HD God of War I & II due this holiday

Remastered versions of Kratos' PS2 adventures being rereleased later this year on single $40 Blu-ray; will feature 1280x720p graphics running at 60fps, added PSN Trophies

Even though its new $299 slim model has drawn praise from cash-strapped consumers, the PlayStation 3's lack of backward compatibility remains a contentious issue. Today, though, Sony announced that two of the most popular PlayStation 2 games will be playable on its younger sibling, courtesy of a Blu-ray rerelease of God of War and God of War II.

Kratos will soon vent his fury in hi-def.
Kratos will soon vent his fury in hi-def.

Due this holiday for $39.99, the God of War Collection will feature both fantasy-action titles, which were developed at Sony's Santa Monica studio. The games' critically praised graphics will receive a high-definition upgrade, running in anti-aliased 1280x720 resolution at 60 frames per second. The remastering is being handled by Bluepoint Games, the Austin, Texas-based developer behind Blast Factor, and will add PlayStation Network Trophies to both games.

(Warning: Reviews below contain spoilers.)

Released in 2005 to stellar reviews, God of War tells the tale of Kratos, a rugged Spartan with a grudge the size of Mount Olympus against Ares, the titular god of war. To take down the renegade deity, players must kill all manner of foes out of the Greek mythological pantheon, including minotaurs, cyclopes, and harpies. The 2007 sequel, which received similar critical hosannas, saw more supernatural slaughter, with Kratos taking on Zeus and other deities from Mount Olympus.

God of War and God of War II were followed by the PSP prequel God of War: Chains of Olympus in 2008. God of War III is set for release in March 2010 and was a central draw at Sony's E3 2009 press briefing in June.

If this is successful I can see Sony pushing for more HD updates of PS2 classics. MGS Collection, Final Fantasy Collection etc.

@Sendmn23 Actually, it's not a rip off. maybe YOU don't want to pay to get those games again. You know what, then Don't! People that still have the GoW games but don't have a ps2, and their ps3's dont have b/c they've been dying for this. For all we know, they could have been planning this as early as 2007. And, what about the people that have always wanted to play them that have a ps3. Why should they go out, spend $100 to get a ps2, and another $30-$40 to get the two games. Does THAT make sense to you? Did you ever think of that? Well this CUSTOMER/GAMER thinks god of war blu ray is a smart idea. (Take this in mind, all ps3's do NOT have b/c)

I own the first God of War, so I'll won't be re-buying the enhanced version of that copy, but I don't have God of War 2, so I'll have to check that one out for sure.

@Valen_Ca I don't see why people don't understand this. The reason Sony doesn't add PS2 backwards compatibility anymore is because they are still selling the PS2. Is the original Xbox still selling? No. Is the Gamecube still selling? No. Case closed.

@ freonterror really you like paying for yester years left overs.... you like paying for products that we've all bought before, AGAIN. when we can have it for free with "backwards compatibility"... you like Sony selling you the same old game with a fresh new spray of clear coat? c'mon dude this is what sony is looking for...suckers! If this God of war blu ray p2 games are successful do you actually think sony is going to release a "bc' update for the ps3? Why would they do that when they could just milk all the unsuspecting customers like you. I own every God of war thats ever come out... psp included, but I'm not going to be duped into buying these games again no matter how great they are. If Sony is going to be like this maybe we should just send them donations.... because this CUSTOMER/GAMER thinks this god of war blu ray is a rip off!

"A PC port of this collection would be absolutely awesome." I disagree. God of War should stay a PS exclusive. For the sake of the systems.

well GOW3 was enough to persuade me to get a PS3 but including GOW1&2 for less than normal price of ps3 game making for the whole trilogy $100 is not that bad!

If that is their reason benjy117 then that is a major cop-out on Sonys part. Take a look at the Xbox 360, there is no part of the original Xbox in it and yet Microsoft has managed to provide some backward compatibility for that console and if the Cell and RSX are really as powerful as Sony would lead you to believe then it should be fairly simple for Sony to figure out software emulation for the PS2, after all, it does it with the PS1 without issue.

They can't do the backwards capabilities because of the cell processor. The older console packed both chips, which made it more expensive. It's easier for developers to throw it on blu-ray instead. I admit it now. MS may have some competition finally with the price drop and 45nm fabrication.

i think metroid prime trilogy is a better deal, although the complete remastering in hd and all is pretty sweet. its great for those who never got to play the games and dont own a ps2. i think sony took a tip from the big N on rereleasing updated games. i wouldn't be surprised if M$ did this eventually too with some of its bigger titles such as Fable and Halo. on one hand i like this trend for a few reasons. 1. it gives those who never played the games a chance to do so 2. the updated features may breath new life into games for those of us who have played them, esp on the wii w/ new controls. but i don't like it because it's sort of just milking our money again, but hey, if theres still money to be made off a game, i guess it's a good thing they at least give it an update for us, eh? and come to think of it, Ninty did this on gcube too...think about those releases of OoT and master quest and MM and all those discs, with crisper, brighter graphics and progressive scan support?

I hope they do something similar for Ico and Shadow of the Colossus as The Last Guardian draws near. Shadow of the Colossus especially in HD would be mindblowing, pure and simple.

@ ChargEd, no, the fact that the PS2 is still a sales powerhouse all by itself is why they don't want to support BC. The expense of remastering a pair of games and rereleasing them for $40 is not a particularly compelling value proposition for Sony compared to that.

Beautiful. @ositoPERU God of War 3 is going to be the final game chronologically, but Sony Santa Monica has not dismissed the possibility of more prequels, spin-offs or games between other games. So in other words, no, this is not the last we'll see of Kratos.

thank you Sony for bringing GoW 1 & 2 to HD... it would be even better if you could somehow throw Chains of Olympus into the deal, so we'll have the "true" or complete Collection... though I really hope that GoW 3 won't be the end of the series! :-)

Terrific, maybe we will see a trend. I rather spend $40.00 on two 720p enhanced classics than $100.00 for a ps2 and another like $35 for the ps2 equivalents at 480p. News like this makes me happy.

The God of War series is a classic but I would have really given Sony the thumbs up if the new slim had been backward compatible. That would have been one sweet console and the key to higher sales by far.

@ HipnotiKal These games are made by SCEA ( Sony Computer Entertainment America ) ! Do you honestly expect that a game made by Sony to be ported to another console?
