Halo Infinite--343 Industries Cares About Getting The Visual Look Right, And Responds To Complaints

The game's narrative experience director says he knows what it feels like to be let down by a reveal.

Microsoft has finally showcased Halo Infinite's gameplay, but the reaction has been mixed. Some people criticized the way the game looks, which prompted Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg to point out that the game is a work-in-progress and it will improve in the lead-up to launch.

Now, Halo Infinite's narrative experience director Dan Chosich has commented further on the fan reaction to Halo Infinite. He said on Twitter that he understands what it feels like to be let down after getting hyped about something. He wants fans to know that their concerns are "not falling on deaf ears." The series has been criticized since 343 took over from Bungie, both for what some players think are lackluster campaign modes and multiplayer that seems to lack its own identity.

"I've been in your shoes. I know what it's like to have expectations built + feel let down," Chosich said. "I want you to know your voice matters + is heard. You're not falling on deaf ears. I always want to live up to the legacy that Bungie pioneered. I personally care a lot about honoring that."

People have commented that Halo Infinite's visuals look "flat" and not all that impressive, despite Microsoft touting the power of the Xbox Series X. Developer 343 Industries is taking some of the feedback in stride, even embracing the Craig the Brute meme.

In addition to gamers, some brands are getting involved in dunking on Microsoft for the Halo Infinite reveal. The Domino's Pizza UK Twitter account roasted Microsoft for the Halo Infinite graphics.

Halo Infinite will get better-looking after launch, as 343 is planning a ray-tracing update for sometime after release. However, the art style will likely still be far different than it was in the last two games. A new figure available for purchase better shows off the Master Chief's new armor, which doesn't feature the complex level of detail from 343's previous designs.

Halo Infinite is due to release this holiday as a launch title for the Xbox Series X. The game will also come to the standard Xbox One as well as PC. For lots more, check out GameSpot's video overview above that covers everything you need to know about Halo Infinite.

Graphics looked entirely fine. Just curious how many people actually watched it in 4k on youtube & on a 4k display vs a smartphone screen?

The issue with the graphics wasn't that they looked flat or pixelated, it was that the demo was suffering from texture & particle effect pop-ins. It was a big issue through out the demo. It simply wasn't optimized for the hardware to buffer the texture assets.

I was impressed with the Xbox showcase. The games they should appealed to me way more than that of Sony, not to mention there seems to be more of a variety on Xbox...As for Halo, the graphics were subpar, but being shown at 1080P and on a PC, it doesn't surprise me. That's why I tend to take "gameplay" videos lightly. I know there's been tons of games in the past that were shown through demos and didn't look up to par, then played the game for myself and was blown away by the graphics etc. I imagine something similar with Halo, despite the Sony haters(seems to be the majority of the haters). At any rate there's the added bonus of Game Pass, I can try the game out first before I decide to buy it. You have those hating on it as well. Game Pass is a great feature, paid a $1 back in April don't have to pay again until October...can enjoy games like RDR2, SOT, State Of Decay 2, Grounded, No Man's Sky, Ark, GTA5(gone now), Outer world's etc. Then if I decide I would like to purchase any of those or the many other games, I can at a discount, also goes for the extra content(expansions etc), just for being a Game Pass member.

Halo Infinite looks more next gen than any other game I’ve seen yet. The graphics are great. So clean and sharp. I love the direction they’ve gone. Theres a solidness and weight to the graphics. Not sure if thats a consequence of the 10 X processing power per pixel compared to Halo 5 though I’m not a programmer.

The warthog looks like an actual model. There’s a sense of realism about the graphics. The enemy look more solid and less like sprites from previous games. Once they sort out the dynamic lighting and add raytracing this game is going to be a beauty.

Man, open world Halo at 4K 60. How many other open world games run at 4K 60 on console? I can’t think of any.

This game is going to be a belter.

Prediction:

It’s going to go down as one of the greatest games of all time.

120fps minimum 1080p is ok. MS can’t blame fans for expecting anything released to look amazing, that was rammed down our throat since the Series X was announced. Sometimes it’s better to not oversell things because the backlash can hurt the brand especially with social media platforms, the biggest influences

How did they waste so much time and squander such "powerful" hardware to make a game that's basically at Halo 4s level but with w worse color palette.

@Erroneous_Snake: lol, you know this how. Played the game yet? I'm not a fan of the last two games, but from what I'm hearing and seeing, certainly have a renewed interest with this one. I won't judge it though, until I can play it(on Game Pass). Lol you're judging it off of a short game play demo done on a PC with supposedly the same specs as the Series X, while streamed at 1080p, really...

The stench of damage control is intense. This will not be fixed by release, but they will go to great lengths to try and pretend it will.

