Halo 6 Is Undergoing "Serious, Real Planning," Microsoft Says

Plus, Microsoft teases, "We kind of know what's going to happen to the Master Chief ultimately."

Microsoft is doing "serious, real planning" for the sequel to Halo 5: Guardians, and, on a longer timeline, knows how Master Chief's story will end. This is according to Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor, who talked about Halo 6--or whatever the sequel to Halo 5 will be called--in a new interview.

"We do kind of know what's going to happen in the next game pretty well at this point," O'Connor told GamesRadar. "We're doing serious, real planning and even some writing on the next game already, and that's a luxury--we've never been in that position before."

Microsoft revealed during PAX Prime in 2011 that Halo 4 was the beginning of The Reclaimer Trilogy, which would span Halo 5 and Halo 6. But this story has since been expanded to become a "saga."

"While we originally said trilogy, we've actually expanded this to more of a saga, so we don't want to limit the Reclaimer story within a trilogy," Microsoft confirmed back in 2013.

O'Connor went on to say that, looking beyond Halo 6, Microsoft knows, at a high level at least, what's going to happen in the Halo universe a decade from now. Recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said Halo has staying power similar to other juggernaut franchises such as Star Wars and Spider-Man. Spencer said he thinks Halo will still be popular 20 years from now in 2035, something that 343 studio head Bonnie Ross agreed with as part of the GamesRadar interview.

She said that the work done on the Halo franchise by Bungie with Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach laid "the fictional foundation for the next 20 years" of Halo.

"You can look at the ending of Halo 4--and where Master Chief is, and obviously we had to know where we were going to take Halo 5 and Halo 6 with that," she said. "You have an epic sci-fi universe and we have multiple ways that we can go with this story, but all the pieces are laying there. The canvas is there for us to paint."

O'Connor wasn't ready to commit to any specifics about Halo 6 or other future games, saying, "If you start making those stepping stones too rigid, then you're not being realistic about the game development process."

But O'Connor, who has worked on the Halo franchise for more than a decade, first at Bungie and now with Microsoft, said the story planning team already has a good idea where Master Chief's story will end.

"We know what’s going to happen in the next game, and we kind of know what's going to happen to the Master Chief ultimately," he explained.

That Microsoft would be planning more Halo games should come as no surprise. After all, with more than 65 million copies sold, Halo is Microsoft's crown jewel. "It's our biggest exclusive franchise," Spencer recently said. "There's no doubt about that."

The Halo 5 release date is set for October 27 on Xbox One. For more on the shooter, check out some recent stories through the links below.

holly shit they dont even know what they are writing. 4 was just terrible gameplay and story. 5 had good gameplay but the story was so bad. i have so many problems with the direction they went in. i hate the forerunners i hate where they went with the chief. seriously wtf was 5 like how can anyone seriously believe the chief went rouge.

I feel that Bungie did the best job with the Halo series. Especially Halo Reach, I feel that and 2 were the best titles. I don't really like how 343 streamlined the series and made it more catered towards casual gamers. The newer ones really remind me of going into a Call of Duty direction, it's such a shame that they've really took the series away from that raw halo experience. So many bells and whistles now...

I might be about a year late on this comment...

Hopefully without 343?

Day one digital purchase here. 2 copies for the price of one. :)

Like the Halo haters here from Sony fanboys. Halo is a successful franchise that has done very well. I enjoyed Halo 4. It was basically a reintroduction to Master Chief and was a bridging event for the new story. 343 is doing a great job with Halo.

Wow already talking about Halo 6 and Halo 5 isn't even out? IF a game series is so stale and done that even the original creators give up on it, then maybe you should ya know....stop trying to settle for mediocrity and go back to making some actual memorable experiences, Microsoft. Jesus didn't Phil recently say he wanted to get away from doing the same thing over and over? Here I thought the wheels of change were starting to spin.....Oh well

Halo 5, Halo 6, Halo 7, Halo 8, hmcchhrrrr ... Hello Microsoft?! Just sold my XOne, way too much driving and mainstream stuff... go ahead: Halo 9, Halo 10, DESTINY! Ahahahaha... ;P

just dont break 5 lol you guys already suck for MCC just like the hardcore xbox player base...ironic?

Is it fun laughing at your own "jokes"?

Avatar image for JustinGoSka

It makes sense that they have to know where the next game is going. There's always several novels in between the games, and the writers have to know what they're building up to in order to know which direction to take the novels in.

Avatar image for davem1992

Should concentrate on releasing this inevitably broken mess before planning the next inevitably broken mess 343.

Avatar image for aeluron1989

@davem1992: Most companies always prepare for the future and we don't know if it'll be messy. MCC was a massive undertaking compared to just Halo5.

OT: WTB Halo 6 on PC.

Avatar image for ditronus

For some reason, it somewhat bothers me hearing a developer talking about the game they are making after this one when this one isn't even out yet.

If MCC is any foresight into 343 quality as of late, I would hope they spend a good amount of time after release on 5 before rushing to 6.

Day one for me. I own all the Halo games. Even the Indie ones.

Avatar image for saltkillzsnails

@blackace: indie ones? What...

Avatar image for aGiantSquirrel

If they don't add back split screen multiplayer, then this series is dead to me...

Avatar image for justicar_1

@aGiantSquirrel: Sad to see you go, as for me that has never been a deal breaker.

Avatar image for aGiantSquirrel

@justicar_1: Maybe I'm just bitter about all of these companies cutting out split screen. I'm equally upset with Robomundo cutting out split screen for THPS5. I enjoy online play, but it's nice having games people can play when they come over. Can't support the new trend.

