Halo Infinite On Xbox One Won't Be "Second-Class," Says Halo Boss

The Project Scarlett version of the game will be the "special citizen" but people on regular Xbox One will still have a good experience, Halo boss says.

Halo Infinite is releasing in Holiday 2020 as a launch title for Microsoft's new and more powerful next-generation console, Project Scarlett, as well as the standard Xbox One in addition to PC.

Halo boss Frank O'Connor spoke about this distributed release in an interview with YouTuber Blackmist523. O'Connor said the Halo development team worked alongside the hardware developers behind Scarlett to allow for the game to look and perform "amazingly" on the next-generation system.

Now Playing: Halo Infinite E3 Trailer Has No Gameplay But Is All In On Story

That being said, O'Connor said people playing on the standard Xbox One (and presumably the Xbox One X) will still have a good experience. "The Xbox One is not going to be a second-class citizen. We're building it so it plays and looks fantastic on Xbox One," O'Connor said.

Halo Infinite is also launching for PC, on the same day it comes to consoles. That's a big change for the series, as Microsoft never released the mainline instalments after Halo 2 on PC (though they are coming to PC now through The Master Chief Collection). The PC version of Halo Infinite might end up being the best version of Halo Infinite--provided your rig is beefy enough, O'Connor said.

Here are his full thoughts on the matter:

"Obviously the special citizen [for Halo Infinite] will be Scarlett, and we've worked with that hardware team to make sure the game shows up amazingly on it, and work with them to make sure that we know how to make sure the game look amazing on it, but it will be for Xbox One and it will look incredible. And it will also be for PC for the first time, day and date so that's exciting for us too.

"That's changed the way we develop and the way we think about things, but we are always shooting for the best possible hardware target. This time it's going to be up to you to decide--is it going to be Scarlett or PC; it kind of depends on your PC at that point. But the Xbox One is not going to be a second-class citizen. We're building it so it plays and looks fantastic on Xbox One, and then everything else is plus-plus-plus, but we've got a few tricks up our sleeves that we're thinking about. "

Given the increased horsepower of Project Scarlett, and O'Connor's statement that developer 343 Industries is developing toward the "best possible hardware target," it remains to be seen if the standard Xbox One version will be limited in any capacities. Presumably the better hardware with Project Scarlett will allow the game on that platform to look and run better, but any other differences between the versions are unknown for now.

Also in the interview, O'Connor spoke briefly and at a high level about Halo Infinite's story and how it is connected to the events of Halo 5: Guardians but also aims to be approachable to newcomers. O'Connor also talked about how while the E3 2019 Halo Infinite trailer did not show any new gameplay, it did introduce players to some of what to expect about how the game will look and feel at the start.

While Halo Infinite isn't scheduled to release until Holiday 2020, a beta for the game will be held prior to release.

It would be pretty important too and fair that the XB1(X) version of the game can be freely upgraded to the 'XB2' version. It sucks that I had to re-buy the Skyrim game for the XB1 after I ditched my XB360.

It's coming out for PC. No need to even think about Xbox or Scarlett. :)

@neurogia: Don't forget to save up $2K for new parts before December 2020. Otherwise you'll be out of luck.

@xhawk27: There are cheap PCs that can still outperform consoles and even though higher spec'ed PCs cost more upfront, you end up saving more over time due to free online and cheaper games, as well as better warranty policies on parts. If you can't afford it upfront there are financing options available. Besides PCs can be used to more than recoup the initial investment as it's not just a gaming platform, so it can be an asset to anyone who can type a word doc, whereas consoles will always be liabilities.

@xhawk27: Nothing's known about the exact specs of the two 9th gen consoles but even if they are sold at a loss, you'll be able to build similarly priced PCs that will outperform these consoles, and everything else I said about PCs will still stand.

I need official specs for the nextbox to see if it’s worth getting rid of my One X. Halo always looks great so I’m not worried about visuals.

I think having different games developed would be interesting, like Double Agent, where the Xbox version was far superior to the 360 version. But that takes effort and money bags.

Why bother bringing it to the awful ddr3 eSRAM bottleneck Xbone console at all though??? The only benefit is the million or so other sales you will get on the game bringing it to that console, a console that people will have jumped ship from EVEN MORE by the end of 2020. The game is already being brought to 800 million Windows users, that barely a couple of million will "play" for 5 seconds anyway, so they have that part covered. Why compromise a game by so much.

