Here's 30 Minutes of Unreleased Xbox 360 GoldenEye Footage to Make You Sad

The game was reportedly canceled just a few months before its planned release.

What appears to have been a remastered version of Rare's acclaimed shooter GoldenEye 007 was at one time in the works for Xbox 360. It never came out, but now some footage of the scuttled project has emerged online.

The video, and this accompanying article, comes by way of the website Rare Thief. As you can see, it starts off with the game's iconic Dam mission, while Surface, Facility, Cradle, and Aztec are also on display. The graphics are noticeably better, while the music and sound effects are every bit as good as you remember. There are also some sequences that instantly jump between the original's graphics and this version, which would have been a feature in the game. You'll also notice the game runs at 60 FPS.

There is some multiplayer footage at the end, but only one person is playing.

According to Unseen64, GoldenEye for Xbox Live Arcade was in development at Rare in 2007 and 2008. Microsoft, Activision (the James Bond rights-holders), and Nintendo apparently agreed to a publishing deal. However, Nintendo Japan is purported to have shut the project down for unknown reasons just months before its planned release.

Similar to the original N64 GoldenEye, developers at Rare had their faces scanned into the Xbox 360 version for all manner of side-characters like enemies and civilians.

Though this project was not meant to be, Activision released GoldenEye: Reloaded in 2010 for the Wii. This wasn't exactly what fans might have wanted, however, as this reimagining of the classic featured Daniel Craig in the role played by Pierce Brosnan originally. The game was later released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Rare didn't get to release this game, but it did put out Perfect Dark on XBLA, a remastered version of its classic N64 game. The original was included with the 30-game Rare Replay pack, but GoldenEye wasn't.

Activision acquired the James Bond video game license in 2006. At the time, it was announced that the deal ran through 2014. A James Bond game from the makers of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood was released in 2015, though no new console or PC games have been announced.

They need to quit playing and release this!! Multi Play on Xbox live would be sick! Unless
you played this game when it first released, you will never know how special this game is.

I seen this yesterday at some site. the aiming part just feel like perfect dark xbla version, with makes it difficult to snipe the enemies in one of the mission on perfect dark without auto aim on, it doesn't move like any other fps games after the n64 first person shooter games or the current ones now.

I never understood how this game was considered even remotely good. Even more so, how can it be of ANY interest to any modern gamer.

@Ripper_TV: I remember it feeling really good when it came out. Played it a few years ago, though. Didn't age so well.

This NEEDS to be the way they remaster the Crash games. Same feel and level design under the hood with sharp new textures.

Looks more like a PS2 version. This may be related to the unfinished state of the project, of course.

I'm actually a bit confused as to who owns Goldeneye 64? I thought that Nintendo still owned the rights, hence it's not being on Rare Replay?

Not so tragic, "GoldenEye 007: Reloaded" was a gift to us old-timers to let us replay our memories with better graphics, optimization , more modern FPS standards though not 100%, & even includes decent bots for single player verses :-) I just wish MS would put "Reloaded" on 360 Backward Compatibility now :-P

@blitxxx1981: Pretty tragic since ya know they aren't the same game. A "new" 007 game doesn't make up for the cancelled Goldeneye HD remake. This is literally taken from the second paragraph of Gamespot's review "GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is entirely different from the Nintendo 64 version"

AKA not what fans of the original wanted.

Ah c'mon. I loved Goldeneye, in fact I bought an N64 just for it. But by today's standards it is tragic. The rose tinted spectacles wear off when you actually play the games again, some things are best left as a beautiful memory.

@mattcake: I usually say the same about such including Dark Forces(Which I love), but honestly the gameplay of this game today still is incredibly fun to me. Maybe it is just me, but every shot fired feels satisfying and your target reacting so strongly to each hit. Of course it lacks in areas compared to more modern games, but this games gameplay is still entertaining nostalgia or not.

@mattcake: I would have 100% purchased the HD remake had it been released on LIVE arcade. I purchased and played through the HD remake of Perfect Dark years and years after release and it's still a fun game. Besides we've gotten HD remakes for just about every other game that's come out in the last 20 years.
