Head Spinning Comes Back
New device hopes to free up gamers' hands and put the movement back in their heads.
Italy-based Union Reality has shipped its head-spinning UR Gear in the US. The helmet-like device is equipped with three infrared transmitters that register a player's head movements to a small box that rests on top of the player's monitor. A handheld controller is also included with the device, or gamers can use a standard joystick with the device through Double Device Technology.
So is this just another gadget we'll all toss out in a few months? Well, developers are already lining up support for the technology. Activision has pledged support in Heavy Gear II and Interstate 82, and titles like Battlezone, Forsaken, Freespace, G Police, Hexen II, Heavy Gear, Incoming, I War, Jedi Knight, Longbow 2, Quake 2, Sub Culture, and Ultim@te Race Pro are already supported. The UR Gear is available at Babbage's, Electronics Boutique, Egghead Software Online, Fry's Electronics, Siberian Outpost, and Software Etc. for US$99.00.
