Halo Infinite Now Releasing Fall 2021

Microsoft confirms a new release date for Halo Infinite.

Halo Infinite is now expected to release in Fall 2021, developer 343 Industries confirmed in a blog post. As part of the developer's year-end update, 343 confirmed the new release date and also provided some new insight on the game's graphics, art, and customization features.

Halo Infinite was originally expected to release as a launch title for the Xbox Series X|S in November, but due to complications related to COVID-19, and other factors, Microsoft delayed the game to an unspecified point in 2021. The new Fall 2021 date might be later than some expected, as it's a full year beyond what was originally announced.

343 also published images of the first Halo Infinite multiplayer map. As announced previously, the multiplayer element of Halo Infinite will be free-to-play, which is a big change for the series.

Joseph Staten, a longtime Microsoft veteran who recently returned to Halo to work on Halo Infinite, said he's impressed by what he's seen from the development team.

"Folks here don't just understand Halo, they love the core gameplay and characters and community--everything that makes Halo, Halo--just as much as I do. And, like me, they also feel a deep responsibility to serve," he said. "

"We aren't making this game for us. We're making it for you. My first week on the job, I played the entire Infinite campaign. Twice. I was, in a word, stunned—in the best possible way—by what the team had done. Infinite is, by far, the most expansive and vertical Halo world, ever. Why did the team do this? Because they understand that wonder and freedom are key to the Halo experience."

When Halo Infinite releases, it will be available on Xbox Series X|S, as well as Xbox One and PC. Xbox Game Pass subscribers can play it at no extra cost.

The new Halo Infinite blog post also included new details on multiplayer, while the developer also acknowledged concerns about the game's graphics. Additionally, 343 shed some light on how Halo Infinite will use microtransactions, but not loot boxes.

Ooph, as a big Halo fan and community member that delay hurts. That being said I'm much more happy about what they're saying and showing this time around. There's no video but these shots look far more in line with what I wanted to see.

I'm still stuck on the simplistic faction coloring that seems to be shown on the base structures and objects in the original summer trailer. I hope they've decided to forgo that, it looked strait out of Halo Wars. Not that I minded it in an RTS like Halo Wars but it's excessive in a standard FPS like Halo. Similarly that kind of heavy handed use of Red VS Blue accenting on competitive maps that has been creeping its way into the FPS world feels a bit like using a hammer to affix tape to the wall. I know it's a simple way to allow people to quickly identify factions and or self orient on excessively symmetrical maps for team games like CTF, but it's pretty shabby level design.

I can understand that devs want noobs and the easily confused to quickly grasp maps and their team sides but it's still a poor excuse. So it takes a couple runs to get your bearings, big deal. In the end this type of overly simple colour coding feels like the thing that Forgers did in Reach customs mostly due to the rudimentary editor. It has no place in an official map, not with a full art team behind them. Somebody also needs to tell the art team that visual markers don't always have to be in your face to still allow for easy orientation.

On the topic of being easily confused, there seems to be the need to make overly complex maps as if complexity is a synonym for quality. Maps should be easy to pick up, fun to play and yet still require plenty of experience to master. That's where the original trilogy shines. I have no interest in verbose maps that leave you more confused after 3 playthroughs than you were on the first. But Hey! luckily somebody color coded it so I always know what side I'm on :/

Sounds about right. Both consoles were unprepared for launch and probably will have more of a "real" launch by then. The idiocy this year was just an attempt to capture this Xmas season.

If they had been able to release this at launch as a finished product, the Series X would be selling for 2 grand on Ebay just like the PS5. Since they did not, just release it when it is complete and as good as it will get.

@theduckofdeath: When it actually sells for that much it's typically to the wealthy, the ignorant, or the desperate. Sometimes all three.

In general most of the time nobody gets the grandiose numbers they're hoping for. still a few hundred bucks for doing next to no work is a nice thing to put in your pocket. If someone had gotten their hands on three consoles they would likely be able to sell of two to pay for the third. Yay free next gen console.

So this gives more folks time to install the excellent Gears Tactics. Missed it on PC? Didn't love X-Com? Don't normally play TBS? none of these are problems.

Fire it up on Easy if you have to, but this is a fast, fluid TBS that rewards pushing forward rather that always just sitting in overwatch.