Avatar image for aeluron1989

@aGiantSquirrel: I can understand wanting splitscreen but a dealbreaker? Seems too strong if you ask me.

Avatar image for rosinmonkekyx17

They should focus on not screwing up this Halo...If it's all good, then they can think about 6

I can't help but to feel like the most adamant haters of Halo are those that aren't really old enough to have experienced the franchise from the start, 11 years ago. It has always been a franchise with many strengths, even from the very first game. Great single player, amazing multiplayer, excellent sound design, music, atmosphere and gameplay, it's a franchise that I always wanted to last forever (well as long as I am gaming, anyway) because there is just so much potential there.

I immensely respect the work that Bungie put into the franchise, but I honestly don't understand the hate for 343 Industries. As a longtime player and Halo enthusiast, I think the franchise couldn't be in better hands right now, especially taking into consideration Bungie's recent work, Destiny. Sure, there have been missteps, like Halo 4's multiplayer pre-patch, but those were remedied and Halo 5 is looking fantastic in every way. I'm 29 now, and I couldn't be more excited for the franchise. Call it "milking" if you want, but as long as the games are still quality who really cares?

Avatar image for ditronus

@A8ADD0N: Halo made online console competitive play the way it is today.

Avatar image for Duttyhandz

@A8ADD0N: Halo first came out in 2001, not 2004. So that's 14 years ago, not 11. And was originally supposed to be a Macintosh exclusive. How would that have turned out for Halo if so...!

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman

@A8ADD0N: Easier to jump on the hate train than to make a decision for themselves.

Avatar image for twisted_outlaw

So apparently MC lives in this one.

Avatar image for gipro1

@twisted_outlaw: They confirmed they had no plans to kill off the chief a while back. Get with the times man. Realistically, it wouldn't be a good move for the series or the company.

Avatar image for Vexov

MC will join America and get the patriot paint job. He will also be renamed to "Master Freedom"

Never had an Xbox system before. I always had Playstation because I could really only ever focus on/have the time for one console at a time.

Soooo, I never played Halo. I did not know Bungie's brilliance. Well, since I got into Destiny, I found out Bungie's brilliance in the gameplay department. Never have I been so into a game. So I have been going back and playing MCC on a friend's console, and I can't believe how great Halo 1, 2, and 3. Are I can definitely see where the line is drawn between Bungie and 343. It's just not the same. The first 3 Halo games have the unmistakable Bungie quality so evident in Destiny.

This isn't a Halo vs Destiny thing, people, so don't even go there. I love Destiny for the reasons I do, and I see the immense quality in the early Halo games.

In fact, I'm buying my own Xbox One this holiday, my first time ever supporting two consoles at once since the SNES/Genesis days, just so I can go fully deep into the Halo franchise I missed out on. I hope Halo 5 lives up to the Bungie quality of before, but I don't know. I'm willing to give it a fair shot, though.

Can't wait!

Avatar image for twisted_outlaw

@guitarpete462: Everything about your post makes me want to vomit. Bungie isn't the same Bungie that made Halo. Most of the people that worked on Halo moved over to 343 studios. Destiny sucks ass. Don't ever compare Destiny to Halo. You have no clue how big of an impact Halo had on console gaming PERIOD. Basically everything we have to day, was set by the bar Bungie and MS raised with Halo back in the day.

FPS that actually works well on console? Didn't happen until Halo CE.

Xbox Live? Yup. Halo 2.

Halo 3 started to see a down turn, then it got worse from there. Halo 4 was more back to the roots with a new twist, and Halo 5 seems to bring Halo along into 2015.

343's first game was Halo CE anniversary followed by Halo 4.

And Bungie sucks. Destiny is trash. So is Activision, and anyone stupid enough to buy into that cash grab. They stripped the finished version of Destiny down, just to sell it back to people in pieces.

Avatar image for aGiantSquirrel

@twisted_outlaw: "FPS that actually works well on a console? Didn't happen in until Halo CE."

You must have completely missed out on SegaNet. Sorry, Xbox doesn't get that credit. They only made online more popular.

Avatar image for rosinmonkekyx17

@twisted_outlaw: Halo 3 started to see a down turn? Were you under a rock at that time? Halo 3 was one of the more successful Halo that perfected Halo 2's multiplayer and added more to the story. Halo 4 had a good story but it's multiplayer was frowned upon by many Halo fans.

Avatar image for guitarpete462

@twisted_outlaw: Yeah, that's why I avoided Xbox for so many years. Thanks for reminding me.

Because the userbase is so full of elitist jerks like yourself who can't see past their own opinions.

Your lack of regard for others or basic respect is what makes me want to vomit. I come in with a positive post about Halo and all you can do is demonstrate your lack of self control.

Avatar image for rosinmonkekyx17

@guitarpete462: Haters gotta hate, fanboys gotta be elitists

Avatar image for Oozyrat

I'm surprised it's not already in development by a few months.

Avatar image for ShadowOfKratos

I'm surprised it doesn't have a gameplay trailer already. I mean, AC Syndicate already has a gameplay trailer for the DLC, and the game isn't even out yet. (Boy is the gaming industry sh**ing on consumers nowadays.)

Avatar image for shieldrune5847

@ShadowOfKratos: With triple aaa games costing so much to make, and everyone complaining and sooking about every little thing developers say or show, and constantly demanding more and more and more, driving up costs, do you wonder why they try to make as much money as possible through DLC? And the fact that it is priced so high because not many will buy it, but loyalists to the game will?

Oh man, I can't stop laughing. That post was hilarious and I love Halo. I've played them all. I liked them all...

At least I did until Halo 4; that game I didn't even finish. I hated it. My favorites? Combat Evolved and Reach. I think I'm still going to give Halo 5 a shot though.
