Gear Solid 5's Online PVP Mode Will Work [UPDATE 2]

How much MB Coins will cost will be revealed at a later date.

Updates to this story via comments from Konami have been made inline below. The headline has been changed to reflect conflicting reports between Konami's statement and the information available in-game.

[Update: Upon the game's release, new details have emerged regarding Metal Gear Solid 5's microtransactions model, and how they work.]

In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, players are able use various resources acquired within the game to facilitate the construction of an off-shore base. But in order to participate in the online, multiplayer Forward Operating Base (FOB) mode, where players attack each other's bases, they must first use currency, either in-game or real-world, to access that content.

No Caption Provided

An earlier version of this article stated that that content is only accessible through a pay wall, as shown via the in-game menu screen above from the final, retail version of the game. However, players will encounter the screen above -- which states "Spend MB Coins (paid service) to purchase waters -- if they attempt to access FOB content while offline (or while the servers are not online). Although you don't earn MB coins during normal, single-player gameplay, Konami has since explained how that content will be made available once the game's servers go live on September 1.

"To clarify, the initial FOB -- which includes the FOB command platform and all sub-platforms -- is not behind a Mother Base coin paywall. Maintaining other FOBs past the initial set of FOB platforms can be purchased with Mother Base coins. More information regarding the payment model for FOB will be provided closer to launch."

No Caption Provided

So, other menu options (which will only come up when online) will allow players to spend in-game resources to access FOB content.

Konami had also said previously that the FOB mode would be "fully accessible at launch and the microtransaction layer to that specific feature in the game primarily acts as an accelerator." And Konami producer Kenichiro Imaizumi has also taken to Twitter to clarify MB Coins, the currency driving the gameplay of the F.O.B. multiplayer mode, can be earned in ways other than paying real world money for them.

You can make money by completing missions on single campaign mode. There are other ways to make money as well. https://t.co/PAUP9mzOu4

— Ken-ichiro Imaizumi (@Ken1555) August 10, 2015

The Forward Operating Base PvP modes are separate from Metal Gear Online, which is a more expansive mutliplayer mode for the game. Konami initially said Metal Gear Online would launch alongside The Phantom Pain, but later said the competitive multiplayer mode would instead become available on October 6 on consoles and sometime in January 2016 on PC.

Konami has said Metal Gear Online won't cost anything extra. Although very little is known about it, previous details have revealed it will have a class system, while characters such as Venom Snake and Ocelot will make an appearance.

GameSpot's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain review awarded the game a 10. The review will be updated after the F.O.B. mode goes live on September 1.

Lol chill out guys.. Jesus

Your first FOB Base is totally free. If you wanna relocate your first initial Base or buy another Base THEN you must use MB coins. Yiu can buy them or get them free as daily log in rewards (not every day, check the log in reward list) personally I am sticking to one Base. Costs less to defend and I can stock up all troops/security defences on one Base.

Turns out this is BS.

So do I have to pay actual money for MB coins or not? Imaizumi said they can be earned in "other ways."

@Mitch0712: MB coins are only available through microtransactions with real world currency(you can not earn them in game), however, you can buy your first FOB with in game currency. This FOB is all you need to experience everything FOB's have to offer, the extra ones are for people who just want more FOB's- Robert Peeler via interview with The Codec

@Mitch0712: They are incorrect my friend, I heard it live on an interview with Robert Peeler (MGSV Community Manager) yesterday. You can buy your first FOB with in game currency, which is different from MB coins.

So, you paid 30 $ for the Demo, now you pay 60 $ for the Game, then you will pay unspecified amount (wouldn´t be surprised for it to be around 30 $) to access the MP part and then there is another MP component that will probably cost you something similar. And before you say that the mp component isn´t behind a paywall, just look at the words "Initial access is free" and do the math. So in total you will be paying in total around 120 + USD to experience all this game has to offer.

The fact that there is even a single person on the planet that bends over and takes it raw like this just makes me just confused.

It used to be that games would sell with a single player campaign, multiplayer, dedicated server and LAN capabilities. Now, they want you to put quarters in like its a slot machine at the casino.

@fyrant: Games also used to have really bad graphics (compared to today) and very few (and bad) voice acting. But I do agree, with that slot machine thing :(

Question is: who think in this kind of online multiplayer, Kojima or Konami? I bet both, but fanbots will say "its just Konami, Kojima is god"

Normally I think these little micro transactions are stupid, but for the most part unobtrusive (mostly and if handled well), but the way Konami has been going, I'm kinda skeptical as to whether they'll turn this into a disaster. Guess we'll have to wait a see.

