Microsoft's Halo series, one of the company's crown jewels, has reached a new sales milestone. The sci-fi shooter series, which debuted in 2001 on Xbox with Halo: Combat Evolved, has now sold more than 65 million units, Microsoft announced.

This is up from 60 million Halo titles sold worldwide in October 2014.

Helping to push Halo to its new sales milestone was in all likelihood November 2014's Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Microsoft has not announced a specific sales figure for this game, but it's likely that it continues to move units, as it's now featured in Xbox One system bundles.

The Halo series continues this October with Halo 5: Guardians. Looking beyond that, Xbox boss Bonnie Ross recently said that there are still "hundreds" of stories from the Halo universe to be told.

For a closer look at Halo 5, including its Warzone mode, check out the video above.

At Comic-Con last week, developer 343 Industries responded to concerns about the fact that the $250 Halo 5 Limited Collector's Edition does not come with a physical disc. The developer also warned fans not to rush through the game's campaign and discussed Halo 5's length and 60fps frame rate.

@lim30041982: Actually you can't really compare the numbers ... The Halo series is basically on one platform while the GTA is on multiple platforms. Personally speaking GTA is such a bore.

65 million... Blimey... For a franchise that's just over 10 years old that's rather impressive.. Averaging around 5 million adopters a year! Number will only rise come Winter 2015

When your running in third place in most countries, you try to make yourself feel good by jumping on chairs beating your chest to tell the world all about your past success.

@Moonco: When you are a non-contributing zero like yourself, you like to make statements like the one above. Anyways congratulations MS for having an incredible franchise.

@Spid3r6: It used to be an incredible franchise.

I don't consider anything after reach as a real halo game anymore.

I've never had an xbox so I haven't ever played Halo. However, for any franchise to sell 65 mil is incredible.

Can anyone that has played both the Halo and MGS franchises explain to me how good Halo is compared to MGS? I know they are totally different, but just generally.

@elmdreamer: Halo is as self serious as MGS is dumb. For every time MGS stops you for a 10 or 20 minute diatribe about some ridiculous bull****, Halo shows you a pastel alien thing or place named The [generic noun/adjective]. Halo's controls are as simple and easy to use as MGS's controls are goddamn retarded. Halo's gameplay is as refined and predictable as MGS's gameplay is innovative and clunky. MGS focuses on the minutia to an insane, possibly idiotic degree, while Halo will never ever surprise you with what it lets you do.

Halo is an ice cold thimble of a solid name brand beer, MGS is a bathtub of some dingbat's crazy craft brew served 4 and half degrees below room temperature.

@elmdreamer: Do yourself a favor and by and Xbox One along with Halo MCC. Go through the campaign once from Halo 1 through 4 and I can guarantee you by the end of 1 you will be hooked and will be waiting to play Halo 5. Its amazing that you can play all of them together under one hub and you don't have to wait years for the next one to come out.

@thetruth239: It's Halo it's a great game for gamers who BUY GAMES! The outspoken internet might complain and cry about it but there is a reason it sells. It'a a great game with great narrative and gameplay.

@lrdfancypants: They tried, but MS funked it up. They tried to play hardball with Universal and Fox, but they never expected the two studios to collude for a favourable offer. When MS realized they couldn't screw Hollywood, they pulled out.

@lrdfancypants: video game movies having a poor track record means studios aren't willing to give a Halo movie the massive budget it would need

True but you'd think halo would be different because it has stuff outside video games to draw from like novels and such.

@lrdfancypants: Microsoft understand the difficulty in making a successful movie and don't want to waste there first chance only to fail like most game narratives that transition to movies. They want to fully capitalize on a Halo movie success.
