Helldivers 2 Developer In "Crisis Mode" Working On Fixes For Launch Issues

Performance problems and matchmaking issues are plaguing the Sony-published co-op shooter.

Helldivers 2 is off to a strong start following its launch on PC and PlayStation 5, but the game's popularity is also causing a variety of issues that has Swedish developer Arrowhead Game Studios in "crisis mode."

The good news is a fix addressing the most serious of the issues seems to be on its way. Helldivers 2 game director Mikael Eriksson said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that a patch improving matchmaking and the "most frequent" crashing issues on PC is being tested, and if successful, will soon be rolled out as a hotfix to PC players on Steam before coming to PS5.

In a post on the game's official Discord, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt said the studio is working hard to address matchmaking bugs, performance problems, crashes on PC, and other issues that have resulted from the launch of the Sony published third-person co-op shooter.

"I just wanted to let you all know we're working as hard as we can on resolving these, the volume of players exposed some shenanigans in the system that went past many, many, many hours of testing," Pilestedt said.

For the time being, Pilestedt recommended players group up with friends and avoid using the game's currently broken quick play matchmaking, as joining friends is working as intended.

Helldivers 2 is currently sitting at an average user review score of "Mixed" on Steam, with many players citing the aforementioned problems as the reason for their negative review. Despite those problems, the game is as of writing the number-one-selling game on Steam by revenue, and reached a concurrent player peak of more than 64,000 players on PC shortly after launch, according to SteamDB.

In our recent Helldivers 2 preview, we said the Starship Troopers-inspired shooter has the potential to be a great co-op game and enjoyed the chaotic fun it provided, but questioned its staying power given there are already a plethora of live-service shooters on the market. Arrowhead confirmed ahead of launch via a PlayStation Blog post that Helldivers 2 will receive free post-launch content updates that will see the universe of the game "grow and change" while offering new tools, challenges, and threats for players to overcome.
