Here's How Much Money Witcher 3 Dev Made in Last Three Months

"Good RPGs continue to sell for years."

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt studio CD Projekt Red parent company CD Projekt Group today reported earnings for the first quarter of 2016 (January 1-March 31). The results were strong, as continued sales of the celebrated RPG and its DLC helped boost the company's bottom line.

No Caption Provided

In terms of revenue, the company pulled in PLN 87 million ($22.5 million) for the three-month period, with PLN 32.6 million ($8.4 million) in profit. By comparison, CD Projekt reported only PLN 25.6 million ($6.6 million) in revenue for the same quarter last year, while the company had a loss of PLN 5.2 million ($1.34 million) during that quarter.

Note that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched in May 2015.

As you might have guessed, sales are being boosted this quarter in part by the huge success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (May 2015) and the Hearts of Stone expansion pack (October 2015).

Revenue attributable directly to CD Projekt Red the developer was PLN 68.1 million ($17.6 million), while the studio's profit was PLN 34.1 million ($8.8 million). This compares to PLN 6.6 million ($1.7 million) in revenue and a loss of PLN 4.8 million ($1.2 million) during the January-March period of 2015, when The Witcher 3 had not yet been released.

"Results achieved in the recent quarters prove that the release of The Witcher 3 was a quantum leap for us in terms of business activity," CD Projekt VP Piotr Nielubowicz said in a statement. "The first quarter of the current year is the third consecutive period of continuing strong sales of The Witcher, and of record-breaking revenues for the whole Capital Group."

"Good RPGs continue to sell for years and we know how to animate sales and pique gamers' interest," CD Projekt's Adam Kicinski added.

He went on to say that The Witcher 3's final expansion, Blood and Wine (May 31), is expected to be "very well received by gamers and gaming media alike," boosting sales further still.

You can read CD Projekt Red's full earnings report here [PDF].

No Caption Provided

CD Projekt Red will release a new game later this year. Interestingly, the unannounced title will be a "new type of video game format previously unexplored by the studio."

Looking beyond that, CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 is penciled in for launch in the 2017-2021 window, which is also when the developer plans to release another AAA RPG.

For more on the health of other video game companies, check out summaries of recent reports below. Check back soon for more, as Ubisoft will announce its latest earnings later today.

I remember playing this the month it released. Put about 40 hours into it before putting it down. Just couldn't hold my interest. There was a lot of terrible crap going on in my life at the time, particularly surrounding my family, and I'm not one of those people that can get lost in a game and forget about life.

Just recently picked it up again and I've already put in another 40 hours in less than a week! The greatness I wasn't able to see the first time around is very clearly evident. They've made tweaks to the game to make it more enjoyable, particularly with the UI. And they simply have the best writing I've ever seen in an RPG.

I hope they continue to do well financially, because it's obvious they have the talent to create unbelievable video games and I want them to continue to do so.

I'm incredibly sad that this is the last we'll see of Geralt, Triss, Yennifer, Ciri, and the rest of the crew. The problem with writing great characters in video games is that you never want to see them go for good.

I think I'm the only person who didn't really like this game all that much... I mean it has everything I like in a video game I just couldn't get into it. Gwent is pretty awesome though.

@goodgamesguy: I'll be your going to say you liked Uncharted 4 though right? Uncharted 4's game play doesn't hold a candle to The Witcher 3. 400hr game vs 12hr. Why didn't you like it? There is so much to do, create, fight, screw, you name it, its there in The Witcher 3..

@HellaStoned: Im not saying it doesnt. Im questions why he put "...how much witcher 3 DEV"....he made it seem like a certain dev put out his personal income on the internet. After clicking the article, it was actually talking about the whole studio, not a single dev.

@dj_bottom_nuts: It's common in gaming news to refer to the studio responsible for developing the game as "developer" since another company which is referred to as "publisher" takes the responsibility of publishing and distribution

They are like the only really great company out there doing AAA games. So what ever money they make its prob not enough for what they deserve.

