Now Playing: Here Is When God Of War PS4 Pre-Loading Begins; Unlock Time Confirmed - GS News Update

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

PS4's highly anticipated God of War is only a few days away, with pre-loading even closer. Sony Santa Monica's reboot of the long-running action series releases on Friday, April 20, though some players will have a chance to play it a little before then depending on where you live.

If you're planning on picking the title up digitally, God of War will be available from the PlayStation Store right at 12 AM ET on April 20, meaning PS4 owners on the West Coast can start playing it at 9 PM PT on April 19. The Europe and Australia PlayStation Stores also list the game for April 19, although neither says the exact time that it will be available those regions yet. On PSN in the US, Sony says that pre-loading begins at some point on Tuesday, April 17.

Ahead of its release, you're still able to pre-order God of War digitally, which will get you a handful of bonus items. The standard edition comes with several God of War avatars that will be available immediately upon purchase. The game also comes in a Digital Deluxe edition, which contains an assortment of exclusive content, such as special armor and shield skins. You can see all of the bonus items in our God of War pre-order guide.

God of War is the first new installment in the series since 2013's God of War Ascension for PS3. Unlike previous titles, the upcoming PS4 entry focuses on the story of Kratos and his son, Atreus. The game diverges from its predecessors in a number of other notable ways, drawing on Norse mythology as opposed to Greek and arming Kratos with the new Leviathan Axe.

Critics have had very good things to say about the new God of War. GameSpot's Peter Brown awarded it a 9/10 in our God of War review and called it "a spectacular action game with epic set pieces." He wrote, "Like Kratos, God of War recalls the past while acknowledging the need to improve. Everything new it does is for the better, and everything it holds onto benefits as a result. Kratos is no longer a predictable brute. God of War is no longer an old-fashioned action series. With this reboot, it confidently walks a new path that will hopefully lead to more exciting adventures to come."

I wish you could use the 20% off coupons from Sony towards digital preorders. Since you can't, I will wait until it releases to purchase it for $48. This is not a game I will sell, or rush through, so I'm fine buying digital. I am thrilled I have not heard about a multiplayer component. I haven't read too much about it to avoid spoilers, so maybe I just missed it, but Corey Barlog will get a huge chunk of loyalty from me if that's indeed the case (because you know without a doubt he was pressed to incorporate some sort of multiplayer for microtransactions or map pack DLC sake).

I live in NY and when I pre ordered the Digital Deluxe last week, it said available on the 18th. I assumed that meant pre-loading. Maybe they added another day to make sure everyone can download it in time without straining their servers, lol.

I was going to get digital to play early but I have besy buy gamers unlocked so I just went with that version. I'll probably play it Friday Night instead of Thursday night like I originally planned. 47.99 is okay with me for a good game.

Unfortunately, you CANNOT pre-order the Collector's Edition through digital download, so I will be in line the night before grabbing mines at 9pm pst time.

I haven't been this excited since the God of War III Collector's Edition on PS3. Really looking forward to unboxing that CE.

Anyone know how long it takes Redbox to get new releases?

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

@freeryu: The Redbox site says it's coming on April 20th. Not a bad deal for $3/day if you binge play it. I'm getting it from Amazon Prime for $45 and will probably sell at a local game store in a month for $30 cash. The story is 30-35 hours according to reviews. I know you're trolling but hey, it's better then the overused "I'll play it on YouTube" line. Lol

@joshrmeyer: True. While I've done that on occasion (Uncharted: Lost Legacy), there are some games I just want in my collection. This is one of them. Metal Gear, is another.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

@mwewerka: For sure. I might keep it... Depends on if it seems like something I might replay or not. I bought uncharted 4 for $30 from a friend, played it, beat it, sold it to that store for $28 cash. Figured I can always rebuy it.

@joshrmeyer: No I'm being completely for real there's a redbox like 2 minutes from my barracks. Better to spend like $20 then beat it and never touch it again.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

@freeryu: Ah ok. Well cool... Yeah it's a good option then.
