Halo Wars 2 Open Beta Begins, Here's How to Get In

Get a crack at Microsoft's RTS sequel right now on Xbox One or PC.

Right on schedule, the open beta for Halo Wars 2 has begun.

Xbox One and PC players can download it on their platform right now or through these Xbox.com links: Xbox One, PC. The file size is 10.1 GB on Xbox One and 11.96 GB on PC.

Unlike the first Halo Wars 2 beta from June 2016, this second one lets you try the card-based mode, Blitz. You build a deck and then deploy units in an attempt to capture and hold control points to score points. There are 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 options, and the beta supports matchmaking.

Progress from the Halo Wars 2 Blitz beta does not carry forward to the full game, but you can earn two card packs, one for logging in and the second for completing your first match (win or lose).

Watch the video above and read this in-depth blog post from 343 to get an incredibly detailed breakdown of how Blitz works. The beta runs until January 30.

Halo Wars 2 launches in full on February 21, though people who buy the $80 Ultimate Edition can start playing on February 17. It is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so buying it digitally on one platform gets you access to the other for free. All progress, including saves and achievements, is available on each platform.

What's halo wars like? I can't see a rts built for console being particularly impressive. Could be wrong.

Doesn't even appear in the Windows Store so you wouldn't know a beta was on even if you search for it , load of bollocks , the link in the article works at least, come on Microsoft get it together , EA did.

Wish they'd have just standard 3v3 in the beta so ppl could get a traditional feel for the game before hand

@iammcgruber: Ahh... is the game balancing towards 3v3 format? I always saw RTS as primarily 1v1 games, but I'm not familiar with what the first Halo Wars was like. If that's the case, that'd be pretty cool, 'cause I'm terrible and I usually like to group with more skilled friends to carry me to victory.

@rickjamesia: the first was fairly balanced with I'd say covenant maybe having a slight edge in some instances. But I just love epic large scale battles and coordinating armies with others but I also play 1v1s

Played this last night for a bit... The new game mode is fun! VERY fast-paced, whether 1v1 or 2v2...

In terms of "deck micros", it feels right. Take the solid payouts of Halo5, and combine that with the card-leveling of GOW4 Horde (not the rest of GOW4's horrible fkn payouts, fake crafting, & exp leveling). It works.

@sladakrobot: Yeah, lol... Dynasty Warriors is fun though. Mostly dumb fun, but still fun. (I mean I haven't played since like... DW3 or something, but I'd play it again if a friend wanted to).