But, what have they done for multiplayer mode? I'll wait to see that first. Initial reviews after launch will reveal what they did compared to current Halo 5 multiplayer mode(s) if they don't preview that. If they axed WZ FF, that would probably not be a good thing...The current SR ranking system and Requisition system could use some vast improvements. That is their cash driver and not Campaign mode. We'll see what happens there.

@aross2004: Can't. First he has to disable automatic Windows protocols that prevent updates and/or install the wrong drivers in their place. And even if he does, it might happen again anyway. Then you have to start dealing with the policy editor.

Yes. This sort of thing does happen.

What I find funny is that a month ago people were saying "Tflops and graphics don't matter it's all about the games"...The way some of you back pedal is hilarious! I think gamers who are not fans of MS the company and journalists alike love to troll Xbox. Seriously they have to do everything right to please people and it's just video games...its not that serious. The best part is for all the people who say Halo is boring or just don't like the graphics...guess what? Wait for it....No one is forcing you to buy it, look at demos, or even play it at your friends house lol. Your safe and welcome to play whatever makes you happy other than Halo...

@alucard1001:

It’s been like this the entire generation. Anything to do with Microsoft Xbox no matter how good it is is going to get slammed. Anything sony ps related is going to get praised. And gaming sites like this one are partly to blame as well.

Microsoft Xbox can’t win no matter what they do. I mean some fanboys were complaining about Gamepass. Like what on earth is there to complain about with Gamepass? It’s the very best deal in gaming and only getting better with Xcloud.

What do sony have to compete? NOTHING.

Microsoft are far better at giving there fans new and exciting features.

People who grew up with playstation as their main console will never admit defeat. It’s pathetic. (And I’m not talking about console sales)

@alucard1001: You gotta keep things in perspective. Don't forget MS is running around touting how great and advanced the XSX will be only to reveal a game that looks no more advanced than an early 360 title. And this is a first party flagship title, no less.

It's not about tflops and graphics. It's about MS spewing hot air.

No more advanced than a 360 title.

Your obviously an SDF pony.

Halo Infinite is 4K 60 on XseX. That’s more advanced than anything ps4 let alone X360. How many open worlds on ps4 run at 4K 60?

Halo Infinite looks more next gen than any other game I’ve seen to date. And I’ve watch all the conferences/streams.

@alucard1001: Agreed. It's whey too earlier to predict gloom and doom at this point. Everything will not be crystal perfect at launch time. Just be prepared for that first series of long loading/updating monster patches that'll come flying through a month or two right after the launch. Let alone the long install time for us non-Xbox-X players out there.

Can we just agree that Halo 2A is the direction that we wanted the art and graphics to go. Add another 8 years of refinement, dim the lights back down and the blood back up to Halo Classic levels and poof there you have it.

I'll wait to pass judgment on the game direction once I've had a chance to play.

It's ridiculous to patch ray-tracing in post-release when that's one of the key features of this next gen gpu in the console. Missed an opportunity to show off what their new engine can do and muffled the excitement of the crowd.

The environment in the demo look somewhat like Mass Effect Andromeda but more empty. But I think in MP games the graphics probably take a backseat to focus more on balance and stuff. Though a game of Halo's caliber and mass appeal should be really solid in every aspect.

About ''it will get better, you'll see it will be great'', Crackdown 3 was hyped by MS for years and years and was going to be mindblowing. See how that turned out. Maybe MS just doesn't have the touch with exclusives. Their focus is more on multiplayer, because that's what their base wants.

Sony keep nailing their exclusives with every release. Most likely because single player is their focus so the story is more fleshed out and the environments are crafted with purpose instead of being arenas. Oh wait TLOU, Uncharted and maybe others have MP. Maybe less polished and smaller install base? I wouldn't know, I don't play MP.

Edit: @games100 post under mine proves my point about the graphics

@Keaze_: I play MP and hope they've significantly improved that. But I'll wait and see if we've been forgotten about due to the focus on the campaign mode. MP is what drives those dollars /subscriptions to the MS piggy bank. I wouldn't discount that if I were them.

@games100: Same here and some folks do not understand the term Work in progress meaning we are showing you some unfinished work and what MS should have stated along with that is what they want us to focus on as it is apparent to me the graphics may not have been the target for me to focus on. I rather wait until the game goes gold and then I will get the final details than get uptight over something that is not finished.

Most of the people complaining are people who are not gonna buy it and never was in the first place. If I was the dev I would focus in the fans who are truly interested in playing the game instead of finding things to complain about...The game is not even close to being out buy yet everyone has rated it already lol. Anything MS puts out gets overly criticized while Sony and Nintendo can never do any wrong. On some realnesss... I'm on like my 3rd or 4th joycon replacement and if MS would have released a product that failed on delivery like the joycon can you imagine the outrage?! Or when an a game like no man's sky comes out 10% done lol, people actually tried to make that a non issue lol. I'm just pointing out hypocrisy in my humble opinion...but hey...its just a theory....a game...

