Halo movie indefinitely postponed

Following collapse of studio backing and a proposed third rewrite, work on big-screen adaptation of sci-fi shooter phenomenon is stopped.

At the end of September, the Halo movie seemed to be right on track. Its executive producer, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, had been a featured speaker at Microsoft's X06 event in Barcelona, Spain. There, he talked up the multimillion-dollar sci-fi epic, which was being directed by novice Neill Blomkamp from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) and D.B. Weiss.

What a difference a month makes. Earlier this month, Universal and Fox--the two Hollywood studios cofinancing the project along with Microsoft--backed out of the project after failing to renegotiate the profit-sharing scheme for the film. It had been slated for a summer 2008 release.

Despite the setback, Microsoft put on a brave face. "Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and the rest of the creative team are dedicated to ensuring the Halo movie becomes a reality," the company said in a statement on October 20. "We are already in discussions with potential partners who recognize the value of the Halo brand and its appeal to consumers worldwide."

Apparently the aforementioned discussions didn't go so well. This week, WingNut Films, Jackson's production company, announced that the release of Halo has been pushed back indefinitely. "At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans...of bringing a first class film to the big screen," read a statement sent out to numerous media outlets by WingNut.

Jackson and Walsh confirmed that Blomkamp would remain on board, praising him as a "tremendously gifted filmmaker" and calling his work on the project "truly awe-inspiring." However, the WingNut statement gave no date for the Master Chief's big-screen debut. "While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait," read the statement.

While Blomkamp is sticking with Halo, neither Garland nor Weiss are currently involved with the project. According to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the film's script was being rewritten for a third time by Josh Olson, who received a 2006 Academy Award nomination for penning A History of Violence.

The only glint of light in the whole idea of a Halo: The Movie is that Peter Jackson is involved. He's a gamer so he shares our passion/obsession and he's probably the only human being on the planet that could pull it off

Oh come on guys. All game to movie adaptations have been awesome. I mean how can you not like movies like Mario Brothers and House of the Dead? In all seriousness though, I was really looking forward to this. I agree that Halo is by no means the best first shooter ever, but it is definitely up there. But with Peter Jackson behind it I was getting excited, director or not.

As much as i bash the idea of a Game to movie adaptation, i will still go to see this movie if it is made. I have faith in the film if the script is being written by Josh Olson, please go watch A History of Violence if u dont have the same belief.

I just hope that they don't kill the movie. If they do, all hope will be lost. I'm dead serious, but at least we got the games.

I figured the only good game-to-movie was Silent Hill and even that had a list of flaws. Do us a favor guys and keep Halo off the silver screen.

ya i wanted to see it come out just to watch it fail. its over rated. its not the first scifi shooter to ever come out. yet every one try's to compare every thing to it. its like it has become every one's bench mark to beat. if every game that came out had a single player as sucky as it does i wouldnt be a gamer. but the multi player does save it. but even then it presents nothing new it just does what others did but better. something that sony did??? but any way and the drop ship is a totall rip off of the aliens 2 drop ship. and the main gun totally starship troopers. i dont see the big deal.

Yeah, I actually kind of like the fact it's not being made. Peter Jackson isn't directing it, and game movies tend to suck. I didn't want that to happen with Halo.

Dude movie on a game has be done lots of times before. Silent Hill was a success and i have no idea to believe that a movie based on a game could possibly be that bad. It all depends upon the direction and how the movie has been directed. So it is safe to assume that movie could be good. Not to just say that it sucks,

If you've read the books then you'll know why a movie has to be made. I really don't understand you all who say you can't see it as a movie. No imagination...

I really don't know if a Halo movie is such a good idea. I mean, I love the games like a brother, but I just can't see some guy in Spartan armor with a little purple, holographic person in his suit tellin him what to do on the big screen. I dunno, that's just me.

What kind of sewer dwelling weirdo would want to see a Halo movie? Didn't we learn from the movie Crash that video game to movie adaptations are of no use to any one? That's what that film was about!

Why can't Bill Gates himself jump in and fund the "GD!" Halo movie? Or be more aggressive in finding confident funders? Why is it hard to find backers of such a huge production? Hasn't he bragged about Halo 3 at every recent Xbox event he even bothered (or was "required") to appear at! Remember when the PS3 was supposed to "jump into" Halo 3 the day it launched? Now he is letting what is arguably the prize Xbox franchise twist in the wind in front of the entire gaming community as well devaluing the whole project by letting it sit in limbo. Personally I was quite excited about the movie, a supposed great script mixed with special effects on par with the LotR trilogy and Neill Blomkamp direction, it was actually a movie I was excited about seeing. It had some potential to be an exciting movie, but apparently, at least in the opinion of the Microsoft higher-ups, that it was not important enough to keep in production and therefore eventually come to the masses. So I wonder why we should care, it must have sucked, right?

I agree with jeff2374, let them take their time. The more time they have to overview the movie the better it will be. And considering how long it is going to take, it better be a d*m* good movie!

I'm just reading this and reading about a MGS movie... Uh go try to be sneaky on you're PS2 with it's crappy graphics. I own the PS2 and the Xbox. Sorry, but it seems Xbox has always come out on top when the games are made for the same system. And I know this is all a big ordeal over a Halo movie. Guess what it will happen! Cause it's hollywood! I never thought I would see a DOOM movie when I was younger... It happened, it sucked. But life goes on! Just like the first Mortal Kombat was good, the second one sucked! Oh well? Next thing we know they will be making a live action film of who knows what... Who cares? A movie is a movie. A video game is a video game. If people want to get their hopes up about something then let them. I got my hopes up about DOOM and relized it wasn't worth the wait... Kind of like I did AVP... After Doom I kind of said Hollywood sucks. Microsoft is being careful, that is all. Have a nice day.

Investors with cold feet are nothing new, so no biggie there. I'm betting though, after film studios see how Halo 3 flies off shelves? There will be a few studios ready to step up and put their money in the project, no problem.

i cant see why people think so highley of such a crapy game. the first halo was decent but got old quick. the 2nd was even worse. and the third is most likley going to be even worse. it is an over hyped piece of crap. if you want a good FPS there are plenty that are alot better than halo.

I hope all of you realize that this movie will never be created...there's way too big of a risk for this movie to completely flop. I mean, think about it. The only people who know what Halo is are gamers...gamers don't make up a very big portion of this world's population. And how many gamers would pay money to see Halo? Maybe half of gamers...let's face it people, for every gamer that loves Halo, there are 3 that hate it. I'm not saying that this couldn't be a major success, I'm just saying that there's a good chance that it won't... just like s2i2p2i2o said, people will go to this movie. there are like 20 milion people who played halo, and prob liked it+ you have the sci-fi movie fans+ you have the regular ones= a lot of people.......of course, it is possible that the movie gets very low ratings and nobody will even try to see it......
