Halo Infinite Dev Responds To "Unfounded" Battle Royale Rumors

The reports are "unfounded," 343's community director says.

Halo's community director has responded to a new rumor about Halo Infinite, and he's shut it down. Recently, a rumor appeared that claimed one part of Microsoft's long-term vision for Halo Infinite would be to add a battle royale mode in 2021. It looks like that was just that--a rumor--and it doesn't look like it'll actually come to fruition.

Brian Jarrard, the community director at 343 Industries, responded to this scuttlebutt with a tweet. "Nothing gets a post-holiday Monday going like fresh unfounded Halo Infinite rumors," he said.

Jarrard doesn't mention battle royale by name, but it's clear that his tweet is in response to the latest conjecture about the long-in-development game. In a follow-up tweet, Jarrard said he understands that fans are eager for more information about Halo Infinite. To that end, 343 is planning to release a "year-end update" that will have some new details.

What we do know about Halo Infinite's multiplayer element is that it will be free-to-play, supported in part by microtransactions. 343 has yet to show any gameplay of multiplayer, but the studio has revealed some of the armor coatings AKA skins that will be featured in the multiplayer element.

Back in 2019, Microsoft addressed reports about Halo Infinite introducing a battle royale mode. Franchise director Frank O'Connor said the multiplayer modes for Halo Infinite at launch were not defined yet and could be subject to change until late in the process.

While Halo Infinite may not have a traditional battle royale experience, O'Connor teased, "Are we interested in big social modes with loads of organic shenanigans? Yes. Specifically A blimp full of survivors heading to an Island after a (metaphorical) lecture from Beat Takeshi? No. We are NOT doing this as of now--and no plans to."

O'Connor went on to point out that if you really want a Halo battle royale game, you can make it for yourself in Halo 5 or Halo: MCC with the Forge map-making tools.

Halo Infinite was originally set to release as a launch title for the Xbox Series X|S, but due in part to complications related to COVID-19, Microsoft pushed the game out to 2021. No final release date was offered when the delay was made.

I'm confused, I don't see him denying anything. So yes, crappy uninspiring battle royale confirmed? Don't use the "I can't say anything" as an excuse. Better to not say anything at all.

one of the best thinfs with ce back in the day was 16 player lan match (and later on pc online) with 1 life. when pubg was announced i spend looot of time thinking whats the revolution here.

but same time knowing that halo teams havent shied away from blatantly taking territories and assault modes and more from other games it is surprising they are so stuck up about adding a mode/playlist with 1 life and having different tweaks around that. but they arent the first studio to be so sure of themselves and stuck up to add things that they cant brag they invented. then they talk about creativity and show us a demo that has absolutely nothing new

@mogan: Oh, I know...that was just sarcasm and snark. Situation seems a bit like the MMO/WOW situation was, with everyone scrambling to try to get it on the gravy train after seeing what WOW had been able to create in terms of an income stream, but nobody really ever managing to match it or come out with the white whale "WOW killer" everyone always talked about. Instead, just a lot of slapdash iteration and copycatting with little innovation for the most part.

"Mantle ability for 400 UNSC Credits, Dash for 600, and Jetpack for only 1100!"

...

BTW, Halo 5 MP -- particularly the amazing Warzone and Warzone Firefight -- still run flawlessly, even on GP Android. Hop in!

I hope they don't build one. Just put the tools in Forge and let the community find its way.

FFS no more battle royales. Just stop.

If Halo did this, they wouldn't do it right, I don't think. It'd just be another trend-following cash-in and after people tried it, they would go back to APEX or CoD Warzone.

This game is turning into an urban legend, does it really exist? If so why no one has seen it?

@jyml8582: People did see it, got pissed, screamed about it all over the internet, said it was bad. as a result, the developer delayed the game and now we're waiting.

The "just make your own in Forge" thing feels unsatisfactory to me since Halo 5 and MCC are limited to just 16 or 24 players, not enough for a proper Battle Royale.

Wouldn't expect Infinite's player count to push much higher, since it has to run on the lowly base Xbox One, and presumably be all cross-gen/cross-platform

@Spartan_418: It's no less capable than any of the other game engines that were built up to support it.

He did not say no, which doesn't mean BR could come to halo : I

He would of said we had no plans to add BR to Halo:I

343 has been straight forward about fake rumors with Halo:I Demo

I love Halo but for me personally, the term "battle royale" ranks only second to the word "mobile" in terms of buzzwords that instantly make me lose any and all interest in a game. Besides, Halo has always had a last man standing mode and no one gave a shit about it most of the time anyway. I'd rather see a larger version of Big Team Battle with more players and vehicles similar to Warzone but even bigger and without the card gimmicks.