@alucard1001: Sorry to disagree but I'm a big fan of Halo, just had a nice day long session of MCC on a 160" screen a few days ago, I've posted maps, and I've been active on the the forums for over a decade, and that demo was a disappointment. It's not an outright failure and most things that I take issue with can be corrected but I have little faith that they will be. I'd go on about the many things that I didn't like but I feel like I've done that on GS quite a bit already.

I don't need to imagine, I had 5 360's RROD on me. The failure rate on that console was a total shitshow for MS, and plenty of people were outraged. Sketchy Joycons are a drag, but consoles that brick and munch on your game discs is much worse.

@aross2004: 5 consoles RROD? Did you have them sitting on shag carpet on it's side? I know RROD is pretty infamous, but that's a lot. I bought the Xbox 360 Elite and didn't have any issues with it for years. Still runs well, but had to open it up a few times to clean dust off the heat sink.

@thelostscribe: My first launch console bricked in the first week. Got a second, and that one bricked about 2 weeks later. My 3rd lasted about 3 months, but just started making Chewbacca noises one day and gouged my Mass Effect disc to death, (I think that was the game).

My 4th system lasted like 6 months, and I had a 5th die after 4 months. My 6th lasted the rest of the console gen, so it was just that first year that was really bad.

@aross2004: Well there's no denying that. I have seen where the Xbox 360 leaves that perfect ring scratch on the disc before, happened to my cousins Enchanted Arms game. Still played fine after that somehow. Now my cousin did go through a few 360's, but that's because he legit had them sitting on the carpet lol.

The only good thing about that is MS seemed to handle it well with the warranty issues. Mine E67'd, but that's because my friend and roommate(so twice), on the same night, tripped over the Ethernet chord and ripped it to the ground from a 3 foot stand. We were playing Halo 3 online MP and it didn't even hiccup. Bragging rights. Second time though, it froze up and then about 3 months later, it started showing that error upon boot up. Wasn't free come to think of it, due to user related cause, but it was only a hundred bucks to fix it and they sent a box with packaging.

@alucard1001: Again, a controller with drift issues =/= a completely bricked console, and destroyed game discs.

I feel like the level of frustration with each situation was commensurate. My 5th 360 bricks and gouges my game discs = ready to hulk smash shit. My Joycon starts drifting and I have to use my pro controller instead = annoyed AF, but not ready to dropkick the Switch out of a 10 story window. That doesn't mean that Ninty gets a free pass on the Joycon issue, (and I returned the entire system to replace a Joycon that was sketchy), but your comparison doesn't hold up.

Pretty sure I wasn't making your point for you. The amount of outrage leveled against MS was 100% justified, not just a haters gonna hate type of deal.

Looks like they went for 60fps over graphics, as it should be. Quality graphics at 30fps is great, so long as you stay perfectly still. Actually playing the game will suck though.

@Thuban_23: It wouldn't be as big of a hit to FPS as you think since most of the issues are art style related, not graphic or geometric fidelity. 343 just didn't seem to understand that when people said they wanted classic art style they didn't mean realistic 3d cel shading.

Overall performance will improve with time, and most likely already has.

@Bread_or_Decide: Had to want to play Halo: Smells like the Ring, to begin with.

I'm not anti open world but I do get concerned when they try to rope a linear game into an open world environment. Linear allows for a cleaner tighter story driven experience and to take a long running series like Halo and drop the mainline game into an open world environment it puts itself at a notably higher risk of failure. Had this been a side title like Halo Wars, Halo Spartan Assault, Halo Reach, then sure get creative.

The slightly cartoony graphics style really takes the wind out of the slow but steady increases in graphic fidelity that Halo has built over the years.

This seems like a bit of a botch job right now. Either the demo was old and wasn't indicative of the final version, or it was pretty much what we'll get at release.

If it was just an older build, then someone should get kicked in the nuts for not cleaning it up for the showcase. If it's what we'll see for release, then I'll have to assume that they'll patch it up moving forward.

I'm wondering if a delay might not be the best option. Of course people would get shitty about it, but how is that any different than how shitty people are being right now?

I would rather they focus on releasing the best product they can, even if it means a delay. Imagine how awesome it would be if they delayed it, and then release the knock your socks off game that we're all hoping for. That would be epic, and would make the haters STFU with quickness.

I'm really concerned that we're basically 4 months away from release, but they still can't show us the game running on an actual XseX. It really wouldn't be a good look for MS to release the biggest launch title if it's not fully baked, (yes, it's cross-gen, but that's even more of an opportunity to show what can be done with the shiny new tech as a direct comparison to previous gen consoles).

All that being said, I'm still stoked as f*ck for a new Halo game.

@aross2004: I agree that the final game must look better. 343 has put out terrific looking Halos in the past. This must have been some kind of mistake.

That said, MS has tried to pull crap like this before, promising things will be better and that there is a "secret sauce" coming and then proving they got nothing but hot air.
