Halo Wars 2 Release Date Nearing as Game Goes Gold

Microsoft's RTS sequel has crossed a major development milestone.

Microsoft and Total War developer Creative Assembly have finished development on Halo Wars 2, meaning the RTS has gone gold, 343 Industries boss Dan Ayoub announced on Twitter.

Not pictured is the team at Creative Assembly. According to Ayoub, this "kick-ass" team has been Microsoft's partner and "deserve[s] a ton of credit; been side by side since the start."

Halo Wars 2 launches on February 21 for Xbox One and PC, though people who buy the $80 Ultimate Edition can start playing on February 17. It is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so buying it digitally on one platform gets you access to the other for free. All progress, including saves and achievements, are available on each platform.

In other news, an open beta for Halo Wars 2 launches on January 20. Additionally, Microsoft announced a partnership with THQ Nordic to release a disc-based physical version of the game at retail.
