Halo movie indefinitely postponed

Following collapse of studio backing and a proposed third rewrite, work on big-screen adaptation of sci-fi shooter phenomenon is stopped.

At the end of September, the Halo movie seemed to be right on track. Its executive producer, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, had been a featured speaker at Microsoft's X06 event in Barcelona, Spain. There, he talked up the multimillion-dollar sci-fi epic, which was being directed by novice Neill Blomkamp from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) and D.B. Weiss.

What a difference a month makes. Earlier this month, Universal and Fox--the two Hollywood studios cofinancing the project along with Microsoft--backed out of the project after failing to renegotiate the profit-sharing scheme for the film. It had been slated for a summer 2008 release.

Despite the setback, Microsoft put on a brave face. "Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and the rest of the creative team are dedicated to ensuring the Halo movie becomes a reality," the company said in a statement on October 20. "We are already in discussions with potential partners who recognize the value of the Halo brand and its appeal to consumers worldwide."

Apparently the aforementioned discussions didn't go so well. This week, WingNut Films, Jackson's production company, announced that the release of Halo has been pushed back indefinitely. "At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans...of bringing a first class film to the big screen," read a statement sent out to numerous media outlets by WingNut.

Jackson and Walsh confirmed that Blomkamp would remain on board, praising him as a "tremendously gifted filmmaker" and calling his work on the project "truly awe-inspiring." However, the WingNut statement gave no date for the Master Chief's big-screen debut. "While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait," read the statement.

While Blomkamp is sticking with Halo, neither Garland nor Weiss are currently involved with the project. According to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the film's script was being rewritten for a third time by Josh Olson, who received a 2006 Academy Award nomination for penning A History of Violence.

I hope all of you realize that this movie will never be created...there's way too big of a risk for this movie to completely flop. I mean, think about it. The only people who know what Halo is are gamers...gamers don't make up a very big portion of this world's population. And how many gamers would pay money to see Halo? Maybe half of gamers...let's face it people, for every gamer that loves Halo, there are 3 that hate it. I'm not saying that this couldn't be a major success, I'm just saying that there's a good chance that it won't... haha, you have no ide how many that bought halo! Plus even if the movie sucks gamers will go and see it... I would....

I just hope this movie becomes a success because Halo is such a mad gaming series I actually want to see it on the big-screen at the movies.

Good. A movie is a BAAADD idea. Invest the money in Halo 3 instead. I don't want to sit though a 3 hour yawn-a-thon, I want to activily paticipate in an immersive 20 hour adventure with me as the hero. The xbox 360 has the power to create a movie-like gaming experience which beats watching a movie by a million percent. This is what movie makers don't understand; watching and playing are 2 totally different experiences. And it's why movies based on games will never work.

Yeah, Halo is a good game series, but it is the MOST overrated game in the history of gaming. Also, I think it has the craziest fanboy base

The DOA movie did not even sound good in theory. No implants = no resemblence to the DOA girls. I digress. What a bummer to hear, I was looking forward to this movie.

LordBraz You said it best. Doom is a mega hit in the gaming industry, and when Doom 4 approaches, the gaming community will be on edge. So it's fair to say that the greatness of gameplay does not always translate well to its adaptation on film. So to see the Doom movie being as mediocre as it was, I would hope that another game to movie project, like Halo, will be given more attention, and not rushed in order to profit from the current level of buzz that comsumers hang on to when a title reaches the level of the above mentioned hits, because the buzz always dies down. Let Halo 3 reignite the world with a buzz, and I imagine that the Halo film project will start spinning its wheels again.

Good Decision. Better to make it as good as possible and talk this out rather than throwing the cash around making it bad.

thats a shame... I know soo many people eagerly awaiting the release of this movie, and im still unsure on what they ar to base the movie on. there's three games, and four books, so would they cram it all into a trilogy? a two to three hour long movie would never hold all the details Bungie have made...

Even if it was a horrible game, which I seriously doubt, millions of people will buy it. 'strue... When I finally sat down to play Halo 2, after reading review after review giving top marks, I was a little surprised to see widespread popup during cutscenes, muddy graphics in spots, a bit of a disjointed story that you had to play through a couple times to make sense of, some linear and unimaginative level design (ripped right from H1, or at least similar enough that I couldn't tell the difference in spots)... all things seen as reasons for lower marks in other games but not even given a passing mention in most H2 reviews. We can always ignore the little things for titles we are already convinced we're going to love... Not to say it's not a great game, but personal preference has a tendancy to shine through in reviews.

Halo 3 will not fail. On name alone it will bank near record number of sales. Even if it was a horrible game, which I seriously doubt, millions of people will buy it. Also, as for Halo killers, what ever happened to that Killzone game? Oh well...Face it fanboys and girls, all three systems are here to stay, and they will all have amazing, and different, games. Find the system that fits for you, and stick by it, but don't be blindly loyal to anything just for the sake of the brand name.

dc345601 Was anyone really surprised by this information? When was the last time you saw a movie based off a video game do really well? - Surprising as it may seem, the Resident Evil movies have turned a pretty decent profit; thus continuation of the franchise. Silent Hill did pretty well as well (And is one of the better offerings, even if the second half lets it down) if I recall correctly. I have to admit, with names as big as Halo and Jackson flying around, it's hard to see how this could have gone south. But I expect it will be picked up sooner or later.

Perhaps it is for the best that the movie not even be released at all. Considering the ratio of good movie adaptations of videogames to bad ones, the risk, even with proper funding and peter jackson, is excessive.