Fine by me! I'll be more than happy to infiltrate and steal what other people paid real-world money on!

Everyone on here is crying like a little bitch but get over it, guys. This is a mode that's not even required to be played at all. Its optional. You're not missing out on anything to do with the single-player aspect, which is what MGS is all about anyways.

@Spartan-1657: Actually, that's exactly the thinking microtransaction laden games WANT. All MT games, have their mechanics deliberately re-tweaked to specifically favor purchasing freemium currency. Be it timers, walls, exaggerated gathering requirements, the core gameplay is altered from being a smooth, fluid process, to something meant to grate against EVERYONE who plays, EVEN if they never buy the freemium.

In essence, the game adds grind, to induce spending more money.

@Khasym: You're focusing on and acting like it's the whole game that is like that. It's not. It's an optional side-multiplayer mode. Its not the prime focus of the game. You do not even have to make FOB's for your entire playthrough if you don't want to.

My focus on this game, like all MGS titles, is the single player. That's what I'll be playing. That's what I am buying this game for. When I feel like infiltrating a base to steal some supplies, mercenaries, objects, etc, I'll have played the game long enough to have decent currency. This game is huge with many side-objectives. I'll be playing them anyway, regardless if this mode was even in the game so no, it won't feel like a grind.

I mean, people are acting like this is the primary mode in this game and that it's ruined because of this. That's not the case. Not even close. So ya, go ahead and add micro-transactions in this game. Make them REAL expensive too. It'll just make me that much more satisfied when I steal stuff the idiots spent real money toward getting. It'll make my experience even better!

@Spartan-1657: I'm not focusing on it. I've no intention of picking the game up until I get reviews from people who wait till AFTER the veil is dropped on MP and the truth is laid out. So focusing on it NOW, is pointless. I AM focusing on how people are trying to excuse or forgive this. I asked someone else, and I'll ask it here: Why is the $60 you're paying NOT worth a game free of microtransactions? What is it that other games can do, that TPP can't without MT's? Show me an actual BENEFIT gamer-side to including a microtransaction of any kind in a AAA game, and I'll cede the point.

What a shame, Even if you can earn money in game too. I'm sure it will be very little for each mission and take forever, So the much easier option will be to pay cash. And that is the way they like it.

I was going to pick up this instead of Max Mad first. But now i am going for Mad Max first and only. Just finished the pre-order, so glad i waited and did not pre-order MGS 5 a while ago like i was gonna lol.

No wonder Kojima left the company if he knew they were going to do this, He was probably strongly against this.

@chiffmonkey: i don't have any and i don't need one. I'm only interested in the game.

Kojima was an EMPLOYEE. Nothing more. Trying to imply that adding micro transactions into the game was the straw that broke the camel's back even though he agreed to release a $30 demo is just beyond moronic. MGS V is an outrageously expensive game(it cost as much as GTA V with nowhere near the same fanbase) and that's why they had to pull the Ground Zeroes stunt to try and make some money prior to the game release. After agreeing to that you people really believe he said: "No that's enough! If you guys put micro transactions in the game, i'm out!". Lmao, get fucking real.

As sad as it may be, employees get fired everyday for diverse reasons so unless you were a fly on the wall when that happened to Kojima, i think you lot should just stick to talking about stuff that you have real and reliable info about. Like the actual game.

And already it starts..before the game has been released...gtfo of here with your pickpocketing ways...apparently the game is a 10/10 so it is going to sell well (unless you paid people off) and make this studio A LOT of money. Stop with the microtransactions ffs.

Tired of micro-transactions in general and really hate them being in full $60 games. IF your multiplayer is going to be so amazing just sell it as a new thing altogether with no micro-transactions. Oh well, obviously nickle and dimming customers works out so well for the companies that do it.

Its all about money and companies are doing anything they can to make more of it. It would appear we are heading to the way of paying for the next chapter of games if you want to continue a story. MGS doesn't appear to be that way, but I do see a common trend coming. Not saying every company will adopt this model, but it wouldn't surprise me to see more and more companies releasing partial games for full price or maybe a little less and then charging for each additional chapter. Oh wait, Destiny already does this...........it's only the beginning my fellow gamers!