Then lets look at PlayStation by comparison. Up until May this year, everyone was so impressed by the visuals on that game that people were saying, mostly Xbots though, "there is no way that is a PS4 game, DS is a PS5 game". The exact same can be said about Ghost of Tsushima after its mind blowing E3 2018 ingame reveal. The same people are saying the same about The Last of Us Part II too even though they were wrong about Death Stranding. At least Sony has it covered that people already think their games are next gen lol. So if their games like Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU Part II end up with even more bells and whistles on them with a PS5 enhanced patch at the console's launch, then at least you were already blown away by the current gen 2013 PS4 console version to begin with.

Nothing about Halo 6 looks impressive whatsoever to date, regardless of it being current gen/next gen or even if it was 8K footage.

There's the PC version, the next gen version, the X1X version, and then the Xbox One version. So yeah, it's going to be fourth class.

It's a cross gen game. We all know what to expect from cross gen games. It's gonna be a last-gen game with shinier bits and bobs on current-gen.

@xhawk27: No, and nothing I said even indicated as much so I'm not sure where you're pulling that out of... Still means Horizon Zero Dawn 2 is just gonna be a PS4 game with slightly better graphics on a PS5 version.

@xhawk27: Well considering that Killzone Shadowfall was PS4 only at LAUNCH I'm pretty sure that HZD2 will most likely be used to market the PS5, not the other way round. System sellers do what their names tell you. All powers to MS for trying this approach though.

@skyhighgam3r: Haters gonna hate I guess because who really cares. The whole point in next gen is to have "shinier bits and bobs" anyways. Like ray-tracing, higher resolution and/or frame rates. As time goes on the leap between generations gets smaller and smaller. You should go watch the Digital Foundry video of the trailer if you want see what to expect from the game.

@Lord_Sesshy: "HaTeRs GoNnA hAtE" Did I say I hate Halo? Did I suggest people don't buy it or something? No. I made a statement, a factual one at that. It's not something controversial or divisive. It just 'is'. When you develop for 2 platforms, you are beholden to the limits of the weaker one. There's no argument there to be had. That's just how it works.

I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but I can’t help but feel new entries in big name franchises that are making their debut on next gen consoles (let alone being the flagship title for the brand.) should not be compromised in any way due to trying to meet the demand of current existing hardware.

Games like Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3 blew away gamers from every vantage thanks in part to utilizing as much of the new tech at its disposal without having to limit anything due to the previous generation (PS2.).

While I do think it is a smart move from a business standpoint to engage in this practice I don’t think that by “putting a cap” on this next entry (I know they say they are not but c’mon…) it will garner the same level of praise that say Halo 3 did when it first came out.

More than any gen before it I feel that the PS4/X box One gen has held on to the previous gen at all costs (Remaster/HD remakes/Ports to PS3 & 360.). I know it probably won’t change with the introduction of the PS5/Next Box but I would love to see a return to form to what made the PS3/360 gen so great. Namely, not holding onto the past but forging ahead at all costs with exciting new IPs and perfecting long standing franchises as they make their way into the new generation of gaming.

@videogameninja: I think you have good points as usual.

I just worry... 343 has made tons of mistakes. They often engage in a over hype style of game development. And when it finally launches they can't seem to fully deliver...

With MCC they promised a crap ton of great halo games done better that are all online. Sounded like a classic halo players dream game. Sadly... It launched broken as heck and only recently got fixed up fairly decently but STILL has some annoying issues. Basically... The failed pretty hard in a lot of ways.

They way they handled the coming of halo 5 was pretty messed up. Seemed like a epic show down between a new spartan and our boy MC. The game really wasn't about that... They made it seem like MC was losing it without cortana but no... Not really lol. They did a bunch of commercials and advertisements that showed stuff that doesn't even happen in the actual game lol. Like not even close... They couldn't even get a br/drm hud first person view correctly lol. Do they even know what guns are which over there at 343? They could of told us about the lack of split screen during beta test time but they told us about it 3 months prior to launch. And when they did tell us about it they were pretty shady about being vocal about it. Pretty lame...

Halo wars 2? Halo wars who??? No one really cared about that game. Hence the low low sales. And it too has a weak story, bullcrap dlc practices, AND micro transactions. Fairly weak RTS game honestly... And for shame. I remember halo wars 1 actually having flood that wasn't dlc but okay...

And now we're getting some more stuff from 343 soon. MCC on pc with reach and then halo infinite which is probably going to have evil micro transactions. I'm not feeling halo as strongly as I once did when bungie was running the show back in the day. And I didn't even talk about the codlike feel that they have added more and more as time went on...

I'm not very interested. We'll see how well they do. With 343's track record I don't think it's a good idea to fully trust them but hey... We'll see.