I can't wait for Cyberpunk 2077 . I love Sci Fi a bit more than fantasy so I'm guessing that would be even better for me . it looks like Blade runner open world video game .

the combat could have been better . But i can't really think of a better way to tell a story in a video game. Overall definitely a masterpiece, hopefully an example to follow for other rpg's that think it's fine to have a million fetch-quests between cut-scenes and. I am really glad they're doing well and probably the best is yet to come from CD Projekt. xD

@handofkain: Wither 3 is definitely an improvement over 2 in terms of combat. Personally I really like the combat in both games, but I know it's the weak point for a lot of people. TW3 improves on many of the things that were lacking in TW2, like an actual dodge instead of just rolling, a better block/parry system, revised bomb and potion making systems to cut down on the need to hoard crafting materials, lots of little adjustments while still being quite similar to TW2.

So if you didn't like TW2 combat you probably wont like TW3 much more, but if you thought it was ok in TW2 you'll definitely feel that TW3 is better.

@Dilandau88: Yes. The Witcher 3 is Witcher 2 with better graphics, more repetitive quests, the most horrid inventory management you've ever used and a somewhat worse story. Its also longer which makes it more painful than Witcher 2.

@dlaney34: Actually inventory (and GUI in general) in TW3 is its weakest point in my opinion. It's really beyond me how devs could ignore such important stuff after horrible W2 interface.

@dlaney34: Mods are completely different story. I'm talking about fault of the developers, who can't design good interface or don't really care. I hope CDPR will hire great GUI designers.

It's heart-breaking to know that the last installment drops at the end of the month. Such a great series by a wildly-talented developer; it's bittersweet to see it go. I'm glad to hear that some point down the line (maybe 2022 or so?) that they may revisit it to make a Witcher 4.

As for Cyberpunk 2077, I know next to nothing about it; but simply on the merits and quality of the Witcher series, I will pre-order the Collector's edition the moment I am able to. It's the least I can do for a developer who made such a fantastic game. Enjoy the accolades CDPR, you thoroughly earned it.

Looking forward to W&B; here's to hoping for a very expanded Gwent addition; such an addictive game. I can't believe I ignored it on my first playthrough.

@andfx8: The second one is highly recommended as you take the character into the third and it is a really good game in itself. You can do it in about 25 hours and you won't regret it.

@andfx8: not to enjoy the game. BUT
the game is VERY VERY rich in lore from both books and 2 other games.

I'd say you would need to atleast do abit of research, to appreciate all the cool characters and how and why they are who they are. But you could still enjoy the game

@andfx8: I watched a YouTube 5 minute brief to catch myself up on things since I never played the first 2. I hardly felt lost at all playing. I was so immersed in the story, polish, questing system and straight up love put into the game, that rather than getting lost in the story, I got lost in how amazing the experience was. This game is a love letter to adventure RPG lovers everywhere. As a guy who normally just plays FPS like Halo and CSGO, trust me when I say.. GET THIS GAME

@andfx8: the combat quality is kind of contentious. Personally, I like it a lot. But many people compare it to Souls combat and get very upset that it isn't the same. One complaint I've read a lot is that it's "clunky" - IMO that's flat out wrong. He has momentum and inertia like a real person. And you have to incorporate that into your combat control. As someone who has studied martial arts since I was a child I find his lack of floaty, insta-change-directions movement refreshing. It's not Dynasty Warriors.

Also, the combat takes patience (at least on higher difficulty) - you have to be willing to circle your enemy and dodge and roll to create space in order to heal and prevent from getting flanked. If you just run forward and go "clicky clicky clicky clicky!" you'll get iced.

Whether you can get into this design or not I don't know - as I mentioned, there are some vocal folks on here who hate it. IMO most RPGs have either absurdly awkward or pathetically mindless combat, and I think this is at least above the average there.

My 2c

Great to hear CDPR is having success by making games, for the gamers, and not the shareholders. Even so, owning a little stock of their's isn't a bad idea.
