Halo movie indefinitely postponed

Following collapse of studio backing and a proposed third rewrite, work on big-screen adaptation of sci-fi shooter phenomenon is stopped.

At the end of September, the Halo movie seemed to be right on track. Its executive producer, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, had been a featured speaker at Microsoft's X06 event in Barcelona, Spain. There, he talked up the multimillion-dollar sci-fi epic, which was being directed by novice Neill Blomkamp from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) and D.B. Weiss.

What a difference a month makes. Earlier this month, Universal and Fox--the two Hollywood studios cofinancing the project along with Microsoft--backed out of the project after failing to renegotiate the profit-sharing scheme for the film. It had been slated for a summer 2008 release.

Despite the setback, Microsoft put on a brave face. "Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and the rest of the creative team are dedicated to ensuring the Halo movie becomes a reality," the company said in a statement on October 20. "We are already in discussions with potential partners who recognize the value of the Halo brand and its appeal to consumers worldwide."

Apparently the aforementioned discussions didn't go so well. This week, WingNut Films, Jackson's production company, announced that the release of Halo has been pushed back indefinitely. "At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans...of bringing a first class film to the big screen," read a statement sent out to numerous media outlets by WingNut.

Jackson and Walsh confirmed that Blomkamp would remain on board, praising him as a "tremendously gifted filmmaker" and calling his work on the project "truly awe-inspiring." However, the WingNut statement gave no date for the Master Chief's big-screen debut. "While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait," read the statement.

While Blomkamp is sticking with Halo, neither Garland nor Weiss are currently involved with the project. According to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the film's script was being rewritten for a third time by Josh Olson, who received a 2006 Academy Award nomination for penning A History of Violence.

Silent Hill is probably the best video game based movie that will ever exist. The Halo movie seems like a stupid idea truth be told. "Look at me! I'm a soldier in stupid green armor. I have no name, and no face. I kill aliens for no reason....besides the fact that....they're aliens. Lol, watch my movie." Also, consider this. Trying to sum up an entire war story like Halo's in one movie would never work well. It's not enough time to have even a half decent story. Not like the game has a good story or anything...it's horrible...but movies should be on a totally different level.

Lol! As if itd ever work anyways. MS got pwned, though I feel a little bad for em... Honestly, Halo shouldnt be raped. Look what it brought to... lets see... Tombraider? FF7? Whether Peter Jackson is involved or not (he's not even directing...) this movie would fail. I think so at least.

Oy. What a headache. Now, I'm not a Halo fan by any means, but I must say that this whole thing is a bit tiresome with all its delays and hurdles. Heck, I was even looking forward to seeing the Halo flick when it was supposed to come out. Oh, well.

For people saying there never has been a good video-game movie, WRONG. Silent Hill is the best in my opinion and it was selling good cinema tickets too. The resident evil movies tried but the lack of seriousness from the writers and the casting depicted a movie experience worse than what the games themselves delivered. I think Halo could make for a good movie, it certainly has/ HAD a good executive producer, writer and financial backing (M$)..I don't agree with the choice of director though. I am sure we will see it come to the big screen, but definetly a huge delay since all sides have chosen a mutual postpone. On a side-note, check out the upcoming Ninja Turtles CGI movie, definetly looking nice. Also rumours of Hideo Kojima planning on bringing the MGS to the big screen. Exciting exciting.... And please for all the Gods sake, make a resistance against Uwe Boll movies..please. Recently he has purchased the rights to FarCry. OMG, being killed with a spoon is more pleasent.

It's funny--------why doesn't Microsoft just fund the whole thing? Think about it-------even if it costs 300 million to make (which is ENORMOUS), Bill Gates himself could fund the whole thing, let alone Microsoft, and then they would get ALL the profits, so why would they not want to do that to begin with? After all, let's face it----Halo IS the reason the XBOX became such a success...

Would've been interesting to see how the whole "Halo movie" experiment panned out. Personally, I didn't have my sights set too high. Still, could've been decent. Too bad for the Halo junkies.