They should take as long as possible to release Halo Infinite. It was supposed to be their launch title but they went back to the drawing board. I am glad 343 isn't rushing it out. November 2021 is when I expect Halo Infinite to release.

I am kind of happy about this.

I wasn't going to build a new rig for 4k gaming until summer of next year. This just makes me feel a little bit better about that. So it will look great on that rig. Looking forward to Infinite!

By then most of the Cyberpunk 2077 bugs will be gone as well, and prolly some good DLC for it too.

I get the reasoning for all this and the new pics look great. However, it's still hugely disappointing to someone who started playing video games again for the first time in three years because of the pandemic. By the time this releases ill be too busy to enjoy it.

Meh... It hasn't been a priority since Halo 4 IMO.

I'm always the first to point of that H5 Warzone and WZ Firefight are two of the all-time greatest team MP modes you can play (even today), but it's not a main weekly focus or anything.

Delay it a year if that's what it takes. They should have done this for Halo 5 or better yet never released it. Just saying though...

How do you miss your release window by a whole year? Who do they think they are CDPR? Or a Nintendo game studio? Or just about every studio in 2020?

Feigned salt aside I am of the opinion any game should be delayed for purpose of reaching its potential for however long it takes. I would rather that than have what may have been a great idea turn into garbage by rushing its development. I do worry about the trend I've seen throughout the industry all my life. When a game gets delayed (especially this long) and then devs begin to leave the game in the hands of others, 9.5/10 the game becomes a giant turkey. Microsoft may be the exception to the rule as the newly acquired studios would help the development process of this game tremendously (Machine Games, ID, potentially Bungie if the rumors are true though I doubt it). But it would almost be a first if it did turn out for the better. We shall see but I am not holding my breath.

@fud_sang: You think MS is the only company that misses it deadline. All in all I rather they release and good product and not an rushed one. Now there is no guarantee that the game may be GOTY and if the game is Sh++y then, then I will say someone mucked up badly. I am giving them an chance to make amends instead of living in the past.

Long as Craig the Brute stays and is an NPC I'm okay and all I ask is don't screw it up 343. I'm still a Halo fan since CE but in the meantime, I'll just enjoy playing Halo: Master Chief Collection.

Speaking of improvements on the art/content side, one big outcome from our demo was the emergence of the now world-renowned “Craig.” While we and the internet have come to love dear Craig, we know he wasn’t his “best self” back in July. Can you give us any updates on Craig as he stands today?

NH: Firstly, I can confirm that the facial animation on NPCs was not fully implemented in that build, which resulted in Craig’s incredibly deadpan/lifeless look. All characters are modelled in a neutral pose, prior to blendshapes & animation being applied. So, poor old Craig was never intended to be seen in that condition which is not something that was evident during the gameplay. It was only later, in the close-up freeze frame of his one bad moment, where it came to light and the legend of Craig was born.

There’s been further work done on the material fidelity and more variety added for Brute faces, we’re also working to add some hairdos and beards which was something we hadn’t gotten to in July. So, whilst we have come to love our dear old Craig, he’s certainly undergoing a significant makeover.

Craig isn’t the only model to see improvements though, there have been significant changes to other characters & 3D models as we continue to evolve and polish our content, some of which can be seen in the Spartan and weapon renders being shared today.

@Thanatos2k: I specifically said console sales for that reason. I think market share is a fuzzy concept, though. I'd say MSFT probably cares more about cross-platform synergies and recurring revenue, Sony cares more about raw revenue/market share, and Nintendo cares more about profitability. It is possible for all of them to believe their strategy is the best, and that they are executing it well. MSFT could (and probably will) lose the console sales war and still win other "wars."

We can expect the game to probably re-launch the Serie X/S next year for the big holiday rush.

Expect MS to create a reboot for Serie X with some big events to help sells the console.

@v1ndictive: Because the PS5 is also sold out everywhere. And for some, a new console is better than nothing. Also the scalpers are responsible for many of the next Gen console purchases and thus drives demand up even more. At this point, many people will buy whatever console they can because they are not patient enough to wait till April. I will likely be waiting till then to get a 3080.

I guess there was a lot to fix if it got delayed that much (even though I did like the gameplay they showed), definitely glad they are being careful about it, I have a good feeling about the game.
