Now Playing: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Stealth, Combat and Puzzles

Although Battlefield 1 led the way with the most nominations, it's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that's walked away with the top prize from the E3 2016 Game Critics Awards.

The awards, which are decided upon by members of 40 different media outlets (including GameSpot), saw Breath of the Wild win three awards: Best of Show, Best Console Game, and Best Action/Adventure Game. Civilization VI was the only game to win more than one award, being named Best PC Game and Best Strategy Game.

In terms of publishers, Nintendo and Sony led the way with three wins each; Sony's success came thanks to Horizon: Zero Dawn, PlayStation VR, and God of War.

You can see the full list of winners below, as well as a breakdown of wins by publisher and platform. You can also check out the list of all the nominees here.

@lostn: Actually it was great from the people that actually played it. Also that wasn't the only thing they played. Edit: The only part of FFXV they played. It's a wonder what actually playing a game entails about it. Whouda thunk?

Interesting that GOW was even nominated since all they had was a video. :/

Inside actually came out. And I bought it. and beat it. and nominate it GOTY.

half this list is 2017 or later. ugh.

@troll_elite: Troll smarter; Not harder. oh, and go have a look at current sales number. 3DS is the second most sold consoles week after week, beating the X1 by almost a +100% factor. How much of a success is a console that can'T even compete with an outdated handheld??

@heqteur: Well, let me try to phrase this as simply as possible so you can understand. The 3DS has no real competition since Sony abandoned the Vita, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that it's selling relatively well in market it effectively has a monopoly on. Also, the NX is not the 3DS. It might have a mobile component similar to the 3DS, but it's going to be a home console system (think Wii U, X1, and PS4 if you're struggling to imagine what that looks like).

Sigh....I hope Zelda will actually be great and not simply have critics give it 10's merely because they can't get the nostalgia out of their eyes and focus on the actual game......for reference see MGSV....the Reviewers of this game should be younger people who don't remeber how cutting edge Zelda was back in the 80's and 90's.....hell FF7 was the best game I had ever played for a few years....but every game since has been horribly derivative....Japanese devs, imo, stopped making good games 10 years ago....I have prayers for Zelda, but not much hope (for reference see the gameplay trailers for FF15)....smh.

@Daelusca: The fact that you disagree with a general concensus doesn't mean everyone in the whole world liked MGSV out of nostalgia. Remove those hater glasses. They're blinding you out miserably.

@heqteur: Tough to have hater's glasses when I had no opinion when playing MGSV on day 1....anyone who thinks this game, as a whole was very good, simply doesn't share my gaming style....and, imo, either really, really loves stealth game play, or is a committed fanboy who is blinded by nostalgia....period...I can't think of any other alternatives.

The stealth gameplay in MGSV was some of the best I have ever played...really topnotch, and if that was the only reason I played games or my foremost enjoyment, I could possibly have seen my way to give this game a really, high rating.

That said, that is where the excellence ends; imo, that is where anything positive about this game ends.

The story is ridiculous, the only interesting character in the entire game is Quiet and, in typical Japanese style, they dressed her like she was a porn character...idiotic is being generous.

There were, what, 52 main missions? Of which, the first 30 something had slight variations, stealth here, stealth there for, well, no real reason that furthered the "plot"; but that slight variation was preferable to the last 16 "missions" which were the exact same missions previously completed....yes, the EXACT SAME MISSIONS. What reasonable game would do that crud?BTW, that's a rhetorical question.

Then we have 150 some side ops which were almost literally the same.....go to the same "town" for the 10th time and kill someone/ steal something....and "town" meant a 3 hut village for the most part.....in the first few hours I had been to the same 3 hut village 4 times....on the helicopter, fly to the village, kill/ steal, back on the helicopter, back to motherbase, rinse and repeat.....I get it that most sidequests can become repetitive and annoying but this game perfected that feeling.

As to motherbase....smfh.

And the pinnacle for this mess....after EVERY one of the exact same missions...CREDITS ROLLED....like each 15 minute experience was a movie....amateur hour made solely for fanboys.

This years E3 sucked. I was let down big time. Last years E3, the announcements of interesting games were incoming rapidly. This year, I feel like 2017 is gonna be a slower year being as all I really have to look forward to are all the Final Fantasy games, Kojima game, God of War and Mass Effect. There are several others but I cant help but feel a lil disappointed at the lack of huge name games. Think VR has been way too much of a focus for developers.

@heqteur: nope this is the 1st E3 I can say I "have been let down" and thanks for stating the obvious. I AM WELL AWARE that E3 isn't made for me. But I should be able to say that I was let down by the lineup of games shown without someone making some smart remark. So, plz next time keep ya smart a** comments to ya self cuz that was completely unnecessary.