You know, that is really too bad, because I was looking for a good video game movie adaptation. Realistically, an indefinite delay of this project gives it about a zero chance of making it to the big screen, at this point....I now grieve for the halo movie that will never be....

Chromium42...Fox and Universal were unimpressed with what they've seen so far in the production, THAT is why they left, not profit-sharing squabbles. Microsoft just finds one thing that works and whores the heck out of it as fast as they can, ruining the quality of the product they BOUGHT.

That is so lame!!!!! Microsoft could easily finance this film if they wanted to and let it go in the creative and right direction that everyone wants it to go in.

I disagree to the person (Lilac_Benjie) who said only noobs to FPS think Halo is the best. Ive played alot of FPS since the 1st official FPS "wolfenstein" and I would say Halo captivated me the most, up there would be Half Life, and Goldeneye probably all tied. I hope they make the movie, but I agree to the fact it better be good, unlike almost every other game to movie experience.

Only noobs to the FPS genre think that Halo is the best FPS ever. And what is your ultimate FPS ? Counter Strike Source and Half Life 2 are the only other decent one's but neither has wracked up over 600 million games online for a console. They all have their pro's and con's. Halo 1 took alot more skill but playing online in Halo 2 has a great community feel that isn't anywhere else.

"JediJon04 I really am glad the movie's not being made. There's no point in having a movie that would undoubtedly suck with noobs to the movie scene writing and directing it. Microsoft's just about the money they can squeeze out of the brand. Don't they realize that brand names don't equal big money? Sigh...thank you Fox and Universal for stopping this travesty before it saw the light of day! " Gimme a break! Fox and Universal were squabling over the profit-sharing for the film and that's why they backed out! Business IS all about squeezing the money out of the brand; it's why you invent the brand in the first place. As for the film getting put on hold; I'm indifferent. I just want to be able to play some Halo 3 by Spring 2007.

I think it will get snapped up as soon as halo 3 stuff rolls in. The thing is, Universal etc are ALL companies after making a sure fire buck. Take a look at their movies, all big names, all make a profit. I can see someone like New Line Cinema etc snap this one up. But the key here is having a showreel to show investors HOW big this will be. For example, at the moment, video game to movie movies arent so great at generating masses of profit. However, as soon as Halo 3 stuff starts coming out, the ad campaigns will reign.. and when there is more evidence of where this Halo franchise is going, this is when investors of the movie companies say "ok, looks big, im in!". This is the only problem, because of the budget and to see if it will be a commercial success. I mean, look at i robot... the film was terrible, if you had a nobody atarring in it, the budget wouldnt even BE there in the first place. But because will smith was at his prime, because the film garnered many sponsors (audi, converse..) it had the OK. But for a faceless games character... its harder to push on with a large budget. All that needs to happen is for halo 3 to show stuff, halo wars to show stuff, and create a big halo franchise for the film to sail under. Stick a couple of big names in there.. and there you have it. SOLD. I think this descision to not make it by universal was mainly because of King Kong not being such a massive success that it COULD of been, and investors have doubts about the premise of the game actually creating a buzz in the industry to make any sort of profit.. Once the gates are open on the halo franchise though, investors can see where its going. And thats that ;) Its like that for any movie. Alot of movies get scrapped or put on hold, then once some actor begins to become famous, they get stuck in that movie which had probably been ready to go for years.

It's good that they aren't rushing the movie, but you gotta wonder that if the Halo franchise isn't top dog in the next few years like it is now, will the movie get the attention it deserves? I just say this because most video game films hardly get any profit due to lack of people seeing the movie. Even though Silent Hill did fairly decent at the box office, I just hope that timing won't ruin how well this film does. But, it's good Peter Jackson is staying on, his movies are awesome

Paper thin story?? I wasn't aware that you knew the final part of it that transpires in Halo 3. Please bedazzle us with how it ends. I'm bloody tired of people bashing on a story that isn't complete!! It was written as a trilogy, period. No matter what, the Halo haters are gonna say either the story sucks or the gameplay sucks. Next thing they are gonna say is, if you support Halo then you are anti-America. Talk about flip flop. BTW I own all systems and plan to get a PS3. So I am un-biased.
