Here's How Much Overwatch League Players Can Make Per Year

Careers, love!

Blizzard has revealed base salaries, benefits, and more details for players looking to sign with the Overwatch League for its first season.

Teams will be able to sign players to one-year contracts within the August 1 to October 30 signing window. The minimum salary for players is $50,000 per year.

In addition to a base salary, players will receive health insurance, retirement plans, housing for the season, and at least 50% of prize pool winnings (distributed among a team). The total bonuses in Season 1 will amount to $3.5 million, and at least $1 million of it will be awarded to the Season 1 champion team.

Addressing roster and team composition questions, Blizzard also clarified that teams can have between six and 12 players with no "region locking" on the basis of players' home countries or nationalities. You can find all the details on the Overwatch League website.

Blizzard recently revealed the owners of the first seven Overwatch League teams, which include big names in traditional sports. The Overwatch League is set to launch later in 2017.

So despite the idiocy of being, or wanting to be one of these league members, how minuscule is the number of paid players versus the world population of gamers even just playing Overwatch? You'd probably have a better chance of playing in the NFL, much, much fewer competitors for the job, than getting a gig playing Overwatch for a paltry $50,000. Not my idea of a successful career goal to pay the bills and become financially well off!

Please kids, strive to be much, much more than a gamer which is absolutely just meant to be a hobby in life among others!

@madgame23: They get paid a decent salary to play games that will hopefully secure them a decent future (Retirement plans / Healthcare Etc) ... that's a good thing .. what should their priorities be ? Doing drugs and sponging of the state ? I'd say their priorities are a lot better than some peoples !

@ltjohnnyrico: Simple answer, be more than a simple gamer! So many other and better real life goals and opportunities out there if you have the kind of attitude to actually work hard and be somebody respectable.

Sorry man but it's simply the truth about the majority of the world's view when somebody says they want to be a gamer for a profession. It's not a profession in the first place. It's simply a hobby.

@charlieholmes: Its only a hobby if you don't get paid for it ! if they can make money doing something they love doing .. why not ? and no ones going to mock them for getting 50k a year .. most likely people will be jealous ! If they are not just sitting around sponging of the state then I don't care what job they have .. and if they can get 50k a year for playing Games .. Fair play to them !

@iammcgruber: I'm not saying they are ... But why would a world be doomed (OP) for people having well paid jobs and contributing to taxes etc ? ... Surely it is the priorities of those that seek not to be employed and sponge of the state that should be more in question ?

@ltjohnnyrico: I don't know but I doubt he was speaking literally. Probably just making a joke that they play overwatch and make a minimum of 50k a year while ppl coming out of college with degrees are struggling to make 35k a year

I honestly hope this league fails. Overwatch makes a lot of fun at first, but due to its dumbed down shooting mechanics I lost interest very fast and its eSport is so boring to watch. Blizzard just throws their money at this game and hope they succeed. They have no legit concept for this.

"In addition to a base salary, players will receive health insurance, retirement plans"

Why mentioning that? Its illegal to employ someone without health insurance and retirement plan.

@ps3gamer1234: Yeesh. It's not like these people just party all day long until they play the game, then go back to their parties. Do you have any idea how long these guys practise together? And now with owners on their backs to worry about and responsibilities to deal with. Believe me, as someone who has worked on a game under a deadline, it stops being fun when you NEED to win.

@Xirtahm: I would not call a dude who sit in a chair and flip his thumbs a professional athlete, as a matter of fact a lot of those dudes are out of shape and would get out of breath if they walk for too long.

@yukushi: Let me educate you on reading comprehension. Not anywhere in my comment did I call a gamer an "athlete". I said they are people who are paid to play a game. Just like people who are paid in ad revenue and royalties for yelling at their cameras on YouTube.... or just smashing shit for no reason, like HowToBasic.

If people can get paid to do what they like, more power to them. No one is telling you that YOU can't do that.

@bjMassacre: "athlete" was clearly a wrong choice of words. But there a lot of professional people that do nothing but play games with bugger all physical activity, e.g. pro poker players, pro bridge players. pro chess, pro monopoly, pro scrabble players etc. Any field where there is competition and people willing to pay to watch (via tolerating advertising or buying tickets, ppv etc) or attract corporate sponsors, said competition will produce professional players. This is just as true for being paid because you're very good at hitting a ball over a net, into a net, or into a hole or because you twiddle your thumbs better than the average person.

@bjMassacre: If you want to draw that conclusion, that's your problem and not mine. Case in point, if someone getting paid to do what they like really pissed you guys off, you should really sit down and reevaluate your life's dilemmas.

@SprSynJn: Actually, I simply stated that the two get paid to play games. That is an undeniable fact. It isn't my fault he assumed I meant gamers are athletes.

Seriously, no one thinks that. Come on.

@Xirtahm: First off it doesn't piss me off that someone plays games for a living. One of my best friends makes his living off of twitch. Second, you are the one who is getting all bent out of shape over one person's response to what you said.
