Now Playing: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Coming To VR, And You Could Already Own It - GS News Update

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has already gotten a fair bit of attention as a sleeper hit from 2017, and soon players will be able to experience it in a whole new way. Developer Ninja Theory is releasing a VR Edition on Steam for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on July 31. Best of all, if you already own the game on Steam, or if you purchase it anytime in the future, you'll get the VR edition for free.

The VR edition includes the full original game along with customizable comfort options and "additional experimental game modes," according to the announcement. In a development diary (below) the studio talks about how it addressed problems of camera movement and getting the frame rate properly smooth for VR.

Hellblade won the most awards of the 2017 BAFTA Games Awards with five in all. Those included Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Best British Game, Game Beyond Entertainment, and Best Performer.

GameSpot's Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice review praised its satisfying combat and an inventive story that tackled the complex issue of mental illness. It also earned a spot on our Games of the Year 2017. The studio followed through on its themes itself, by donating to mental health charities.

I couldn't handle this in VR lol. Could barely handle it on console.

Awesome gesture by the developers. They did it purely because they thought it was cool, not for any financial gain, and are giving it away for free.

Seems like a bit of a sly back hand to those who bought it on PS4 & own a PSVR having contributed to them gaining enough sales so they could sell out to Microsoft. I do wonder how many employees agreed with the take over considering all the bluster they were spouting after Hellblades launch and championing "independent AAA development" on a budget.

@gamingdevil800: at the end of the day, they have families to feed. Feel free to risk going out of business when you start a company out of "loyalty".

@Myron117: At least it wasn't an EA buy out lol.

@gamingdevil800: According to the video, they've been optimising this for the past 2 years to achieve native 90fps. Trying to achieve that with PS4 hardware doesn't sound as feasible. They may add it later, who knows.

@gamingdevil800: maybe psvr update is next?

Avatar image for gamingdevil800

@siarhei: They said no on their twitter. I'm not sure if Hellblade even got the promised HDR update for PS4? I just hope Ninja Theory don't regret this 5 or 6 years down the line when they launch their next game on the windows store 🤮 instead of steam.

@gamingdevil800: The HDR update released just the other day.

@gamingdevil800: They won't, Ninja Theory will be fine.

@nativepixel: I just hate running games off the windows store haha. Always seem to encounter problems with it no one has an answer to.