@Yams1980: PC gaming is actually saving the industry. The best reviewed games are mostly indie, the largest communities of games are on PC, how many games have been saved by modders is too many to count, there are numerous strategy titles that have sold 1/2 million copies this year without any coverage from sites like G, etc, etc. I don't have any horse in this so called console high school slap fest, but all I know is if it wasn't for PC, this would no longer be a hobby for me.

@Tiwill44: I wouldn't call it a win for Nintendo as a whole as much as a win for the Zelda team. Every still knows Nintendo didn't actually do that well.

I will say that Zelda BoTW could very well be the shot Nintendo needs to get the NX rolling.

@me3639: Proves you know absolutely nothing about the game. Please enlighten us with how many games like Zelda can put every eye on the industry on it? Hell, when Skyward Sword released one photo of concept art, it was huge news. No franchise, period, has the track record Zelda has. Lot's of games when "nerds were kids" did not age well over time or survive new consoles. Zelda keeps doing that, and doing it damn well. Do you know how many of your beloved games "stole" ideas like crafting, cooking and survival from old games? Do you even know what DOS is?

@sonic_spark: Uh oh ran into an Nintendo cultist who thinks without Nintendo video games wouldn't exsists. Maybe if they would have released another bowling sim they would be relevant but my previous statement is true. Outside the N cult, no one cares. Let me do a poll on PC, does anyone care, 95% says no. Thanks for playing but its ok it will win game of the year for copying every game that has been released in the west the last 5 years but yet every reviewer hates survival sims. Funny.

@me3639: Made up numbers, and an opinion that really makes no sense =/= truth. What survival sims are you referring to that "reviewers hate"? You're not even making sense. Maybe those games weren't good? Did you ever think of that? And a Nintendo cultist? Please. I enjoy my Nintendo games, absolutely, but I also own a PS3, a 360, and X1, and hopefully soon - depending on what the Neo is, I'll get a PS4. You know nothing about the game aside from the fact there was some light "crafting". So let me get this straight, for one aspect of a multi-faceted game, you're saying Nintendo copied every western game in the last 5 years? Are you that dense? Listen junior, the original Legend of Zelda was open world, tackle the game in the order you please. That was in 1986. So tell me more about how Nintendo copied every gaming trope in the last 5 years?

zelda looks good and all, but it is something we could have been playing 5 years ago... it doesn't break new ground for games, it only breaks new ground for the zelda franchise (which is as dated as anything else nintendo-related). i would give it the award for most overhyped game of e3 to be honest. that being said, i do want to play it and see if it lives up to expectations.

i believe horizon (again) and god of war stole the show. one of the most overlooked games that only got screen time during interviews outside of the conference is gravity rush 2. it looks incredible... the gravity defying mechanics of the first game are still impressive even today. cuphead also deserves some more attention strictly due to its art design. there has never been anything else like it and that says something.

@Xristophoros:

ITP: Talks about how Zelda didn't do anything new, list two games that don't do anything new and we could have been playing 5 years ago...

Horizon is probably the true GoTY for 2017 though, I think if they fix the monologue in it(no denying it was excessive) they will have a real winner. There's a reason its trailer failed to gain half the attention it did last year... Also the biggest thing that helped Zelda was the fact that they had more than just a trailer, they had a demo..

GoW has one massive problem, they are trying to redeem the series after dragging the narrative part through the mud with 2/3. They want people to take the story serious but they've already chased that crowd away from the game by focusing on appealing to the people who just want brutality.

@Sepewrath: zelda simply took elements from a myriad of other games and mashed them all together... climbing mechanics from assassins creed (except way more basic), crafting as seen in hundreds of other games, but more specifically, jrpg's such as ni no kuni, the sound mechanic (which i find to be very gimmicky for a zelda game since it is not real stealth), was seen in mgs 3... then you have the platforms that you can move around which reminds me of trine... does not fit a zelda game at all. i expect them to create a bunch on convoluted puzzles with that mechanic.

@Xristophoros: Few things; first, Zelda had the magnetic gloves, which were used to manipulate the environment and move Link around dating back to Zelda on GBC--pretty sure that came out before Trine. Second, in AC, climbing is just like walking, Zelda had that since OoT. But the climbing in here is as much of a puzzle mechanic as using an item. Yeah cooking has been around a long time and definitely cannot be attributed to Ni No Kuni. People love that word gimmick, using it so incorrectly. How is a mechanic gimmicky? That's like saying the ability to sprint in a game is a gimmick.

But most importantly, even if Zelda did just lift these ideas from other games, which most games lift their ideas from other games. Those games you mentioned all have that one defining feature. That's why you mentioned them. None of them have cohesively tied together all these mechanics and applied them to an open world, that also embraces the Zelda formula. That is what is special about this game to people.
